Underpaid?

| | Comments (11) |

Forbes magazine determined that Pete Carroll is underpaid.

``At the head of the money class is University of Southern California head coach Pete Carroll, who pulled in a $4.4 million salary last year, including $400,000 in benefits and deferred compensation. Was he worth it?
``By our count, Carroll delivered more than his money's worth. He has led USC to a 34-5 record since 2005 (including the 2007 and 2008 Rose Bowl titles), a record that is 54% better than the median coach in our analysis. As a result, Carroll scores a 114, meaning college football's highest earning coach was 14 percent underpaid.''

If you go strictly by wins and losses I guess you could say he's 14% underpaid, but if you went by real value to the University, you'd have to say he's underpaid by 100% or even 2005. If you look at his value compared to oh, say a Paul Hackett, JRII, Larry Smith or Ted Tolner, Pete is way undervalued. How much extra does the school make in terms of attendance, merchandise sales, national exposure, etc. Pete Carroll brings in far more than the $4 million he's paid annually. Call him Caesar, call him stupid (Booty's finger), just make sure you call him our coach... because no matter what anyone says, Pete Carroll is the best coach in the country!

Uh, that's supposed to be 200%, not 2005.

It is all relative, is it not?

If I were ruling a country, I would pay my teachers, firemen and policemen $200,000 per year. A real good salary, although not filthy rich by any means.

I would pay my coaches, football, baseball, and basketball, $100,000 because their value to my country as entertainers is about 1/2 of the really important workers.

Of course, that said, are oil billionaires worth it? Well, they lucked into it. Are top movie stars and rock stars worth it? Well, it is the market that sets their worth, just like with stocks or gold, so be it.

So, LJohn is a socialist. Not surprising. How much annual compensation would legal professionals be granted by your omnipotent politburo? Granted, PC may be worth more than he is paid. But, he may receive incremental value from USC in non-monetary forms. Thus, he perceives his position as more valuable than just the absolute dollar value of his contract. Sunny weather, fantastic tradition, recruiting hotbed, supportive admin, and celebrity status as the king of LA. Some would pay USC for his opportunity. But, I support paying PC as much as we can afford. Hail the king!

PC's value will not truly be known until he is gone, if he ever leaves (hopefully not for a long time). The electricity around the campus, and at the games speaks for itself. Let him name is own price.

Privatize the profits...socalize the losses. The good'ole American way!

DWF, just try driving to work tomorrow without using your socialist roads and highways.

Couldn't agree more. The value of PC is huge. PC has EARNED his salary unlike Weis and Saban whom have automatically received millions prior to coaching a game.

In my book, if PC wants 6 million to stay, by all means give it to him even if that raises the price of tickets.

Lawyer John:

Believe it or not, there are firemen and policemen in Los Angeles who do make approximately $200,000.00 with overtime, and I'm not just talking about the heads of the respective departments.

Some people drive to work on the Orange County Toll Roads which are private, built on time and on budget. I didn't know the French followed SC football, but welcome SOT.

Parlez vous, francais, SOT?

How are you going to get to the private toll roads without the public infrastructure leading to it? Try driving through your neighbor's backyard. Next time your house is on fire, you're in a serious car accident, someone rapes your wife or girlfriend, remember to tell the firemen, rescue squad and police that you don't need their stinkin' help.

And when you're flying in to the Charlottesville Airport for the Virginia game, remember to tell the pilot you don't need no stinkin' help from the FAA to land your plane safely.
