A college coach said today that every lottery pick in the NBA draft has a ``Rodney Guillory'' in their life. It's considered a part of the business.

What is wrong Scott? Did sc send some goons to the house to rough you up a bit so you'd start this spin campaign?
Ok, so I'll play along with you, who are Kevin Love's and Russell Westbrook's "Rodney Guillorys"???
Since they are both lottery picks, they must have one right?

That Tub of Love was too much of a weenie to play football; he’s got no hops and will be an NBA bust. He’ll get drafted because he’s an over-coached rich @hole. No, he didn’t need no Rodney.
I hear Love skipped all NBA camps because he was afraid to be mistaken for Terry Forster, the original Fat Tub of Goo. At least Terry Forster, however, had a vertical leap of more than 4 inches.

Anybody who knows college basketball knows that Love and Westbrook used direct deposit for their Sam Gilbert Trust Fund accounts. And by the looks of it, Love spent a good deal of his on late-night Taco Bell runs. You know what kind of appetite that all-night UCLA partying can cause a person ... just ask Marques Johnson and Bill Walton, two players who were really smokin' aces, if you know what I mean.

OK Scott, honestly. Is this the Mt. St. Mary's head coach, or did you cruise the SMC athletic department for this? Maybe it's the Trojan women's Gymnastic's coach. I mean you could at least clarify what freaking sport they coach and still keep their anonymity, I hope it's basketball. I know this is just a blog, it's not print, but first you come out with "a source said UCLA blah blah blah" and then it's "a college coach" says this completely broad blanket statement which obviously doesn't hold any weight. As Nacho, a fellow BRO i can see, points out WESTBROOK, who is projected as a late lottery pick, wasn't hyped enough out of high school to even have a handler. Maybe this coach meant that when you declare for the draft as a lottery prospect you have a Guillroy? Yeah that would make more sense, they're called agents and they help you make a lot more than 30k a year. I mean I know this situation sucks for all the Trojan family and all, but what purpose do these posts serve? Undoubtedly SC is not the only school in the nation involved in shady dealings with recruits (I'm looking at you Callipari, and the entire SEC for that matter) but saying EVERY LOTTERY PICK has a Guillroy is absurd. Some NBA prospect actually work their way into the draft and aren't taking advances on their draft salary.

First, Love very well may not be a lottery pick i.e. one of the first ten choices, so he may be out of this loop. And I believe his father is his mentor, not some outsider.
Second, if this commentary is true, then an explanation that comes to mind is that so many of these young men have no strong male presence in their lives while they are growing up, and then when it appears that they may be able to make some money playing basketball one day, they become easy prey to their smooth-talking elders.

Hey Lawyer John:
I agree with your comments, except that a lottery pick is one picked in the first 14 slots. Each of those non-playoff teams were in the lottery for the number one pick.
Love has an NBA father, and I seriously doubt that there is some runner acting as his mouthpiece while being recruited out of high school. Conversely, Mayo did not have a dominant male figure, and like you said, latched onto to some smooth talking elder (Guillory), who is now a liability. I seriously doubt Scott's post that every lottery pick has someone like Guillory as they were coming out of high school.
Lastly, I think Love will succeed in the NBA, but may not be an all-star. I can envision him eventually with 13-15 pts, 8-10 reb, and 4-5 assists per game if he earns the opportunity to start. He has solid fundamentals and technique, even if he can't jump out of the gym. Bill Laimbeer comes to mind.
I think Love have the potential to be a Luke Walton level player, which is a pretty good thing. He could be a solid contributor with a good 10+ years in the league on teams who run a 6 to 7 man rotation.
He might actually benefit by dropping to the middle of the first round so nobody will lay the "bust" tag on him for not reaching the level of Luke's dad.

Yeah, their called agents and like you said, they are part of the business. Unfortunately, in OJ's case the business side may have started early. We shall see...
Lawyer - lots of talk from a guy that doesn't even know whick picks are "lottery picks."

Hey Zippy, good criticism. But as in the NFL, after the first 10-picks the money starts to fall real hard. After the first 10 kids, it really becomes a "lottery."

I hear Love is down with Sam Gilbert's family.
