Regarding Redshirts
These are the true freshmen who played against Virginia: Tight end Blake Ayles, wide receiver D.J. Shoemate, linebacker Uona Kaveinga, safety Drew McAllister, nose tackle Jurrell Casey, defensive tackle Armond Armstead and defensive end Malik Jackson.
It will be interesting to see how many get meaningful playing time now that they cannot redshirt. As you know, I'm an advocate of redshirting unless a player can truly help the team.

You're an advocate of redshirting. That's important to know and good advice considering all the years you've been in coaching. He Scott, one of the reasons Pete recruits so well is because he PLAYS FRESHMEN! Stick to writing about song girls.
Brent is exactly right. If you recruit the best players in the world and promise them a chance to compete for playing time right away, what coach in their right mind would NOT play them if they deserved the time on the field? That's why players LOVE playing for Pete Carroll - he is a man of his word, and knows what he is doing.
Saving players by redshirting them are for teams like UCLA which need to save whatever measly talent it has from being massacred both physically and mentally during the season the will commence imploding on Monday against Tennessee at the Rose Bowl. It will be a great way to spend Labor Day, cold beer in the fridge, hot steaks on the BBQ, and another laughable lopsided loss by the gutless little ones from Westweird on the TV.
It would not appear to make any sense to redshirt a kid who is likely going away on a mission next season.
Sometimes it makes more sense to play the kids as a freshman and then, if necessary, redshirt the player later in his career. Many of the kids will eventually get hurt or excel and never want to stay for a fifth year. Others will realize that they need that extra year to actually get bigger and stronger and to increase the likelihood of contributing in a major way while at SC, and then in order to increase their chances for a pro career.
I think it will be a long time before SC sees the likes of a Sedrick and Ellis and Lawrence Jackson being around as fifth year seniors on the same team--at least on the defensive line. On the offensive line, that fifth year is often more likely to pay dividends. MJDavidson
Redshirting is a good idea an theory. Nothing like a 5th year senior. Problem is a lot do not stay. If they are going to leave at 3 or 4 years, no reason to redshirt.
And playing helps recruiting
Scott-we will lose 8-9 players from the defense next year. Pete needs to get these freshmen some playing time now.
Shoemate may be the only one that there may be a case to redshirt.
Who cares what you're an advocate of?
I note you haven't said one positive thing yet about the win...just saying.
Good comments but the game ball for this thread goes to TYLER!
We go through this every year. A player can redshirt anytime. Take a peak at CJ Gable. He started as a true freshman, got hurt last year and since we didn't waste his red shirt (Like you advise), he was able to take the year off and remain a RS sophmore this year.
Stick to tabloid writting, Scott, not football personal decisions.
