Exception To The Rule

Here's a quote from Pete Carroll that was posted earlier today on the running backs: ''It's never been a problem for us. It's a problem for everyone else that they can't figure out why we do it that way. You saw for years that Reggie (Bush) was the poster boy and Heisman Trophy winner. LenDale White set the record for Pac-10 touchdowns.''
Uh, well, there was that famous fourth-down play against Texas when Reggie Bush was not on the field at all and LenDale White got stuffed short of the first down.
That goes down as a ''problem'' for USC in our book and one time we couldn't ''figure out why (they) do it that way.''

Man, if only Scott were coaching the team instead of that Pete Carroll guy, I mean, what's he done for us lately? We certainly were winning the PAC 10 and finishing in the top 4 every year before this NFL retread showed up. So unless he produces a NC this year, I say we replace him with Scott Wolf who has demonstrated his superior football intellect on a daily basis.

Let me see if I have this straight now. Pete is discussing how having 6 to 10 backs on his roster is not a problem for him and his staff. And then Mr. Wolf says that not using Bush at the same time as White on a pivotal play years ago shows that there is a problem. How is this relevant to the subject at hand, Mr. Wolf? Only he knows, and he is not telling.

I'm impressed by Scott's ability to take a quote that Jill Painter already blogged, and adds a snide little comment, which as LJ pointed out is a complete non-sequitur.

Scott, can you do the noble thing and hand the reigns over to Jill Painter? Or even to El Capitan, since he's amusing.

I'm as on-board with the campaign to bring on Jill Painter full time as I am with the campaign to bring back Patricia Pillsbury. Viva la Jill!

Just wondering... who is "OUR BOOK" and who is "WE COULDN'T FIGURE IT OUT" ???

A play was called and it was run. Such a swarmy typical Wolf comment.

Loves to try to rub Pete's nose it everyday if he could. Wait, check that... old Scotty wants to rub it in the noses of those internet geeks...you know those that don't have a blog like Scott. Get back to what you do best, uploading cheerleader pictures..

Excellent analysis of the infamous 4th and 2 play on TFA link above. Both Chow and Kalil have said that the right play was called, although Chow added that he would have had Bush on the field as a decoy. After reading the TFA analysis, I think we made the right, high probability call and just didn't execute. Imagine the maelstrom of MMQB'ing if we had used Bush or a Leinart bootleg and failed. Coaches went with the high probability call that had been working all game. There were 20 other plays than that one that cost us the game, as well as Lofa leaving early for the draft.

Scott is right. Coaches blew that call. But problem was not backs. Lendale was tired. Had first fumble of his career play before.

Ball belonged in Matt's hands. This was the play he had come back to make. If Chow had been OC Bush goes right, fake to Lendale and Matt rolls left on pass/run option. Matt was having great game. He would have won this one.

I still agree that Bush belonged on field, not on sideline, as a decoy and whether Matt had the ball or whatever it would have possibly provided enough distraction to get a first down. Besides, the bad Bush lateral which cost a touchdown and the Texas TD resulting from the blown call when Young's knee was down both should have provided us with a victory. Too many 20/20 hindsights that should have been foresights. WE had played a great game until the last minute.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
