Ethics 101
Would Steve Sarkisian, who is the coach closest to Matt Barkley, try to lure the quarterback to Washington before he enrolls at USC next month? After all, it does fall under the ``competing'' mantra that Pete Carroll respects above all else.

That maneuver would definitely sever any friendship between the two individuals; however who says there was any friendship to begin with, only getting ahead. Hey! according to Pete, it's all about competition. If Sark grabs Barkley, that will show who has the recruiting finesse, won't it.
Hey Scott wouldn't that just piss off Jake Locker, the guy your Buddy Petros calls the best athlete in College Football. Not a smart way to start off. Next time at least put a little bit of thought into hypothetical controversy starting entries.
Perhaps you could start using the Haiku form. It is quite popular on Dohn's blog.
No chance. None. 0%. Although now that it's out there I'm sure the conspiracy nuts will have a ball with this until the day Barkley suits up.
It is completely ethical for Sark to do everything in his power to succeed in his new job. As far as I know, he's under no non-solicitation restrictions.
But unless Jake Locker is run over by a bus, and unless Barkley's church opens a Seattle branch office the only surprise next month will be that there's no surprise next month.
Question: Is it ethical to imply idle momentum on a topic that has absolutely no grounding in fact?
Anything is possible in Wolfee World.
Ex-Cop is mostly right. This isn't a question of ethics. If anything, it's a question of honor among thieves. Sark is an honorable guy.
If Sark were to suddenly recruit Barkley (or any other solid USC recruit), wouldn't he lose credibility? After all, Sark presumably has already pitched to Barkley that USC is his best choice, a great academic school, etc.
However, the same thought does not necessarily apply if a USC recruit calls Sark and said he wanted to change his commitment to UW (for whatever reason).
I'm not suggesting that anyone would want to commit to 0-12 Wash over USC. However, a rare situation might arise where a player commits to a school largely because of an assistant coach/guru (like a Norm Chow, perhaps?) Here, I think Barkley's allegiance to USC would far outweigh any relationship he developed with Sark. Nevertheless, I don't think you can ask a new coach to turn down a recruit who initiates the contact. In that situation, the coach might say "call me, I won't call you."
