NFL Scout Talks
Some of you kept asking for an NFL scout's opinion of the offense, so we asked one who watched every game and attended the UCLA game.
``They try to make it seem like they're doing a bunch of different things but they're not. (Steve Sarkisian) wants to make it look like he wants to run the ball but he really wants to throw it.
``The running plays are simple and they do quick passes or play-actions. They do a good enough job with good players. They get the guys to line up in the right spots. This is not a well-oiled machine. It's not clean.''
Later today, we'll have his evaluation on the UCLA game.

I think that is a fair assessment, and is exactly why we need to hire a good offensive coordinator. Gus Malzahn is a better choice than John Morton.
agree, offense is too predictable
The Donkey knows that he would trust Pete's decision over any High School kid or Podunk town resident posting here.
Well I don't think it took an NFL scout's opinion to fill me in on our offensive prowess.....Where can I apply to be an NFL scout? I knew the offense was such halfway into the season.
Unlike most of the people who participate in this blog I remember the Tollner/Smith JRobII Years and thinking how nice it would be to go to the Rose Bowl every three years or so.
This is one of the greatest runs in recent college football history.
Scott, you need to change your Depends!
' Not well oiled. It's not clean ' That explains exactly what we all have been saying since 2005.
So it is the execution and not the play calling....Watching how other schools (Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Cincinnati) effectively run their offenses (with equally talented players?)really begs the question of WHY? This ineffective offense (17 vs CAL, 17 versus Arizona, 21 against Oregon State including a prevent defense TD late) is the reason we were not in the BCS Title game discussion. We had something like 60+ games over 20 points at one time, ending with the 2006 UCLA loss. Now, 20 points is a great accomplishment even with the defense getting 3 and outs all day long. Something is terribly wrong here.
Hold the presses. Gnossos, aka Pete Carroll's colon parasite, agrees that the offense is predictable ? Did hell freeze over?
Hey SCinHB, do you like playing slow, ranked below SC big ten opponents ranked year after year instead of playing for the glass football?? I thought so.
SCinHB,
I think the majority of comments here relate to a frustration with 'Under Achievement' that we all feel that rests solely on the coaching staff. The talent on this team is equal to any in the nation. However; can you imagine Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Graham Harrell or Colt McCoy achieving what they have this season with the USC offensive brain trust calling the plays, I can't.
We are without question miles beyond the Tollner, Smith and Hackett level, so stop reminding us, instead try and understand with the excellent talent we have, we are one step away from the prize that is woefully apparent due to mediocre offensive coaching and strategy since the departure of Norm Chow.
And No, I don't want a replay with Chow, I want something new and dynamic, an offense like the one we once had.
T4 - Fair enough
Just don't forget how good we have it. Florida with Tebow and Harvin is like SC with Matt & Reggie. Hard to Beat and other than Florida nobody else comes close.
T4,
You're one buying into the nonsense I see. Tebow, Harrell, Bradford and McCoy have exactly the same achievement USC has they are all on teams with at least one loss. Are you really suggesting you'd rather have Texas Tech's offense and 2 losses than USC's and 1 loss?
We're one step away from the prize because the defense (the strength of this year's team despite those that think it should have been the offense) had a letdown game at OSU and got ripped apart in the first half. We also had the misfortune of playing in a very down conference against teams the rest of the country had written off after the WAC demolition early on. That's why we're not in the big dance. We're the most balanced team of the 1 loss teams after Florida ranking in the top 15 on both offense and defense.
