Q: Throughout the fall, there were numerous reports, including from you, about how Mitch Mustain was so dominant against the first team defense and he constantly got accolades for his performances against that unit. So how come it became a different story in the spring when he went against the same first team defense? Why did he struggle in the spring (or at least that was the impression that was given; perhaps incorrectly) that was not the case in the fall?

A: This is a complex answer by football standards, which means it requires more than a sentence.

This was written about because the scout-team quarterback usually gets worked over and also because of Mustain's high profile.
During spring practice, Mustain didn't exactly struggle and actually did better than in the fall, but the standards were much higher. For instance, there was so much scrutiny it became an issue whether he hesitated more than Mark Sanchez before passing the ball, because it was tough to sometimes find differences between the two.
The coaches used the ``hesitation'' issue as one of the factors that landed Sanchez the job.

enough is enough scott time to face the facts. sanchez is the better qb of the 2, like it or not. you seem to have an issue along with almost all the other posters on this blog with sanchez for some reason. time for you guys to accept the fact that sanchez is the starter and by the time the season starts corp will be the backup and mustain will be 3rd string. so stop with the conspiracy b.s. and learn a little something about football.

Hey Lefty, did the idiot asylum let you out your cell for a couple of minutes and you went straight for asylum's computer? Commenst like that are why so many people dislike Sanchez and do nothing but hurt him. You are much of the reason why Sanchez is considered such a polarizing figure.

What an utterly ignorant and mentally challenged post by lefty. No one -- including Pete Carroll and Steve Sarkisian -- ever said that Sanchez was better than Mustain. Why? Because he was not better. He got the starting position for the rest of the spring due to his knowledge of the playbook and PC said that "he would be the starter if we had a game THIS SATURDAY." Well, we did not have a game that Saturday, did we? So the competition resumes again in the fall.

Learn to read, learn some basic English, and perhaps learn something about football.

wow my bad i didn't know the two of you knew so much about football. after both of those great and informative replies now i see why mustain should be the starter. and to think i was so miss informed. not only that but i didn't have any idea that i didn't know how to read or use basic english. thanks for clearing that up for me geniuses.

Yeah, if lefty says he knows football then he must be right. Moron! So Corp will be No. 2 and Mustain will be 3rd string? What an idiot. Even if Sanchez starts the Virginia game (and I do not know if he will), there is no guarantee that he will still be the starter at the end of the year. This is the first time since Pete became the coach that there is talk the starting QB at the beginning of the year may not be the starting QB by the end of the year. Sanchez only got the nod for now due to knowing the playbook better than Mustain and not anything he displayed in terms of talent. I was at every practice and saw what was going on with my own eyes. Corp will not be a factor. Sanchez has shown nothing in three years and the same problems he had when he arrived on campus are all still there. He has never progressed and may have even regressed since high school. Don't even get me started on his off the field activities.

Dear So Miss Informed,
No comment on the Sanchez/Mustain debate, I don't really care. But you actually might have an issue with the English language.

I saw one practice, and on that day Aaron Corp was clearly a factor. Corp was the best player on the field that day and may certainly have something to say about who the QB is in the fall. Sanchez was efficient that day, and Mustain looked a bit nervous.

No matter who our QB is, we are in good hands. The O Line is my biggest concern early in the season.

Whew, better be careful what you state on this blog, because the SC -police are watching every word you utter.

That said, I think this quarterback race is the most interesting in the Carroll regime. Sanchez would seem to be the choice because of his history in the system. But that game-ending interception at Oregon keeps haunting me-- are there more in the future?

Mustain and Corps are unproven, in my book, despite Mustain having played at Arkansas (because it was as a second-tier player to a great running back).

My evaluation: I think Sanchez has the tools, and if he can be calm and not take chances i.e. interceptions, then I think he can be the "man" the next 2-years. And remember, he is a member of a great team so he does not have to win games on his own.
