Should he lobby for some other team?

Instead of making snide jokes about Pete apparently forgetting about losing to OSU in his statement (which he didn't by the way - all the top teams have 1 loss) a good journalist would be asking the important questions. For example...

1. Why is USC required to go undefeated to get consideration for the championship game when Big 12 or SEC teams aren't? This disrespect of the Pac-10 has to stop sometime. You had LSU ranked well after they had already been blown out in 3 games!! Would you do that for USC after 1 game?

2. Why is USC's loss ON THE ROAD to a 9 win team so much worse than Florida's loss AT HOME to 8 win Miss St.

3. Why is it OK for some SEC teams to schedule 8 home games in a 12 game season (4 of which are against Div-II and bottom-feeding FBS schools)? Why doesn't the NCAA mandate a 6 home and 6 away schedule or a maximum 1 Div-II team schedule? If the SEC teams lose only 2 of their 8 home games they are already bowl eligible!! It's nonsense and no one's talking about it.

The teams in the Pac-10 travel more and play better OOC schedules than almost every team outside of Hawaii and they get NO credit for it.
They got hammered early in the year by the media for losing to teams like BYU, TCU, Boise St and Utah. Teams which it turned out were actually very good and all won 10+ games. Already USc is catching grief for having San Jose St on their schedule. Have you seen the dogs the SEC teams are playing?!?

Did anyone notice that ABC/ESPN analysts brought up the Plus One system several times yesterday? That is what we are getting in 2011 folks, not a playoff.
ESPN gets the contract and suddenly there is a big push for a Plus One? If you are not in the Top 4 in the BCS rankings you would be screwed. At #5, USC could not leap up to #2 beating #8 Penn State.
The Final Four would be Cotton: #1 OU-#4 Alabama vs Sugar: #2 Florida-#4 Texas. (The Cotton will be the BCS tie-in for the Big 12 when it moves to Dallas Cowboy Stadium) PAC 10 might want to ditch the Rose or kickout the Big 10 if this happens..

@T&T: You can take what ESPN talent says about Plus One or playoffs with a giant grain of salt. The real pattern here is that ESPN signs the long term BCS contract, then lets their talent continually trash the system any way they wish to curry favor with the audience and stir up controversy for its talk shows. At first, to knowledgeable college football fans, it looks like the talent is rebelling, but when it's all of them all the time with some new wrinkle each week, you know there's no sincerity. It's like radio talk shows who used to pull the Pete Rose card when their ratings were down or they didn't have anything to talk about. For 15 years, that topic never failed to keep an audience and overload the boards.

Bryan Caplan, an economics professor at George Mason University, might see this as an application of his Median Voter Theory. Well, we have the Median College Football Viewer Theory. They don't know that ESPN profits from the current BCS arrangement while sending its talent out to trash it just enough to keep it controversial so we all watch and talk about it. Endlessly.

If you really want to know how to solve this... Pete Carroll gets on the phone with Mac Brown and agrees to schedule a game on January 15 in Phoenix with both teams wearing their home jerseys and neither team charged for a time out. Suddenly next year, after bowl season, every team will schedule its own national championship game and all the coaches will take credit for being so original.

T&T -

I saw that as well, but thought that there would be a final BCS ranking with #1 vs. #2, and that it wouldn't be just #1-#4 eligible for the national championship game. But, since there is no actual plus one system in place, I really have no idea how it would work, and you could be correct.

A Plus One system just seems like a stop gap measure to a true playoff system. If we assume that Texas beats tOSU, then we'll still have 3 teams claiming that they should be playing for the national championship (winner of OU/Florida, Texas and USC). Therefore, a Plus One doesn't solve anything, since one team will still be left out.

Bosco-ESPN can have it both ways with the Plus One. They can have several highly rated must-win games during the regular season, then have a 12/31 and 1/1 stuffed with at least 2-4 "playoff type" BCS games.
An added bonus is that this will of course still be controverisal. Even an 8 game playoff would never work because how can a fan afford to travel to 3 extra games with hotel, air ticket, rental car, etc. Even if USC got Holiday Bowl-Rose-Rose what would the cost of the tickets alone be?

Trojan SF-The Plus One would be a pairing of the #1 and #2 BCS ranked teams AFTER the BCS games are played. However the BCS bowl tie-ins would still dicate a teams chances just like in the 70's and 80's. Rose would still keep USC-PSU, Sugar would take Florida and an At large, the new Cotton would take OU an at large, the Fiesta and Orange would be all at large with the ACC abd Big east getting automatics.
This year the Sugar would likely be #2 UF vs #4 Texas and the Cotton #1 OU and #4 Alabama. USC is at #5 playing #8 PSU. Very hard to move up when the Sugar and Cotton would be defacto Final 4 games. Other BCS matchups wopuld be va tech-Utah and Cincy-TTech-Boise??
