What Is This?
USC is selling black football jerseys on its official online store. This is puzzling for many reasons. Football jerseys are something of a sacred matter for USC. Pete Carroll's previously rejected attempts to wear an alternate uniform. Last year's basketball black jerseys were a flop.
So is this a fashion statement? Perhaps, but an odd choice in lieu of the anti-gang violence rally Carroll held at the Coliseum on Saturday.

If they wear these I turn in my tickets immediately, pull my endowments and push Long Beach State to re-open their football program with the new jerseys. This is how people get fired, ask Steve Lavin. Speaking of fired, Floyd is next.
I'm sorry I might be a little out of the loop here but what does USC selling black jerseys (admittedly sacrilegious if they're worn in game) have to do with inner-city gang violence?
Is black now one of the noted gang colors? 'Cause if that's the case Angelenos are in a boatload of trouble.
Good point.
I never associated the color black with gangs. Now, blue or red might be a different story.
I do not understand your comment about the anti-gang violence rally that pete carroll attended? Could you or somebody elaborate?
WTF? It's fine for warm-up apparel, but not the jersey! This is just another one of Nike's schemes to make more $$$. Last time they tried, Pete had a great quote of "We have a little thing called tradition around here."
I'd say how retarded these jerseys are, but I'd be afraid of offending any retards out there by asociating them with this nonsense. Might as well be an Iowa jersey, or a Steelers jersey. This thing really has no place at an SC game, but rest assured, some douchebag will insist on wearing one, along with his sideways trucker hat.
Disgusting Nike scam to come out with something new to hopefully create a fad and boost sales. The only way this jersey looks good is on a Duckette or Bruin cheerleader.
Here's an article in the New York Times on Raiders gear being adopted by gangs:

And for the record. I think those jerseys are the worst things I've ever seen.
Might as well call the Oregon teams for design tips.
the black basketball jerseys looked better than these things
They had gold jerseys that never were worn by the team. This is much to do about nothing.
I heard from a USC source the black jerseys will be worn for the THU night game on ESPN since that is also a break from tradition.
I'd like to see them wear it for the Stanford payback game too.
Black jerseys are popular with gang members because they are NOT associated with a specific gang. Thus they can be worn at neutral events without starting instant retaliation. The black color is the same reasoning the villians in Westerns wear black hats.
Those Black and Gold jerseys will sell loads in San Pedro. By the way Keith15, there is a petition to bring back Long Beach State Football so those extras can be used for fundraising. They are in the market for a sponsor so you might be in luck.
Speaking of jerseys, what years did SC wear the single stripe on the shoulder (like the current jersey) versus the multiple arm stripes? I'm thinking 60's was the shoulder stripe and the 70's, 80's, and 90's they had the multi stripes on the arms. I prefer the current jerseys.
Also, when I was watching on TV an old USC/UCLA game from the 90's the Trojan decal on the helmet looked huge. I think Rob Johnson was the QB? What year did they first put the Trojan on the helmet and how many variations have there been?
Good questions TROJANAZ, I've wondered the same thing.
It might be something you could ask in the Open Forum.
Scott,
The bookstore has sold a gold SC jersey with cardinal numbers and shoulder stripes for, oh, five years now. Get to campus once in awhile and you'll be amazed at the things you discover. Otherwise you'll just be a columnist with enough knowledge to be dangerous.
For ONCE, I agree with you. Ouch!
Holy guacamole, T&T, is your source good? SC football in black jerseys for a game would be a seismic event in sports fashion....7x on the Richter. I think I would disapprove as it would be too much of a reach for attention. Leave that to the lesser schools like UO and Miami. But, I could see Nike paying us a pretty penny for advertising purposes to wear black for a game.
I saw these in the bookstore and they all benefit the Mario Danelo fund. I am assuming the black color is out of respect to the dead.
TROJANAZ,
While not everything you wanted to know - you're right on about the jerseys - this site gives you some good background about the helmets.

HORRIBLE! They should leave this to the Oregon's of the world.
someone told me that nike was pushing for the ohio state game to unveil these monsters.. ugh, that would look SO awful. stick with tradition boys!!
dhToros Thanks for the update! Go Dirtbags!!
Wearing those jerseys in an SC football game would be a crime against humanity.
If you think this is bad, picture it with a black and gold helmet.
yeah.
Scott,
Today's post is a tribute to editors and makes evident the apparent lack of editing or effort in the writing on this blog. The phrase "in lieu of" is a fancy way of saying "instead of." If you weren't so concerned about sounding fancy, you might have used plain English and the plain English phrase is "in light of."
The only thing that could be worse is if the linebackers added a white neck roll, and they shortened the jerseys to show their belly buttons. On the plus side though, these jerseys match the shoes, and that's important to the kids these days.
Trojanaz,
I believe the large trojan logo was for their centennial year, they also had a large shoulder patch.
The Thursday game is on the road at Oregon State, so unless the Beevos decide to wear white at home, that's not going to happen. As other posters have said, SC has been selling a gold jersey in the bookstore for years, doesn't mean it's going to be on the field, it's just a way to make money. The jersey would look at lot better if there was at least a little cardinal trim, this looks like Iowa.
Since this is by far the most popular thread today, can we move on to jerseygate?
That seems to be something that posters would be unanimously behind.
