Answer Friday, Take 4
If you have playcalling advice, please leave it here for one of our readers.
Q: Pete Carroll and his coaching staff have made numerous errors over they years that have resulted in losses for USC. For example in the Texas game there were numerous mistakes, not challenging some plays, coach Franklin and the time out wasted, going for on 4th down in the 1st quarter and not making it insteadf of the field goal( USC lost the Texas game by 3), 4th and 2. This is a possible weakness don't forgot other mistakes like playing an injuried John David Booty, and playing for overtime and not the win in the Cal game with the scored tied( Norm Chow recalled that Carroll wanted overtime). Why has no one questioned Pete Carroll mostly and his coaches on their playcalling?
A: I can safely say that the readers here and myself have consistently challenged the playcalling, especially after the Texas game. If you check back the archives of this blog, you'll see plenty of questions, including the ultra conservative playcalling when Mark Sanchez replaced Booty for the Arizona game.

Yeah! Carroll sucks!!
With Wolf's vast and in-depth knowledge of football playcalling, it is amazing that he hasn't been hired yet as an offensive coordinator. It's obvious he would do a much better job of running the offense than Sarkisian, Kiffin, Carroll, and even Chow. Yes, he often times misspells simple words, writes incoherent sentences, and shows up hours late to do his job, but I'm sure his attention to detail and overall intelligence would greatly improve if he were to be hired!
Ummm, one of the great things about sports, every couch potato would have called the plays to win the game as a Monday morning QB. The play calling has been criticized extensively. Remember firesark.com? But, has there ever been a coach in the history of football who didn't have his play calling questioned? It's a part of the game. Pete is God in my book. My only criticism was the arrogance to continue to go for it on 4th down early in the season when the offense was struggling rather than taking the FG. It hurt us in our 2 losses against Stanford and Oregon. To the staffs' credit, they adjusted and we started kicking FGs on 4th down much more frequently in the last 1/3 of the season. Certainly, Pete must have read the witty banter and keen insight from this board in evaluating strategic adustments to the game plan.
I don't think there is any doubt PC has made coaching errors. Another one that you didn't mention was in the Oregon st. game we lost in 2006. USC was down at halftime and came out like gangbusters and moved right down the field to the OSU 6 yd line in the 3rd Q. But instead of kicking a FG on 4th down, they threw a pass to DJ that was incomplete. If they would of kicked the FG we would of won, (and probably won the NC too) PC said "I got greedy".
But he also did a heck of a coaching job just getting us that far in 2006 with a depleted team that basically had 1 available RB. (CJ Gable)
So give the guy a break...
When the play called works, you're good. When it doesn't, You're and idiot. What is the difference? Nothing.
The thing you noticed about Norm Chow was how he set up the defense with plays leading to other plays. Gets the defense going one way and then changes it up.
But all Coaches try that, but it his is way of forseeing the way the defense is going to change up and react and teaching that to Teenage QB's that makes him better than most. IMO
But that may have been an unfair start for SC having Chow as the OC, as we were majorly spoiled.
Scott...
no offense, but what can we do here to steer ourselves away from the song girl questions?
I know you find it kind of humourous, but this site is turning into like a good place to discuss the ins and outs of cheerleading...being a 40 year old man I am not too interested I much prefer to discuss USC football.
RIckyI:
Have you heard of:
1. But instead of kicking they [would have] won...
2. If they [would have] kicked...
What's the deal with your "barbaric" would of?
Bluntly stated it is called pathetic butchered English. Where did you learn that garbage? You wasted time and money; your mind perhaps...
SAD...
Anyone who questions play calling after the fact is a genious. If you had to call every play, every down, I guarantee you we'd be 0-12. So lighten up years down the road. It's ok the day/week after the game because we don't know the thinking. But occasionally they screw up. But that is also in retrospect! Move on...
isn't usc 70-8 under the pete carroll era.
the best in the 2000s. yet you guys keep complaining! stfu!
