Carroll Q & A

| | Comments (20) |

Here's another comment from Pete Carroll following yesterday's team meeting.

Q: Would you have thought Mark Sanchez would go pro at the end of the season?

A: That's part of the reason I found myself really compelled to really drive home the points because i didn't think this is how Mark would go and I think most of his teammates would've thought the same way.
It wouldn't be first and foremost on his mind to get to the league as soon as possible. I wanted to make sure that we uncovered whatever issues had been leading him in that direction. I was representing his family on this as well. They really wanted us to pound it out and get to the point of everything.

Peter Carroll said there's a 62% failure rate for undergraduate QB's going to the pros. Does anyone know what the failure or success rates are for QB's that stay in school for 5 years before going pro?

Sam Gilbert Author Profile Page said:

Or how about the failure rate of quarterbacks that stay in school for four years and graduate.

Isn't that what category Sanchez should be in?

LAWYER JOHN Author Profile Page said:

Well, failure is a relative term. Some of these players don't care so much about making it big in the NFL as long as they get their hands on a couple or more millions to set them up for life.-- You think Ryan Leaf, an all-time bust, cares so much about his NFL career when he looks at his bank statement each month? Perhaps Sanchez has similar thoughts.

Scott, glad to see that PC is still talking to you after yesterday's events.

I love Pete. He's given us the best run of teams in our history. Maybe this wasn't his finest hour. Maybe he's a bit frustrated. Best thing about this is that it happened seven months before fall camp. Bring in another top recruiting class, have a great spring, make up with the Sanchez family and we're good to go for 2009. Fight on.

It just shows how much Pete loves his players. He treats them as if they were his own kids. I mean don't you guys remember the speech your dad gave you when you insisted on marrying a girl you met at a dive bar just 3 months ago? Well I do! and Pete's frustration mirrors that of my parents

rejn Author Profile Page said:

SANCHEZ MADE THE RIGHT DECISION. HE'S GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE IN THE SPRING. HE'S DONE WITH COLLEGE. IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON AND BEGIN THE NEXT CHAPTER IN HIS LIFE. IT'S TIME HE BEGINS TO WORK AND GET PAID FOR WHAT HE DOES. IT MEANS HE STARTS AT THE BOTTOM AND WORKS HIMSELF UP. THERE'S NO BETTER TIME TO START THEN NOW.

CONTRAST THIS TO WHAT THE BOY WONDER DID A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. STAYED IN SCHOOL SO HE COULD PARTY, MAKE IT WITH THE GIRLS, LAZY, IRRESPONSIBLE, AND GAIN ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FROM THE EXPERIENCE EXCEPT A CHILD THAT HE WAS/IS UNPREPARED TO RAISE AS A FATHER, AND IT'S PROBABLY STILL TRUE TODAY.

SANCHEZ SEEMS TO HAVE A MUCH BETTER HEAD, HE GETS IT, AND HE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION TO GET ON WITH HIS LIFE/CAREER ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

LESS IS MORE. CARROLL HAS TOO MUCH INFORMATION AND IS PROBABLY OVER ANALYZING ALL THE DATA TO THE POINT WHERE HE'S NOT OBJECTIVE NOR CAN HE GIVE THE BEST ADVICE. A VERY SELF CENTERED MAN. I GUESS THAT'S WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MAKE SURE YOU HAVE "ALL THE INFORMATION..."

MARK, GO FOR IT! AT LEAST YOU KNOW HOW TO TAKE A RISK, AND THAT WILL DO NOTHING BUT HELP YOU IN THE FUTURE WHETHER YOU'RE PLAYING FOOTBALL TEN YEARS FROM NOW, OR DOING SOMETHING ELSE PRODUCTIVE. THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT AND YOU GET IT. CONGRATULATIONS!

It was widely reported that PC went to Hawaii on vacation. PC returned from Hawaii the day/night before the press conference. Would it have made any difference had he canceled the vacation and exhaust every minute trying to convince Mark to stay? Mr. PC didn't have anything to lose had he done so, hello?
I had a conversation with a retired USAF colonel. He told me that both enlisted and officer members take their lap tops on vacation with them in order to stay current b/c the system is so competitive. Not doing that would potentially hurt a promotion. Back to Mr. PC doesn't this analogy apply? If a CFB HC wins he stays for another year. If he doesn't he might not have another year. You are the jury please tell me, thank you.

What?

BoscoH Author Profile Page said:

@El Cap... It wouldn't have made a difference. That's probably the one week he gets every year to just chill so long as he's taking the teams to BCS bowls every year. Everybody needs occasional time off. PC doesn't get to just ditch work for a day here and there like most highly paid professionals.

@rejn... You've captured his attitude perfectly. I'd only add that any 22 year old kid who would forego a multi-million dollar paycheck for a year has a screw loose. When you don't have $2 million, you take the check. If you have $2 million in the bank, maybe you can be picky about how to make the next $5 or $10 million. But that first check pretty much sets himself, his parents, and his family up for life. And it's hard taking advice to forego the check from someone who is already getting paid like that. What's PC gonna do if Mark gets hurt or his draft stock in 2010 falls to zero? Break him off $2 million for giving bad advice?

I still wish he'd come back because I'm an selfish SC fan living in a decade's long fantasy world where we compete for the NC every year. But it's Mark's choice, and I understand and support it.

Marquis players like that in CFB buy insurance policies to cover just that situation.

I bet Tebow already has one, Bradford and McCoy will both have them and if Mays doesn't, he'd better get one.

I agree with rejn that Mark did the right thing. Good luck to him. I will miss him next season but if he were my son, I'd have hoped that he did what he did.
As far as PC is concerned..he tried everytning he knew how to do to convince Mark to get more seasoning. Whether it was for Marks sake, or for Pete's sake, he obviously desperately wanted Mark to return for his senior season. He competed and it didn't turn out his way. That's just the way it is. I'm glad PC competed as hard for what he thought was right though. It makes the Trojans stronger imho.

I'm glad to read your posts again El Capt.

Hey Compadre,
Where the hell have you been?

I think PC left town thinking Mark was going to stay, with support from the Sanchez family. It sure looked like he was blindsided by this. Wasn't Pete also doing some recruiting in Hawaii? Specifically Manti Te'o?

El Capitán Author Profile Page said:

I am NOT your damn compadre. You earn that just like you earn respect and friendship.I am very well aware of Manti Te'O. I check recruiting just about daily. I don't buy that recruiting point. Hawaii is five hours away by jet from anywhere on the west coast. On my way to Viet-Nam I flew from El Toro to HI.
The point is Mark's decision/business required his [undivided attention]. That is WHY he gets paid $4 or $5mil/yr. It was critical and imperative for him to be present for a crucial leadership/business decision. It can NOT be sugar coated. A CFB HC is NOT a 9-5 job with paid vacations and holidays. Rest my case.
Thank you

El Capitan, welcome home.

But do you think it would have made any difference if Pete were to have been here all week talking to Mark. It sounds as if they had a few long bull sessions, and Mark heard from Pete he should not go, apparently heard from his parents he should not go, but in the end he made his own decision-- to go.

It is his life, he spent 4-years at SC, and he is 22 years old. He is a man. He made his own decision.

And quite frankly, I am not sure if I would not have made the same decision if I were in his shoes. I mean, millions of dollars staring you in the face. Come on, folks, what would you do?

Mark is NOT the point is the minute the Rose Bowl ended PC himself said one game does NOT make you nor break you. PC has been around. Obviously he took a lot for granted otherwise he would have taken that vacation. If he had not taken the vacation we would NOT be having this argument. It was also widely reported that he was undecided and PC still went on vacation. Furthermore had he stayed instead of going then he could have unequivocally said I tried every mean available to me. Come on LJ from a lawyer's point of view you can't say he did anymore than we can. That is point número UNO(number one for you gringos!)and número dos(number two gringos!) being present shows you're doing your job. To be perfectly clear that is [ leadership]. LJ please put an accent over the second a in El Capitán:

I have to restate my first two sentences again:
Mark is NOT the point the point is the minute the Rose Bowl ended PC himself said one game does NOT make you. Obviously he took a lot for granted otherwise he would have NOT taken that vacation. PC did NOT say anything about breaking.

As most of you know I am Mark's fan número UNO. I am NOT questioning his decision. I question PC's leadership and the timing of his vacation.

Ideally like most of you and as a loyal Trojan fan I'd wish he could have come back in 09.
Thanks

El Cap and others,

Word is that before Pete left it was common knowledge that Mark was leaning heavily staying. He had even been saying it to numerous players up to that point. I'm sure the last thing Pete expected was to get a call in Hawaii from Garrett saying he needed to get his ass back here pronto...
