Malcolm Smith, Chris Galippo and Michael Morgan are solidly holding on to the starting linebacker jobs in spring practice, according to Pete Carroll. That means training camp will likely see Jarvis Jones and Frankie Telfort get extended looks at the outset so that they will be ready to play in some capacity next season.

All three are fast and could get to the ball very, very quickly. With Griffen playing the "Elephant" position, we should be very solid at defense.

Mays and Co. add a very deep threat to the opposing offense. Damn! Our defense kicks a$$! Fight On!

Mr. Wolf, why is M. Simmons never mentioned as a strong contributor this coming season? Are the coaches and fan expectations higher on Telfort and Jones? Thanks.

With Jones backing up Gallippo and Telfort more than likely playing safety at 5'11 200lbs it seems Simmons will have the best chance to upseat Michale Morgan. All 3 were finalists for the Butkus Award.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
