It should be noted that you never have anything positive to say about the USC football program. Ever.
I get that being a voice of dissent gets you hits and gets you noticed. Heavens knows Pete has enough yes-men around him already. But seriously?
According to the Rocky Mountain News (below) it looks like Bates was the moving party and left them.
Also around Christmas time he was given a raise and an extension on his contract, this was before Shanahan's termination.

So I am confused by Wolfie's "was not retained in the coaching changeover," comments.
It's called research Gnossos and Scott Wolf don't do no stinkin' research. Research takes time and patience, Ignorance takes brass balls and a certain amount of don't give a shit...
Research is for journalists and for blog-readers that care even a little bit about truth/integrity in reporting. Scott cares not for these trivial things. Cheerleaders on the other hand...

It means he had some kind of buy-out from the Broncos, so SC got some kind of break on his salary.
He got a raise and contract extension on Christmas Day from the Bronco's owner. Currently he was on the lists of the Raiders, TB Bucs, Denver, U of Tennessee.

No salary break for Usc if he left the Broncos voluntarily. Only if he had been fired.

Here's my speculation on the approximate timeline of this stunning announcement of the injection of new, high pedigree coaching blood to USC's offense:
* Dec 1 - Tennessee hires precocious wunderkind Lane Kiffin.
* Dec 5 - U Washington hires Steve Sarkisian.
* Decemberish - Kiffin approaches Jeremy Bates, who has U Tenn ties, about Tenn OC position; Bates elects to stay w/ Broncos.
* Decemberish - Kiffin approaches Jim Chaney, St Louis Rams O-Line coach about Tenn OC position.
* December 30 - Broncos shockingly fire Shanahan
* December 31 - U Tenn hires Jim Chaney as OC.
* January 11 - Broncos hire Josh McDaniels, former Pats OC, as head coach. Bates unexpectedly enters job market.
* Jan 16 - Carl Smith interviews with Cleveland Browns after previously accepting USC QB coach position.
* January-ish - PC asks Kiffin for referrals to replace Sark. Kiffin refers Bates.
* January 19 - PC hires Bates.
* January 19 late - Scooped Scourge Scott Wolf does his thing.
Any agent that would let him walk away from a brand new contract should be fired. Now way SC is paying 1 million.
It is well established that Wolf's blog is not the place for breaking and/or accurate information. However, if you want to know about missing podiums, broken ice cream machines, feelings, leaky roofs, or how to stalk cheerleaders, then Wolf is your man.
I highly recommend that everyone pay a visit to the Ruin blog to see the difference. Sc was paying Sark $700K and Holt $500K. I don't see why it's difficult to believe that they've agreed to pay Bates about $1M.
Sources corrected the salary figure of $1 million, which was originally reported. Instead, Bates will be paid less than $300,000 by USC. The Broncos are obligated to pay the balance of what he is owed by the NFL team. -- ESPN
