Curious Case Of Te'o (Part III)
I read an item in the Press-Enterprise blog last night that said when Manti Te'o informed UCLA he was going to play for the Bruins, Norm Chow allegedly said it was OK as long as he did not go to USC. The item seems to be gone now. Did anyone else see it?

You mean this?

DC has the link.
If it happened, it's disgraceful. See my response to that Freedomblogg entry.
Sounds like Chow is as bitter towards Carroll as Carroll is towards Holt and Sark.
Sorry, I guess I was wrong when I posted earlier that Wolfeee couldn't blog about what Gallip said in the LB's meeting, because he didn't get his copy of the L.A. Time... Apparently Wolfeee reads the Press Enterprise to find out what is going on over on campus. Fight On!
Rah Rah...
What are talking about? Holt called and asked for tapes. TAPES??? Are you kidding me? He was on the staff? why would he asked for tapes?
Re Chow - what was Carroll supposed to do with Chow? He publically said he wanted to be a HC. He interviewed for open positions. If you were a CEO and your awesome #2 was interviewing for CEO positions at other companies, wouldn't you try to lessen the blow of the inevitable departure by making sure that someone else on your staff could step up? And yes that includes transfering responsibilities. If you don't get that, then you have never been in managerial roles bud. PC did nothing wrong.
But by sending Teo into the pits at ND, with a coaching staff that has an aweful track record at developing talent, then Chow didn't just behave like a bitter old man. He threw a poor, trusting kid under the Fat Panda's bus... Nice... man.. nice...
Taunter, you're a moron.
Sure. and you are a genius.
Taunter is a typical USC Rah Rah idiot, and yes, I am a genius
The point spread for the UCLA game just climbed to 35.
Scott, are you staying up too late? Didn't you mean to say, "when Manti informed ucla that he was going to play for iwish?"
It is absurd to think that Norm Chow couldn't get Te'o to committ to fUCLA but influenced him away from USC to ND.
There's something wrong with this picture but it is not Norm Chow influencing this young man away from USC. It could be nothing more then the scholarship offer for his friend or it might be something more sinister. We may know in time.
Consider this influence. There is a junior college opening in or near South Bend, and it will field a football team. Word out of Hawai'i is that Brian Te'o, Manti's Dad, will be coaching there. Scott, see if you can do some actual research and find out more about that . . .
That seems very interesting and very plausible as to why ND vs. SC.
Much better than all this "The Monsters are on Maple Street" nonsense about Chow being able to influence Te'o away from SC
Wolfie:
Not true. Don't you believe it. That's probably why they retracted it. I don't know anybody in Bruinland who ever thought Teo was coming to UCLA. ESPN had a reporter at UCLA during recruiting day and he chronicled the coaches activities for the whole day. He quoted Chow saying he thought Teo would go to ND. Here's the link to the story:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=feldman_bruce&id=3886271
I think the story on the Scout ND board regarding the commitment of Roby Toma was more telling. Here is that URL.

Rah Rah's Bite:
There are Rah Rah idiots on both sides. If PC said the same to a recruit who was considering UCLA and another school, you know full well that Murshed Zaheed over at Bruins Nation would have gone into full-metal, bile-spewing mode.
Anyway, can we stop with the silly hearsay? And so what if Chow did say that. Perhaps he said it with a half smile. Maybe he said it in a dark, conspiratorial whisper. Either way, what do you expect him to say: "If you don't want to go to UCLA, please go to our rivals cross town"? Get real.
I think the other issues, like Te'o's best friend not signing at UCLA then being magically offered a scholie at ND, Te'o's father allegedly coaching near South Bend, what, if anything was promised to the family, deserves more attention.
I also read the statement that noted Chow told Te'o not to go to USC.
I don't think it is such a big deal b/c I know other schools use the USC depth chart against USC recruits and state that PC is going to the NFL. I am pretty confident that Te'o knows that Chow and PC are not on speaking terms and maybe took the comment with a grain of salt.
I agree with Desmo that the late ND scholarship to Toma is pretty suspect. But at the same time how can USC act like a victim when Lil' Romeo is on a basketball scholarship under suspect terms.
¡Ay Chihuahua!
Bruin amigos, you got caught with your hand in the cookie jar. We can call it even now that UCLA football is to USC football what USC basketball is to UCLA basketball, verdad?
How lucky you were that Teo got to take his buddy no one else would recruit to ND, though I will admit it would have been funnier to have them both on your team. Maybe you would have been Numero Uno on Shcout!
Why are Barack Obama and Congress not talking about this?? They need to hold sanctions between Carroll and Chow instead of worry about the economy and the Iraq.
This is important crap... like such as, y'know?
HMMM...
AND WHAT WAS USC SAYING ABOUT UCLA???
There is no way Teo would go, or not go, to a certain school because NC said to. Who cares? NC & PC have their ego problems. So what? It's just business.
Bunch of idiots. People it's college recruiting. Anything goes. Te'o chose those sorry ass Irish for his own reasons. Any recruit who chooses another school over SC then to hell with them.
Such paranoia is unbecoming a great program like USC. Carroll has yet again reloaded this year and should be in the national title hunt for the next four years. So what is the big deal about losing Te'o anyway? He has decided to go to a school where he might actually have a chance to play his first year before heading out on his church mission. USC is so deep in talent that it is highly likely he wouldn't have had a chance to play his freshman there. And besides, the kid comes from Punahou, academically the strongest school in Hawaii. Why wouldn't a player who places a strong emphasis on academics opt to go to a school that graduates almost all of its players?
I'll be quite happy if I don't hear another thing about this guy for quite a while. In fact, I hope the next time I hear his name is because Stafon Johnson or Marc Tyler just knocked him on his a$$.
UCLA football recruiting: Did Chow influence Te’o?
by Adam Maya, OC Register
How surprising was it Manti Te’o, the top-ranked linebacker in the nation, chose Notre Dame over USC on signing day?
“I was shocked about Te’o, absolutely floored,” said Greg Biggins, recruiting director for ESPN RISE. “For three years it was either USC or BYU. When he eliminated BYU everyone thought it was a done deal, he was going to USC.”
And then there’s this: While covering the UCLA-USC basketball game Wednesday night, I heard Te’o informed Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow during a recent conversation he wouldn’t be attending UCLA. Someone who said he knew of the exchange said Chow, the recruiter assigned to Te’o and a fellow member of the LDS Church, then supposedly told Te’o that that was fine as long as he didn’t go to USC.
Who knows what influence the alleged conversation could have had on Te’o. Either way, signing day might have heightened USC’s rivalries with both the Bruins and Fighting Irish. What a day.
