Ten Hut
Here's a spotlight question on an important subject, the band.
Q: Is it just me or do you seem to have some dislike towards the USC TMB?
A: I do not have a dislike of the band. I consider them a vital part of USC's tradition and the amount of copy I've written regarding their exclusion from UCLA is more than other writer. I also was the first to write about the band's move to the end zone.
But I do have some issues. There is a pomposity at the top that I think limits the band's appeal. There's just a lot of ego that results in back patting and detracts from the actual band members, who I have no problems with. For example, doing the same halftime show against Stanford for at least 26 years wears thin and is a disservice to the fans and students in the band. I've frequently mentioned the reliance on 1970's songs. I also remember when the band played after a football game for more than what seems like 20 minutes. I could go on, but I think I will stop now.

You can change the 70's songs all you like - with the exception of TUSK!
I will take the playing of '70s songs by a live band over the piped in music played at all professional venues any day of the week.
I like the idea of the band playing after the games; it takes on a concert feel, and the event becomes more than simply a football game.
I don't like the band members acting so cool, however, and those dark glasses are sooo Hollywood.
I don't know about other fans, but I think the halftime show against Stanford is a hoot!!! How can the band get rid of "Heartbreaker"?! The trumpet section solo is awesome!!!
The band is in a serious need of an update - both their repertoire of songs and their half time routines. That isn't going to happen until Mr Art Bartner retires.
Forgot about Heartbreaker, That's a keeper too.
Scott - When Art took over the TMB in 1970 he transformed it. At his direction the band became innovative, daring and current. Some of your readers might remember the band in the 60’s, so without a doubt Art has done a great service for SC and the Trojan Family. But I agree with you; back slapping only goes so far and in this case it has gone too far. The bands repertoire is staid and woefully out of date. And while Art believes he makes changes to keep the band current, sometimes you need help to see beyond your own ego. Fight On!
I know what they need
DRUMLINE BATTLES!!
