Close game early, but USC's athleticism takes over in the 4th qtr. Sanchez with two TDs and a pick. Our defense forces 2-3 TO's.

Mike, I'll take that six days a week and twice on Sunday (or Saturday in this case). With Chris Wells now doubtful for Saturday's game you might have to revise that pick.
I love how SC guys talk up the Trojans in the media. Keyshawn, Carson, Salsbury, etc. We had to listen to guys from the "U" talk all that smack during the 90's, it's good to get some Pac-10 and West Coast love nowadays.

Depending on which source one consults, the current line is USC -11 or -11.5, and the current over/under is 44 to 45.
Using the -11 and 45 numbers, the experts are predicting that USC will win 28-17.
Actually, when 'Vegas sets odds it is not that it is predicting the score or the total points per se, but rather what it feels will generate 50-50 bets i.e. it might truly feel SC is only an 8 point favorite but has set the bar a bit higher because it feels the optimistic SC betters are willing to lay "bonus" points.

Your observation is true - certainly for the closing line. My hunch is that the opening line is at least the oddsmaker's attempt to predict the correct spread and final score. As you noted, as the game gets closer, and more bets come in for the favorite, then the line will go up. They do this to minimize the risk of losing badly to the bettors. Nevertheless, the oddsmakers are often fairly accurate in predicting the spread. I would venture to guess that most spreads do not move more than one or two points after the opening line.
I just like to combine the spread and the over/under to get a feel where the experts (or the bettors) believe the final score will be.
First Keyshawn, then Meshawn, and now USCshawn. I like them all. Fight On!

USC will beat Ohio State by more than 20 points, but then I will drop the Trojans to #7 on my AP ballot.
UCLA will keep it close at BYU, so I will jump them up to No. 12 overall.
