Draft Position

There are already draft projections discussing Mark Sanchez being a top 10 pick. But how bad would it be to get picked in the 15-18 range? Chances are you get selected by a better team and would not be force-fed into the lineup right away.

He's being listed as the #1 prospect in the draft wolfy
USC coach Pete Carroll might not think quarterback Mark Sanchez, a fourth-year junior, is ready, but NFL scouts and personnel men are happy to see him among the 46 underclassmen to declare for the 2009 NFL draft. In fact, four of the top five picks could be underclassmen, including Sanchez as the No. 1 overall pick.

With predraft workouts having begun this week leading to Saturday's East-West Shrine Game, Sporting News draft expert Russ Lande, a former NFL scout, provides an updated mock draft (* -- denotes underclassmen):

No. 1 Lions. Mark Sanchez*, QB, USC

Sanchez is NFL-ready and has a similar skill set to Matthew Stafford, but does not make the mistakes under pressure that Stafford does occasionally.
you see that wolfy?
These sources have real names unlike your made up ones

So that's why Pete was so upset. Detroit: Where high draft picks go to die.

That's the difference, Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan were fortunate, they went to good teams, if you go to a bad team, good luck, just ask Jim Plunkett.

The evaluation from the NFL listed Mark going in the second round. Mark will be lucky if he goes in the bottom half of the first round. If goes to Detroit, I will openly weep for him.

Desmo so what? Carson Palmer went to Cincy! Damn the difference! #1 picks go to the worse teams, DUH? There's also a chance that Detroit go after Stafford. The worst Mark can do is going to the 49ers who are about four players away from being a good competitive play-off team which is at least a $15 Mil signing bonus.

I'm surprised Wolf didn't post a picture of Matt Cassel.

Hopefully he talked with John Elway during his evaluation period. He could threaten to play in Carson Palmer's Professional Cornhole League if the Lions draft him.

Well then with all of the #1 projections for Mark being the #1 pick I wonder how he is going to feel wearing powder blue. How ironic! Maybe all of those $$$ will make him feel better.

PC will have some egg on his face if Mark is a top 10 pick.

Mike Williams was the no. 10 pick of the draft (Lions). Carroll said the same things about Williams. Williams, not Carroll, has egg on his face. Well, at least he can fall back on his degree...oh yeah, he didn't stick around to get that either.

Carroll is right that Sanchez has not maximized his potential. Perhaps Sanchez wows everyone in the pre-draft workouts and goes in the Top 10. (By the way, will Sanchez really be able to finish his degree while prepping for the draft?) He may well get his big payday that financially justifies his decision.

As for Wolf's post, if Sanchez is drafted 15-18th, then he did not maximize his draft position by leaving early, and it would cost him millions (although he would still be rich by society's standards). With another year in college and 10 returning starters, Sanchez could have passed Bradford and McCoy as the top QB in 2010 (Tebow is slotted as an H-back).

Putting aside the money (unrealistic, I know), how well will Sanchez perform next year if he has to play because of injury or a high draft position? I see picks aplenty.

Lastly, I just don't see the Lions picking a QB with the 1st pick. They just hired the Titans DC as the head coach. The emphasis will be on defense. Det gave up 32 ppg, by far the worst in the NFL.

Carroll said the projections had Sanchez going in the second round. Either he had old projections or he was a liar.

It's less important about where he goes in the draft and more important about giving him the time to develop. Palmer went #1 but got to sit until he was ready. Alex Smith didn't get that chance the same way. Whomever takes Sanchez should get a reliable veteran and let Sanchez sit the entire first season. Let the hype die down and build for the future.

I'm sorry he's leaving only for my own selfish reasons though! He is a smart kid, has done well in school and will find a way to work out the completion of his degree. He's a big kid with a huge arm, takes coaching well and will have a good chance to succeed in the NFL. There are a lot of you who hated that he beat out the competition and got the job this season, now you are all pissed that he's leaving you. What a bunch of fickle folks out here. He is going to get drafted probably within the first 10 picks. He's going to learn on the run, which btw is how he plays...His big arm and his intelligence and leadership abilities are his best assets. I'm in his corner and predict that he'll have a nice career in the pro's. PC was just doing his job and supporting his opinion in his dealing with MS. He just didn't have enough to persuade MS from his dream. The facts that the 3 Heisman candidates all stayed in school is to Marks benefit. He's the smart one. He will have a smile on his face when he walks into his bank! That is most likely why he went to USC in the first place. He used is talent to earn that scholorship which he deftly used to the max. Viva Sanchez! It's now time to Fight On with our two golden backups..Both of them will be successful because of their athletic abilities. If you think that Aaron Corp is chopped liver then you are wrong! Mitch Mustain is going to be an extremely good backup and actually, Matt Barkley will push them both! I think that the future at USC is very bright and that this team can be a big factor in the upcoming BCS battle. USC is blazing fast, extremely deep, will have a very nice recruiting class and has the players to compete in a big way. You all should really be positive about your team. I am and I'm also very proud of the Trojans! Fight On!!

I think Sanchez has made a huge mistake by coming out early. While I have no doubts that he has the skills to play in the NFL, I think he's going to fall to late first round, maybe lower. Why? I think GM's are going think long and hard about committing big money to what could possibly be a one year wonder who was lucky enough to play on an already very good team. Anyone remember such "can't miss" prospects like Ryan Leaf, Rick Mirer or Andre Ware? Another successful year at USC would have given a better picture of his worth, which probably would have put Sanchez in the top 10 category.

A team can survive a whiff on a first round bust at most positions, but picking the wrong QB can set a team back for years. Has Sanchez really proved his worth yet? Maybe, but if I were an NFL GM I'd think long and hard before committing a top 10 pick on a guy with a thin resume.
