The coaches briefly considered wide receiver Brandon Carswell as a practice quarterback after Mark Sanchez got hurt.
``I could throw, but my accuracy, I don't know,'' Carswell said.

Am I the only one who feels as if I have been kicked in the stomach over Sanchez's injury and unavailability for probably 1/2 the season? My excitement for the season has been greatly diminished.
Reminds me of 1989 when we had a national championship contender but our quarterback was knocked out by injury right before the beginning of the season, and so we started an inexperienced but talented guy, Todd Marinovich. He lost the opener and lost to Notre Dame, and then lost in the Rose Bowl to Michigan, 3 losses. It could have been different had our No. 1 guy not gone down.
I feel the same thing will occur this year-- a certain Ohio State loss to start matters off, and then probably another loss or two. Cannot expect much more from first year or even second year quarterbacks. It is too tough a position to play without at least 2 years experience.

Is this an erroneous report, or have the SC coaches gone mad? Why, with two D-I recruited QBs Garret Green and Drew McAllister (above and beyond Corp and Mustain) on the roster, would the coaches feel the urge to grab a WR and put him into the QB slot. Does this make sense to anyone? That would be like the Redskins pressing Clinton Portis into QB duty over Antwaan Randle-El, or the Steelers of the 90's asking Kevin Greene to helm the ship instead of Kordell Stewart.

Sureshot, agreed. I think this is media sensationalization....creating a story. LJohn, semi-agree, hate to see Mark wait his turn, then go down. But, Mustain/Corp are the best back-ups in the land and would start almost everywhere else. Agree we may drop OSU, but Mark will return and we have more than enough to finish 12-1 with a BCS ring. Fire up, LJ!

Thanks DFWTrojan for the pep talk. I do feel a bit better, but am not fully convinced. Still, how much do I owe you for the consultation?

Hey LJ:
USC won the 1990 Rose Bowl over Michigan (17-10) to end up with a 9-2-1 record from the 1989 season. You were correct about the opening game loss (to Ill.) and loss to N.D. USC also tied fUCLA 10-10. I recall that Marinovich led a great last-minute, length-of-the-field drive to beat the Cougs.
Pat O'Hara was the QB who injured his knee in camp. If I remember the Illinois game correctly, SC was leading 13 - 7 when Jeff George chucked a deep pass that looked certain to be picked off by Carrier or Colter, only to bounce into the air and into the receiver's hands five yards behind the D. Ugh!

You know, if it were not for uscmike I would probably get away with all of my imperfect memory recollections. But that is right, a truly "non-memorable" SC-UGLA game where UGLA's last play field goal attempt to win hit the cross bar and fell harmlessly to the ground (my sports-challenged associate still recalls that game that we attended, and knows that play like he knows his daughter's name). And after losing 2 years in a row in the Rose Bowl, SC did manage a victory (I was out of the country and missed the game, but I remember reading later that it was a very ambiguous ending).

Who was above Marinovich in the 1989 depth chart?
