Spotlight Question

Q: Will this season's USC vs. Ohio State game be the most hyped regular season game of the Pete Caroll era? If not which game was and why?

A: It will not be bigger than the Orange Bowl against Oklahoma or the Rose Bowl against Texas but it might be the biggest regular-season game of the Carroll era. Ohio State has so many starters back (19) so on paper, it looks close. I really don't think the loser will be punished too much in the polls, especially in mid-September, so in some respects, the result might be overblown.

Well, let me see. The UGLA and leprachaun (spelling?) games are always big. I recall the games leading up to qualifying for the championship game being big. Auburn was ranked No. 1, I believe, when SC ventured there and destroyed the SEC myth. That was very big. Nebraska got big billing last year before the Big-12 myth was dispelled.

But USC-OSU may prove to be the biggest game yet. Heck, isn't the present game always the biggest? The schools have a history (albeit years ago in the 1970s in the Rose Bowl and again in 1985), and this will kick-start that old rivalry. And I think it is good for the SC program because for 6-weeks the boys will be pointing to getting ready for this game.

It should be something!

Easily the biggest regular season game. This game has been hyped to hell since January of this year and the hyper meter will be cranked up huge by September. The atmosphere will be like any regular season game of ANY team the last 5 years.

How about this hypothetical:

There's a pretty good chance that the loser is knocked out of the NC Game.
Let's say the winner trips up somewhere along the line as well, yet both teams win their conferences.

Would that be the least hyped BCS Bowl Game ever?

I'd like to thank Scott for both answering my question and making it the Spotlight Question. This CSUF grad is appreciative of the nod and devout in his passion for all things USC football.

I think Auburn was much bigger at the time and Nebraska was also at least as big. The Arkansas hype was big with their new star recruits, etc and the chance the SEC again lost to redeem itself. But now they are the past as Lawyer John said- we destroyed the myth of those two way over hyped conference (where's the PAC 10 love since the PAC 10 is the only place that can play with us?)

Ohio State is playing for its programs validity and if they lose it could fairly or unfairly start everything unraveling. SC is just trying to maintain the rep as the biggest, baddest team yet again. A loss would probably start some muttering about our offense in the post Chow era and it would dent PC and SC's image of invulnerability- fairly or unfairly.

This game is big like Nebraska and bigger than Arky but the Auburn game was bigger.

If we win we should declare ourselves the champion of all conferences. If we win a NC they should build a new college football hall of fame wing called "USC- In A League of Their Own" and SC should be given ND's tv contract at double the payout.

Do you all forget USC/ND 2005? Both teams were top 10. Weiss was running his mouth To Anyone who would listen. 40,000 at a pep rally to hear Rudy, Joe Montana, Regis, Tim Brown and a bunch of past Domers try to wake up the echoes. They had the green jerseys, they rolled the leprachan out in a giant Trojan Horse!! Weiss was popping off from the moment he was hired for the job, stating in his first team meeting that he had "never lost to Pete Carroll" in the pros and he was not going to start now. MOST IMPORTANT IT WAS USC vs. NOTRE DAME!!!!!

That game was hyped.

Yes, most hyped regular season game of the era. Both teams can still make the BCS champ with a loss. Troyjan, be sure to collect your free Song Girls Gone Wild video from Scott for being selected as the spotlight.

The SC/ND 05 game was definetly hyped up. But as the OSU game this year is the first (real) game for both teams and both are considered in the top 3 preseason, people have been talking about it for months and it will only escalate as the date approaches.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this one much more becuase I'm from the midwest originally so I've heard plenty of obnoxious Suckeye comments. CP was spot on that OSU fans are incredibly annoying and I can't wait for our boys to take a huge, smelly dump on them two straight years.
