The Curious Case of Te'o (Package Deal Edition)
Last week I did a radio show in Hawaii. One of those who listened was Larry Hilliard, the father of UCLA's incoming freshman tailback, Dalton Hilliard.
Dalton plays for Punahou, the same school as linebacker Manti Te'o and wide receiver Roby Toma. Larry wanted to touch base after my interview and said his son was contacted by UCLA last week following the whole package deal controversy involving Te'o and Toma.
Here is what Hilliard told me:
``Norm Chow gives Dalton a call (last week) and says there's a lot going on with Roby (Toma). Chow said, `Manti said we attacked Roby in regards to Manti not coming.'
``Chow said, `We were aggressive because a deal was struck.'
``Based on what Coach Chow said, Manti called them up and said, `I have a buddy.' He told them if they gave (Toma) a scholarship, he would come. The caveat is he said, `I want to keep it under the table and on signing date I'll make it public.' It's coming from Norm Chow. He did tell Dalton to ease Dalton's mind that they didn't do anything other than offering a friend a scholarship in hopes of Manti's coming to UCLA.''

Interesting set of events. Scott, can you find out what made Manti change his mind to ND instead of UCLA considering that the deal was in place? Second, I know I might sound naive in writing this question but are these type of silent deals the norm and are they allowed by the NCAA? Thanks.
gilligan:
I wondered the same.
Thanks
The only way this version of events makes sense is that if UCLA was the only school to offer the "package" deal. If Teo is as good as everyoone thinks, then USC, ND, and anyone else would have stepped up with a "package."
Was this like the deal that brought Lil' Romeo to USC?
Captain Idiot:
I see that brokenfacemask.com blog was taken down after it was revealed to have been a whole lot of lies and absurd conspiracies. The author of that blog was threatened with numerous lawsuits for libel and he immediately removed everything from that blog and shut it down permanently. That is precisely why he had been banned from USC events. He's a fraud and a liar.
And who does he have to thank for his blog being shut down after two days when it had been online for several years? The idiot captain, of course. It was only because you linked to it dozens of times that people went there and discovered his lies. It was because of you he was threatened with libel lawsuits for his lies. If you had said nothing, his blog would still be up there for everyone to read, lies and all.
Congratulations, you are officially the most stupid person on earth who believes anything on the Internet.
Broken Facemask, R.I.P.
Ha! Ha! Ha! I laugh in the idiot captain's face!
Bernard of the Fools: give it a rest. You're turning into the bigest idiot of them all.
OK, a two fold question.
Did USC offer the same package deal?
And if not, WHY?
PC won't regret not offering this limp wrist and his butt pirate a scholarship.
SC didn't offer because it didn't want to waste a scholarship, especially when Te'o had indicated he would sign with SC.
Jones probably committed to Sc only because Te'o didn't. I like that exchange. JJ is bigger, stronger and a more natural fit at Sc.
Scott should write a book on the Teo recruitment. Every few days it seems another tasty tidbit emerges.
Mrtravlear726 - learn to spell. It makes your argument a bit more compelling if you can spell the most basic English words correctly, especially when calling someone else the biggest idiot.
Get over yourself USC87, ever hear of a typo?
Wow, SW shoots and scores! I guess Chow is the a88hole we knew he was.
so... why is scott so obsessed with te'o? is he going to continue making posts about him during his freshman year at ND and then give weekly updats during his mission? so usc didnt get him, big deal, its not like your team is now going to be one freshman linebacker short of being a good team. isnt there stuff going on with actual usc players that can be written about instead?
UVD you don't know Scott Wolf very well. Yes he will stay on this for another couple of months and then anytime he gets anything new start it all over again.
The more interesting person to follow isn't T'eo but Toma. If he turns into a player it will make USC look silly for not offering a package deal.
This really is a fascinating story. In my opinion, the fact that the UCLA program would offer this type of package isn't near as compelling as what is revealed about Norm Chow.
Everyone knows how strong a desire Chow has to move up in the coaching ranks but I never would have guessed he'd be so aggressive (and no, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with either of those things).
Cross "passive attitude" off the list of reasons people say he wouldn't make a great head coach.
Toma has an excellent chance of becoming a star WR . . . in the fraternity passing league. And if his complexion clears up, he may even be able to date one of the mid-level sorority chicks.
As far as him ever seeing the playing field? Rudy 2 he ain't.
FL
This can't put Dalton Hilliard in good standing with the UCLA coaches.
Maybe Toma can make Te'o his favorite cookies before each game? That's what my girlfriend used to do for me in high school.
Actually, with Chow saying it's "just" the 2-for-1, I wonder what is spinning in the rumor mill. There is serious smoke here Scott.
And I now understand the title of this thread. Just when you think everyone involved was acting like 8 year olds, they turn around and say something that makes you think they're all just shy of 4.
I guess that is why Toma ripped up his UCLA loi after Te'o declared for ND because he wasn't going there anymore. Sure seems like package deal to the Irish as well. Funny thing is a guy like Toma actually help these two programs. Not us, but them. They're that bad.
Wow I wonder how much that scholarship was worth to the Toma family? I guess Scott could ask the Te'o family.
Great reporting, Scotty! A few comments, SC did not offer Toma because SC is too good of a program to pursue package deals. Here's how the chain of events appears to have gone down:
1) WEEKEND - Teo visits SC, tells recruits he is signing with Trojans. Trojans had already declined package deal because, well, this is Linebacker U.
2) TUESDAY - UCLA calls Toma and yells at him for losing Teo.
3) TUESDAY - Toma tells Teo that UCLA dissed him, so they won't both be in LA if Manti goes to SC.
4) TUESDAY - Manti tells Weiss that he'll go to ND if they take Roma.
5) WEDNESDAY morning - Weiss tells Manti and Roma that they have a deal. Weiss tells Roma not sign the UCLA LOI, and he will overnight an ND LOI for Thur delivery.
6) WEDNESDAY - Manti is sad at LOI day, as he had planned to sign with SC. Toma is embarrassed by UCLA, and doesn't have an ND LOI to sign.
7) FRIDAY - Toma signs with ND after receiving his overnight LOI from ND on Thursday to join Manti.
Toma is NOT a division 1 prospect. Neuweaseal and Weiss just sold their ethics down the river to land Manti. Chow did NOT do anything that was not approved by Neuweasel first. USC stays above the fray, and lands stud Jarvis Jones.
I'd sure feel better about SC staying out of this had our basketball coach not wasted a scholarship on Li'l Romeo. Coaches have to demonstrate integrity before they can command it from their players...
Poor Norm, how far you have fallen amigo. From the "greatest offensive mind" in college football to just plain offensive.
Funny reading the SuC fans talk about ethics. Lets see what kind of Reggie Deal you offer Bryce Brown. Any chance his "mentor" ends up with a better la. Cheat on and Cheat Forever!
DFWTrojan, I think you missed (1a):
1a) Te'o asks Song Girl advisors whether Toma could try out for their squad, and is told that Toma is only borderline pretty enough for their new standards.
Shouldn't you guys be spending more time talking about your Song Girls?
"USC stays above the fray"
HA
I just don't get all these ruins on a SC blog. The last thing I would do is go on a fucla website. I guess their's isn't all that interesting.
And if his complexion clears up, he may even be able to date one of the mid-level sorority chicks.
No sororities at ND. He could date a Smick Chick, though.
Oops, the post above was a partial quote. Guess we can't italicize here.
When are these idiots going to realize that if USC actually paid players, guys like Reggie Bush, Dwayne Jarrett and Mark Sanchez wouldn't leave early (especially the latter two who weren't locks for the first round). Yes, it's absolutely in USC's best interest to have players leave early. Idiots.
Brian Dohn has posted a link directly to this post, you can blame him for herding the Bruins over here.
Hey Trojan Conquest, maybe osezno can explain to you why a fan of one team would spend so much time on their rival's blog.
osezno............Wolf has had a link to Dohn's blog for as long as I can remember. This hasn't motivated me to check out this blog on fucla. I guess USC is just alot more interesting than the ruins.
