Signing Day Benefit

| | Comments (20) |

At least Wednesday's signing date held down the comments over the embarassing loss to UCLA at Pauley Pavilion. Or do people not care anyways?
We heard quite a few boosters expressed their displeasure, however, during the fat-cat recruiting dinner at the Galen Center.

I can't believe that Bruin Language Arts professors take the time to post on this site.

When do you ever get comments about basketball? Besides, it's not like you make it much of a priority on this blog. Your blog prioritizes subject matters as follows: (1) USC football, (2) that one Oregon cheerleader you obsess over, (3) USC Song girls, and THEN (4) USC basketball. Actual, #4 might be SEC football, and #5 might be the premiership, with USC basketball #6. What do you expect?

Glad to here that the boosters are grumbling about Floyd. Not a particularly dynamic personality to be the face of the program.

If we don't make the tourney this year, he'll be gone before the beginning of the 2010 season.

He should be coaching at more established program, or atlower profile school. Be a George Seifert/Tubby Smith type, maintaining what has been established. His Chicago and New Orleans experience shows that he is not a builder.

Funny, but I have heard different viewpoints regarding Tim Floyd's coaching abilities. Some in the know say he is quite good. So I don't know.

I was one of the few Trojans at UGLA the other night, and what stood out was how UGLA's defense disrupted SC so badly that the Trojans could not even get a good look at the basket. It was an embarrassing game for a Trojan, and I sneaked out of the stadium at halftime, not wanting to witness an entire second half of garbage time.

I would like to see how Floyd does with UGLA talent. We have a few boys who could play over there, Taj and the hotshot freshman, but depth is a problem. And I thought with Galen and an experienced coach SC basketball would finally find its niche. But the wait continues.

And don't think there are not diehard SC basketball fans out there. The few times Troy has had good teams, Harold Miner in the 90s, Clancy in the early 2000s, SC has drawn well and the fans were rabid.

We are waiting to one day explode.

It's going to be a long, long wait! It really mystifies me that SC fans don't equally support their basketball team. But one reason is that most Trojan football fans are not SC alums. They are "townies." In fact, by the looks of the hooligans who show up at the Rose Bowl every 2 years, they are Raider fans without a team.

Someone has to fill the Rose Bowl up, bRUIN fans sure don't, unless they have free tickets. ACLU = UCLA

Why talk about basketball when we can talk about what your cousin's mailman's brother said Toma did at his press conference?

I heard from my paperboy's uncle's accountant that, when Burfict chose ASU, he pooped in his SC LOI, wadded it into a ball, and threw it at a life-size cutout of Pete Carroll.

Here's some big news for you ruins:

USC IS A FOOTBALL SCHOOL

A few of us love USC basketball and attend games regularly, and it saddens us to see a half-empty Galen Center. But those hearty Trojan souls like Lawyer John, that dare to follow the team to the Gates of UGLA Hell deserve a Special Commendation. We all know the truth; we have a very long way to go.

It's easy to point a finger at Floyd since he's an eccentric; but he's done a great job keeping his tired 6 - 7 man rotation from breaking apart more often. I've said it before, Floyd knows how to use duct tape, bailing wire and chewing gum like few others. He puts junk on the floor that people laugh at (Romeo, ha, ha), but somehow he manages to win his share.

LJ is correct, give Floyd some players and see what happens. So far Floyd has had two major gets in Mayo and DeRozan, and next years class looks promising. It would be nice if Wolf would mention it at some point.

After our near destruction at the hands of Bibby, Floyd is a huge improvement. He's put our program on the radar to the point that when he's done we'll be able to attract a premier coach.

Blue Bruin, very cute backwards writing. The same comments can be made about your Keystone Cops football team. If you losers think Skippy is going to save you, think again. That ruin Bibby made a mess over here, just remember that Skippy is a Trojan, hahahaha.

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

difference between UCLA football fans and USC basketball fans is that UCLA supports its loser footballers and pushes for improvement while Trojans seem resigned to the fact that they'll never field a BB team worthy of even Wolf's discussion.

Desmo Author Profile Page said:

Ah yes, the old "He's better than Bibby" argument.

Gentlemen, every coach in the Pac-10, Big-10 (and probably Atlantic-10) is better than Henry Bibby. When does that stop being a base-line level for success?

Oh, and the "USC is a Football School." Argument. So were Texas and Oklahoma. Both won conference basketball championships, have have been to final fours in the past decade or so. Hey look, Oklahoma is a top ten team three years after the destruction (NCAA sanctions) of Kelvin Sampson.

USC has not come close to a final four, except for that one year when we were coached by Henry Bibby.

And how exactly has OJ Mayo helped the program? He was one-and-done, and so was last year's team (in the tournament). The Galen Center is still half full. There is no buzz about the program. Just a flat line.

And whose fault is it that year-after-year the team is down to 6-7 players? Lil' Romeo, that junk he put on the floor that makes people laugh? Floyd recruited that junk.

It's amazing how the football program and the basketball program exist in alternate, non-parallel universes. No one can believe that Te'o chose Notre Dame. After all, isn't South Bend a cold, podunk-ey wasteland with little to do and less to offer? Why, it's out in the middle of corn fields, ND must have cheated, I tell ya! Doesn't Te'o understand that USC is a glamorous school, with great weather and beautiful women and beaches and lights and cameras and action and located smack dab in the middle of the Media and Entertainment capital of America, if not the world with alumni connections that span the globe and that if he went here, he'd BE A STAR, BABY! Everyone wants to come here, and if they choose to attend another school, then something must be wrong. Either the school cheated, or the young man was horribly misled by people who should know better. Aw, on second thought, maybe the kid was simply brain damaged and refused to look a gift horse in the mouth. We don't want him anyway. He sucks! FIGHT ON!

But poor Timmy Floyd. He has to recruit for a school no one ever heard of with no history in a terrible location but he's doin' the best he can. I mean, we built this new facility but they still won't come. Maybe it's because the soft-serve machine doesn't work. But we still love the way Timmy walks all hunched over, his wrinkled clothes, his folksy drawl. He's doin' the best he can but it's just so hard to get players to come here to this school no one has ever heard of. I wonder how Timmy would do if he had the same talent that that there other school attracts over there in the big city. Yep, I'd bet that Timmy would do real darn good.

If Floyd had UCLA's talent, he'd finish third in the Pac-10, runner-up in the conference tournament, a seventh seed in the NCAA's, and a loss in the first round. No much different than last year. He wouldn't even match Steve Lavin's success.

UCLA fans: Tim Floyd or Steve Lavin? Death is not an option.

Dear sped, yeah sucla fans support their football team? Yeah that's why their pr department took out an ad in the Fresno papers avertising the game and that's why I was able to purchase tickets to the SC vs. sucla game for $22.00 a piece on stub hub and that is why almost half that crowd at the game made it another SC home game. Support my ass!

silverlake-bruin Author Profile Page said:

Desmo,

He's better than Bibby? What has Floyd accomplished at SUC that Bibby didn't? and remember, Bibby had to sell playing in the sports arena, and Floyd has a new building to sell.

Desmo,

Nice rant, you have officially become a Trojan version of Murshed “Nestor” Zaheed king of the ruinsnation. Keep it up Your Highness! Soon Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams will be duking it out for a chance to take over our legendary hoops empire.

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

I'd take Lavin. He couldn't do anything with the talent he had, but at least he always found plenty of talent. As for supporting UCLA football, I'm guessing I could have found tickets for SC home games on the cheap in the down years before CPC arrived as well. If nothing else, we're not resigned to having one of our two major sports be a loser.

Gnossos Author Profile Page said:

Yeah, in retropect you are probably right spedjones, I was there in those lean years when there were only 50k at the Coliseum and since the Galen center was built I've been one of the faithful few. It would be nice to have the BB team up there with football.

You guys are all wrong. USC has not been to a Final Four since 1954. If we make the tourney this season, it will be the FIRST TIME ever that SC has made 3 consecutive tourney appearances. SC has become a major player in the recruitment of the top blue chip hoops talent. SC has become a recurring threat for the top Pac-10 Team Defense ranking. This despite incredible obstacles.....death of Ryan Francis, high profile transfers before Floyd was hired, critical injuries, adverse NCAA transfer rulings, bad early draft decisions, and unethical NBA runners. Floyd has taken the program to a higher level, and is working hard to reach another level higher. Look at the recruits we have coming, and just wait until next year when we make it 4 straight NCAA tourney appearances. Floyd is the best coach SC has ever had. Be patient, Trojans, be patient. Troy wasn't built in a day.

DFW,

Add the stupid decisions by Gabe Pruitt, Devon Jefferson and even Nick Young. Mayo committed thinking he'd have at least Pruitt on the team, but the idiot just stopped going to class. The death of Ryan Francis was DEVASTATING. What do these whack-job complainers want Floyd to do? Where are Pruitt and Jefferson now?

DFWTrojan Author Profile Page said:

You're right, Loco. True fans should know the underlying dynamics that have held the program back. Yet, Floyd has still made great strides. We have a great recruiting class lined up. I predict big things in 2010, and a cessation of the Floyd complaints. Fight on, Timmy!
