Bowl Talk
There are now 60 bowl-eligible teams for the 68 spots. There are 18 additional schools with five overall victories and at least one game remaining facing 12-game regular- season schedules.
In the Pac-10, the Vegas Bowl would like Arizona and the Emerald Bowl prefers Cal right now.

What would the NCAA do if less than 68 teams win 6 games?
Would the "lucky" bowls get their pick of 5 Win Teams?
Would they cancel the games?
If USC and Oregon State both win out, Oregon State gets the Rose Bowl bid. And if Michigan State beats Penn State, and Ohio State beats Michigan, I believe it would then be Oregon State vs. Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, while USC would either get a BCS bowl bid, or go to the Holiday Bowl.
USC should end the season at #4 assuming no craziness in the final few weeks (assumes losers of Alabama-Florida and TexTech-Oklahoma drop below USC). This would seem good enough to go to a BCS bowl, but would the BCS selection committee want 2 teams from a perceived weak Pac-10 in BCS bowls? If they don't, USC (despite having a better ranking and record, and a convincing win over Ohio State) would be sent to a lesser bowl game than Ohio State.
The BCS in all its glory.
Trojan_SF, the selection process is swayed by $$$$$. The perceived weakness of the Pac 10 would have no impact on USC's selection/non selection. It would all depend upon how many people are going to sit in front of their TV's and watch the game so they can try to sell them beer, soap, cars etc. We stack up pretty well in the $$$$$$$ category. Last time I checked, just the LA market alone had more potential viewers then most of the other states. Not only that, we are loved/hated by many across the Country. Just FYI, the sponsers don't care if the viewers love us or hate us, they just want them to watch the game so they can try and sell them beer, soap, car etc.

Hey SF:
If USC finishes fourth in the BCS (and assuming Oregon State goes to the Rose Bowl), USC is guaranteed an at-large spot in a BCS Bowl game. If you may recall, about four years ago, Texas successfully lobbied to get the No. 4 spot ahead of Cal, and then went to the Rose Bowl and beat Michigan, while Cal was left with the Holiday Bowl.
An 11-1 USC team is a lock for a BCS Bowl, partly because one of the three Big 12 teams cannot make a BCS Bowl (as only two are allowed per conference). My hunch is that the four at-large berths go to: loser of Florida/Alabama (headed to Suger Bowl), No. 2 Big 12 team (Fiesta Bowl), USC (if Beavers go to Rose Bowl), and Utah). The "bubble" at-large teams (like Ohio St.) are all hoping Oregon State loses, which would place USC in the Rose Bowl, and open up another at-large spot.
oops...Sugar Bowl.
