I hear he's a "master" at calling plays. Should we nickname him Master Bates?

I have to admit, I laughed at that joke.

So actually Morton was demoted before the season started. Did he fall on caesars sword or what. I'm sure Morton is feeling special right about now. Petey is so loyal to his staff. No wonder Chow left.

I don't think this is a big deal. Bates and Morton, along with PC, will have play by play dialogue regarding playcalling. It's just that Bates will give the go ahead for the sideline signal to the QB. Boy, what a nice hire by PC!!! And, a Schottenheimer was interested too? Seriously, the SC OC position may be the premier assistant coach position in the coach. There is no better stepping stone right now.

Most seem to have forgotten but Chow had received a promotion and a hefty raise (to Asst. Head Coach) before he threw a hissy fit and decided to quit USC. He quit after Pete took away the play-calling duties from him and gave them to Sark. Boo-hoo.

Chow saw it as Pete trying to minimize his visibility instead of what it really was - an attempt by Pete to build his staff so as to ensure it could continue uninterrupted when Chow inevitably left to become a head coach somewhere else. Pete's not stupid. He knew Chow was immensely popular and that eventually he would get that head coaching job somewhere else. Better get Sark/Kiff some game experience while Chow was still in the fold...He never intended to throw Sarkiffin into the fire without a safety net but Norm left and those plans went out the door. Norm wanted to have his cake (USC OC) and eat it too (Head Coach elsewhere).

Pete wasn't about to lose all his offensive play-calling expertise in one fell swoop. Sark and Kiff needed promotions or they would leave and Norm had actively begun looking elsewhere. What else was Pete to do? Ignore it and risk losing them all? It's not like he dismissed Norm - he actually gave him a raise and the opportunity to be involved with the team on a higher level than just an X's and O's guy.

Chow was a petty idiot. Had he stayed on as Assistant Head Coach and learned something new he would likely be a head coach by now instead of jumping to the NFL only to be fired and return to his old position at a mediocre football program. Everyone acts like Chow had just been demoted prior to his leaving. Last time I checked a demotion doesn't come with a fat raise. Talk about re-writing history.

Chow's the Benjamin Button of co-ordinators. His career's begun aging in reverse.

OC BYU (small-time college)
OC NC State (mid-level college football)
OC USC (big-time college)
OC NFL (big-time NFL)
OC UCLA (mid-level college football)

What's next? High School head coach? OC Bowling Green?

So,is it Bates calling Carroll's plays? Morton relaying Carroll's plays to Bates? Carroll, Bates and Morton on a three way clusterfrick call before each play? BAtes on his own? Morton and Bates combined?
