Just A Thought

Isn't USC precisely the type of place where you go out and get some top-flight offensive coordinator. Nothing against promoting from within, but even a tyrant like Alabama coach Nick Saban went out after last season and hired Jim McElwain who was assistant head coach at Michigan State, the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders and offensive coordinator at Fresno State.

And Saban won't be playing for a National Championship this year either.

Pete Carroll has a higher winning percentage as well as more Conference and National Titles.

If anyone should be taking notes, it should be Saban.

No I agree with Scott. Its great to promote from within. It makes the players feel more comfortable, they may know the system better. However, this is what a lot of us fans wanted was to get rid of sark so we could go out an get a top offensive coordinator. As the voters have shown, stupidly scott is just as guilty, even though they know defense wins championships they wont give the top ranked defense a shot. They like the razzle dazzle of a high octane offense. Lets be honest we haven't had one of those in a while. You would think now would be the perfect time to go out and get an offensive coordinator that could help us get to the national championship game. If you cant beat them (ie change the system) you have to adapt.

That being said I would love to have our offense come out next year and have that spark we have been missing and prove me wrong

Pete doesnt have assistant coaches, he has gofers. Not a bad paying gig really and you get to see all the games for free.

Sadly for the USC fans Pete and his ego are not good enough to coach the entire team and therefore will never get back to the BCS title game.

I hope that USC89 is wrong, but I am not certain. Regardless, if we hire Carl Smith as an offensive assistant, then we have added a big resume guy to the squad, probably meeting Wolf's "top flight" qualifications. We don't know Morton very well, but from what we do know, he shows promise. Time with the Raiders, time with Sean Payton and the Saints, 2 years with Sark, WR improvement year over year. I think that Morton may be good, especially paired with Smith.

But, it is not a big-time hire. And, with established programs like OU and Texas adopting the spread and rewriting the offensive record books, the spread has gone mainstream and it is time to get on board with at least some of its concepts. Pete needs to swallow some pride and allow innovation. 2009 = Joe McKnight for Heisman year.

Great point, Boy Blunder!

Because what the hell has become of USC football under Pete Carroll??? Why has he tarnished the dynasty that Paul Hackett left him? Why didn't we try to hire Charlie Weis, Ty Willingham, Walt Harris, Jeff Tedford, Bill Doba, Mike Stoops, Dennis Erickson, Dirk Koettler, Karl Dorrell, or the legions of other successful coaches that consistently hand our asses to us year in and year out?

This is a dark day for SC football!!! When will we finally win 11 games in a season? compete for national titles? win a Pac 10 conference title? send our athletes to the pros? or even just produce the greatest defense in college football in the past 20 years, if not ever? or just instill invaluable life lessons and work ethic in 20 year old kids that will help them in life and not just on the football field.

People like you and USC'89 are petty, myopic and ungrateful.

If Pete is hiring gofers, then the real question is, "Why isn't everyone hiring gofers?" Seems to me that Pete has had better results than any other HC in college football.

Why because not every program can win on talent like USC can and does. That USC offense was so poorly coached it's amazing could win six games let alone eleven.

USC89 is dead on here, Carroll had a great staff when he was hired and it's gone to hell ever since. Since Davis Coach O and Chow left, or were run off, SC has won ZERO nc's, ZERO. Now he's hired another child yes boy to call Carroll's plays into the QB, whoooopie dooooo.

Rah Rah's Bite...I bet you don't have the balls to call John Morton "yes boy" to his face you asshole! How can you even consider the recent USC body of work anything other than a remarkable accomplishment? Sucks to be you douche bag!

Another example of SW's lack of knowledge and just farting in the wind again.

Saban employs a power running game, plays field position and likes his defense to basically win the game while the offense doesn't lose it. He's smart enough to use talent like Julio Jones but is never going to be going for the jugular like Oklahoma does all the time. I would give the new OC at Alabama some credit for steadying John Parker Wilson, a fairly average qb into having his best season, much more consistent, fewer int's, better decision-making, etc., etc. But it's Saban's offense.

rrb is an idiot and when he wakes up in the morning he will still be an idiot. I think he posts his vile to get a rise out of everybody. He is definitely not an SC fan or graduate because he lacks class and intelligence, all he spews is negativism towards the program. And yes Goliath he is a douche bag and he likes vinegar.

You know who else was a quarterbacks coach for the Raiders? That's right, Steve Sarkisian.

And do you know who else was an assistant at Fresno State? You got it, Lane Kiffin.

And aren't these the same guys Scott's been huffing and puffing about the past few years? And now he wants Pete to get someone like that? It's not so much the job title or the program you're coming from, it's really all about innovation and the courage to call the plays.

FIGHT ON!

sureshot - awesome post!

I do agree with Scott though that if there is a big time OC out there, let's go get him. The problem though is who? Let's hear some names.
