Quarterbacks, Song Girls, Etc.

The questions (and answers) continue.

Q: Has USC had quarterbacks who started for the team from their first day as an incoming freshman until they graduated as a senior?

A: No. Carson Palmer started during his freshman year but did not start the season-opener against Purdue and was brought in as a backup the following game.

Q: Do you think Tricia Pillsbury set the bar so high for the beauty we expect from the USC Song Girls, that inevitably any Song Girl who came after her would be considered ugly, no matter how attractive she would be on her own non-Tricia Pillsbury merits?

A: No. She did set the bar high, but there was relative quiet on this issue until recently.

Q: I read where Song Girlgate has been covered by Sports Illustrated and ESPN, among many other media, making it a national story. Is the goal now to have it become an international story? Since the French consider women to be works of art, once Song Girlgate hits Paris, how ruthless do you think the people of France will be by what they observe to be women who should not be paraded in public?

A: I'm waiting for L'Equippe or at least the International-Herald Tribune to call any day now.

Q: When you were a student at SC in the 1980s and you first met a then-young Tim Tesselone, who was also barely out of college himself, do you think the Tesselone of the 1980s would have been qualified to have served on the selection committee of the Song Girls? Is it possible that he would have cut Tricia Pillsbury and gone down in history with the GM who picked Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan in the 1984 NBA Draft?

A: It is entirely possible. But in those days, Tim would probably decline to be on the selection committee because it would be considered not befitting of a sports information director.

Q: Since UCLA is copying everything our #1 football team does, why doesn't SC copy UCLA and Oregon's Song Girl programs to restore our decrepit Song Girl program?

A: Maybe we can send someone to Oregon for two weeks of song girl boot camp.

For yet one more time, I already mentioned last week and earlier today that Lindsey is one of only two attractive Song Girls on the current squad. For those of you who do not pay attention, here is what I wrote LAST WEEK:

The following are the only pretty Song Girls in the 2000s who also had "The Look" that Dolly Zachary Rouse claimed was imperative to being a Song Girl:

1) Whitney (coach's daughter): 2000-2002
2) Shannon: 2002
3) Jacquelyn: 2004
4) Jenn: 2004-2005
5) Kim: 2004-2006
6) Natalie (coach's daughter): 2005-2006*
7) Erica: 2006
8) Lindsey: 2008-present
9) Keli: 2008-present

*This one is kind of a coin toss since sometimes she is pretty, but from certain angles, not so much. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt here and include her, especially since she made all of us laugh with her support for Texas.

Some notes:

1) This is the definitive list of ALL the pretty Song Girls from the 2000s that also had "The Look" which is considered imperative to be a Song Girl.
2) If you are not on this list or you know someone you think should be on it, you are wrong. This is the definitive list and is not open to discussion nor interpretation.
3) The list is not all blondes, as there are a couple of brunettes who clearly have "The Look."
4) Yes, the 2008 squad has a couple of members on the list, but before people start getting excited, there are actually 14 members on the 2008 squad. 2 out of 14 is not exactly glory days material, is it?
5) So we have a total of nine pretty Song Girls with "The Look" out of about 80 or so in the 2000s? That's pretty sad.

Fight on!

As a former, long-time college sports information director, I wish I would have been asked to be a part of the selection committee for the cheerleaders at my alma mater and other university I worked at (or even the days I was a conference SID). If asked, I would have been pleased to serve.

When will this nonsense about attractive song girls end!!! WHY DOES ANYONE REALLY GIVE A DAMN!!!

I care about two things where USC is concerned...that the football team does well year in and year out (that's already taken care of as long as Pete's around) and that my degree from USC is worth more now than when I was there 13 years ago (Sample's taken care of this part and USC is now one of the top private institutions on the West Coast).

What the hell do I care whether or not 12 girls who get a grand total of 5 minutes of screen time at every televised game are smoking hot or not?!

It's true that the song girls defined USC in the 70's when all the school had going for it was that it was located in sunny So Cal and had great weather - let's admit it now USC's admission standards back then were laughable at best. Those days are long since gone - but apparently a lot of the old horny geezers on this board still think USC is defining itself by the same standards.

The girls USC admitted back then (and likely Ms. Pillsbury included) probably wouldn't qualify for admission to the university now. It's not like the hi-def cameras at games still don't find sufficiently hot women in the stands to linger on...who cares this much about the 12 non-cheerleaders on the field?

If looking at slightly less attractive girls for a 5 scattered minutes during a 4 hour football game means that my degree is worth more than a degree from Oregon I got no problem with that. USC is now a bonafide institution of higher learning not a model factory - can't say the same for Oregon.

Oregon has hotter cheerleaders - YAY for them. What the hell does that do for me or for the Oregon alumni who attend college there now?
Can you paste a picture of a cheerleader in your resume? No.
In a job interview can an Oregon alumni say "my degree ain't worth squat but you should hire me cause we clearly have the hottest cheerleaders in the Pac-10 - none of which ever gave me the time of day"? No.
Do the hot cheerleaders give Oregon fans consolation when they go to their 4th consecutive lower-tier bowl game? No.
Do the hot cheerleaders help Oregon out recruit USC for athletes? No.
Do they help Oregon consistently beat USC on the field? No.

THE ANSWER TO ALL OF THOSE QUESTIONS WAS - NO.

THEN WHY THE HELL SHOULD I CARE!!!

This whole song girl thing has gotten supremely ridiculous. The reason USC doesn't place more emphasis on the girls is that they aren't defined by them anymore. Sample has better and more important shit to worry about.

Scott is a joke.

You are so full of garbage, it's truly unbelievable. I know Song Girls from the 1990s who went on to earn an MD, PhD, EdD and various master's and advanced degrees. I know at least two Song Girls from the 1990s who became university professors while still in their 20s.

So, no, the argument that academics are responsible for the decline in Song Girls is bogus. Have any of the Song Girls in the 2000s gone on to further their academic credentials? Not quite. Most of them got degrees in communications and ended up answering telephones or working menial jobs in PR.

I can't speak for many of the Song Girls in the 1980s because that was before my time, but from what I have read, their academic credentials were also superior to those of the Song Girls in the 2000s. AND they were also far more attractive that the Song Girls from this decade.

So get your facts right before making an ass of yourself, for yet one more time. Your routine has gotten old and you constantly embarrass yourself.

If you don't like what Scott writes, then stop coming back to his blog numerous times every single day.

You are a joke.

BTW anyone replying to argue this with me is facing a losing battle.

I can't stand that Scott is posting pics of UCLA cheerleaders on this USC site. He's now consistently being scooped by Malcomson and is entirely useless as a USC beat reporter. Can't remember the last time I read something here that was actually insider info...and I hadn't seen somewhere else first.

This site is now equivalent to the TMZ of sports blogs. More popular than ever - entirely useless information wise.

There's nothing inside USC about this site (except for the page title.)

Tyler, you are a fool of the highest order. The football team's success has no relevance on the university's academic prestige. Are LSU and Florida State respected for their academics based on their football success? No, they are considered to be jokes.

You make very flawed arguments, trying to make a correlation between one set of circumstances to another unrelated set of circumstances.

Also, if you think Scott is so bad, is it not so funny that you keep coming back to read what he has written, even though you claim he does not write anything you want to read? Hypocrisy at its best.

As far as Malcolmson is concerned, if you're into rah-rah nonsense, based on what he is told to write, then yes, he's informative. But some of us are a bit more interested in reading what actually happens with the program rather than mere PR fluff.

Dude, I totally care. I want hot Song Girls.

Scott's blog is a reflection of reader interest. Clearly, based on the forum questions, Song Girlgate has become a point of anger for many. And if it's not obvious enough, many of the questions are tongue in cheek questions, merely trying to highlight the joke and the farce that is the Song Girl squad.

And for those of you who have a football inquiry during this offseason, noone's preventing you from asking your questions.

Tyler, your premise is all wrong. The SG's do matter. While Sample has done an outstanding job and SC has grown in academic prestige, the primary value component of your degree remains the network. Successful sports programs add value to the network by adding nodes and improving recruiting. Pretty girls also add value to the network by adding nodes and improving recruiting. Pretty girls + good sports + good academics all combine to create a valuable network, which gives your degree value. Per the administration, the SGs are "the face of the university". If you don't care, then you are not a real Trojan at heart. Lambda Lambda Lambda is always looking for a few good men.
