Academic Matters
With Nick Perry down to his last chance to academically qualify, it's interesting to note hardly anyone ever mentions Venice tailback Curtis McNeal.
``I wouldn't bet on it happening with him,'' a member of the football program said Saturday.

And the winner for most vague comment of the year goes to...
``I wouldn't bet on it happening with him,'' a member of the football program said Saturday.
Wouldn't bet on him qualifying or not qualifying?
Either way, I'm following whatever Neuheisel bets.
Seriously though, I think I've finally figured out Wolfie. He is so tired of covering a highly successful football program that he has to poke fun at the silliest things, and print rumor and innuendo about 18-year-old kids and their grades. Wolfie is the guy in the cartoon who gets sand kicked in his face at the beach.
As a follow-up to my friend Sam Gilbert (love your screen name and the joke about Neuheisel): I just can't wait to hear the lame excuses from Neuheisel and Chow after the gutless little bruins suffer a merciless pounding at the hands of Tennessee. That one promises to get ugly fast!
So now Scott you're column is reduced to publishing the academic failures of 18-year-old kids. Nice.
Got an idea for you: how about you publish for all of your readers to see a copy of your next performance evaluation?
After all, if we challenged you on publishing academic stories you'd say it's because we pay to watch these kids play and we donors pay for the school to recruit them. Well, we pay to read your column too.
See if you can own up to self criticism as easily as you criticize an 18-year-old kid.
Will McNeal go the JC route?
I think Scott is often a sucky reporter too (if filling a real niche. That said, giving news on possibly losing two recruits to academics is a valid story. It happens at all schools, they even over commit because they know who may be on the bubble or like Simmons may do something stupid. I will be sorry if we lose Nick Perry but I don't think we necessarily had a big need for McNeal even as a return man though he would have been nice. It clears the way for a top running back next year who sees that he will have at least a year or two to get ahead of other recruits in successive years.
