Answer Monday! (Part 7)

I can relax now that the Mitch Mustain mystery got solved.

I too, was going to ask about how the admissions process works. When they say a guy doesn't qualify to sign a letter of intent, are they saying something like, after three and one-half years of high school, the guy is so far behind in the number of core courses required, or that the guys' test scores are so low, that the chances of him/her making them up are remote, so remote that they refuse to allow the letter of intent, even tho a semester and one or two sessions of summer school remain? Who are they to make such a decision? Maybe a kid like Metcalf or Burfict will realize now that they have to buckle down and study hard when the choice lies between a university and a JC, and a signed letter of intent could provide more motivation since it goes along with a scholarship to the university of their choice. I think the school should let them sign their letter of intent, after all, they can always rule them ineligible, if that happens to be the case, at the appropriate time, whether it's when the grades are posted after the final summer session or before. I
just don't see how they can do that now, when so much
time is left.
Scott, is this a change in SC's policy or something?
Scott, we realize that Arizona State can give out 25 special admits if they want, and we can only get a handful through[and what's the reason for that--prestige?]
We should have a level playing field for our athletes; but I digress; my issue here is this whole letter of intent business and how the admissions department seems to be really hurting us. Many of my friends are really angry. Can you help explain? Thanx for letting me sound off.

A: Every recruit must go through an admissions committee, that is independent of the athletic dept. They approve whether the recruit is admitted. Usually, about 5-7 are considered special admissions. When Paul Hackett was here, there were less special admits. When Pete Carroll arrived, things loosened up a little bit. But if you have too many core classes outstanding or a GPA that is too low, the committee might not approve you in the fall. You can either sign elsewhere or take your chances and try to get into USC.

Do you think Kevin Ellison is droping in the NFL Draft due to his injury and not playing in the all star game? How do you think he will do in the NFL?

A: It is still very early in the draft analysis game. Especially for Ellison, who did not participate in the Senior Bowl. Look at Sam Baker last year. His stock supposedly dropped up until USC's Pro Day, where he was even practicing at center because people believed he was dropping. But Baker ended up getting selected in the first round and it all worked out for him. As for Ellison, he is very hungry and very coachable. I think he'll be a fine pro.

Try to get into USC? When did it become difficult...for anyone? Trust me, if the kid is good enough, they'll find a way to get him admitted. And, to shore up any questionable grades, the young lads can go take Spanish down the street at Los Angeles Trade Tech. Or ballroom dancing.

Blue Bruin -

I hope you appreciate the double standard. If an SC fan posted something like this on BRO, all you wimps would be crying to have him banned - and your moderator would do it.

Even on Dohn's blog, there is little tolerance for any jabs from an SC fan. There were numerous posts to ban me on Dohn's blog for posting something that was factual, not even an opinion.

You "guys" can dish it out (anonymously) but you sure can't take it.

Captain Idiot:

I see that brokenfacemask.com blog was taken down after it was revealed to have been a whole lot of lies and absurd conspiracies. The author of that blog was threatened with numerous lawsuits for libel and he immediately removed everything from that blog and shut it down permanently. That is precisely why he had been banned from USC events. He's a fraud and a liar.

And who does he have to thank for his blog being shut down after two days when it had been online for several years? The idiot captain, of course. It was only because you linked to it dozens of times that people went there and discovered his lies. It was because of you he was threatened with libel lawsuits for his lies. If you had said nothing, his blog would still be up there for everyone to read, lies and all.

Congratulations, you are officially the most stupid person on earth who believes anything on the Internet.

Broken Facemask, R.I.P.

Ha! Ha! Ha! I laugh in the idiot captain's face!

The ballroom dancing comment is a reference to Matt Leinart. And if I'm not mistaken, the reason he was taking ballroom dancing was because he had already graduated, but still needed to be enrolled to play his final season. In that context, it's rather a poor example for the point you're trying to make, wouldn't you say? Dumb, even?

And did you even read the article you provided? It's not quite as insidious as you'd like us to believe. College students take classes at JC's. Four year schools make evaluation regarding which JC credits they'll accept and which they won't. Happens all the time. But for you? Oooo, the criminality of it all...

Idiot. You make it sound as if there's actually a qualitative difference between UCLA and USC. There isn't. Except in football, that is.

Why would I be banned? For insulting a specific poster? No, didn't do that. Foul language? Nope, didn't do that either. So I took a shot at USC admission standards, then noted that schools find a way to get players through some of the hurdles. Then I posted a link to an actual article from the Times. Read the UCLA blog--there are plenty of Trojan fans, and Bruins fans, writing things a lot worse than that. In fact, in the USC threads, almost any comment about Teo and Toma is followed up by some allusion to a homosexual relationships. That is grounds for being banned, not what I wrote.

Bruins read homosexuality into everything.

Another thing about ballroom dancing. UCLA's Alfred Aboya has graduated, but he's working on a master's degree and is taking a full schedule of graduate classes. So, there are alternatives to taking just enough courses to be eligible.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
