Hey, I know that it could be a bogus story, and that it first reported on a blog no one ever heard of. ESPN, The NFL Network haven't touched it, yet. But it's gone viral now, it's all over these here internets. And it's a story that could cost them millions of dollars. If false, then the peddler of said rumor needs to be exposed. If ture, Clay and Cush and Carroll, as well, have some 'splainin to do. There really is no reason to ignore this story.

There does seem to be this quaint eye elitist idea among journomalists that to even "report" said rumors is to give said rumors instant credibility. That have have seen true, um, like 20 years ago. But today is a different animal. Once a rumor goes viral online and gets into the bloodstream, is gains it's own credibility. Political bloggers and journalists understand this. You might want to refer to Jay Rosen or James Joyner. They actually look at and think about this issue. Also sites like TPM, Andrew Sullivan, and InstaPundit and jornalmalists like Joe Klein and Jake Tapper, to name a few, are invaluable in that they will quickly call-out BS lies and astro-turfed rumors, on line. Political blogs, left and right, are all over this stuff.

I understand you are only a simple-minded sports blogger and that the people I referenced are all pointed-headed and smart and your brain probably doesn't work that fast or that well, but really, how hard is it to understand? To continue to operate under rules established 30 years ago by lazy hacks, there really is no excuse.

I doubt that the passengers came forward because they are accomplices, accessories after the fact, and they are in as much trouble as the driver. I would have gotten out of the car if it had been me. Sounds as if the driver had been drinking and she was afraid she was going to go to jail. The passengers would have skated even if drinking if they had not remained in the vehicle.

And I sadly see that the ol' revenge factor is at work once again. You know, the biblical 'eye for an eye' reaction. This will not restore the life or the health of the victims, and it will not deter the perpetrators inasmuch as it was an accident.

It will however put them behind bars for a long time, and for some reason that will make many people quite happy. These are probably regular kids who in an instant will have had their lives turned inside out. They are victims as well, although I know I hold a minority view.

Lawyer John - I respect and understand your "an eye for an eye soon the whole world is blind" belief but I just can't get over the video of the girl's mother crying. Primitive as it may be, I want something very bad to happen to the driver of the car.

Desmo - This particular thread isn't the place to be picking fights, it is about the death of a teenager. School rivalries are trivial in comparison.

Scott is allegedly a USC reporter, one of the few, full-time, independent reporters covering USC athletics left in Southern California.

A rumor was started yesterday evening that Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews tested positive for steroids. This has serious implications for both players, since steroid rumors have dogged them. The implications could affect their draft status and cost these players millions of dollars, if the rumors were believed.

This morning the rumor went viral. Just about every fan and team site reported the rumor as fact. It even hit Yahoo's Buzz page and The Seattle P-I. It was no longer a rumor but a story to be confirmed or quashed. Use the Google machine if you doubt me.

Meanwhile, Curly posts an Open Forum (which, by the way, is the laziest post in the world), informs us that Joe McKnight is practicing (while snidely mentioning his toes), waits one hour to post and re-iterate what he filed as an article earlier this morning, then more than three hours after the news broke gets around informing us that an arrest was made of the hit and run driver of the USC students. My secretary told me about that when I walked in the door. Yet Scott gets around to posting it three hours later, almost as an after thought, meanwhile two players are having their characters impugned while Scott reports depth charts three days into spring practices, and it takes that Edward R. Murrow of online sports journalism, Ben Malcolmson, to debunk these rumors? Weak sauce.

Can you appreciate the irony, Locoweed? Ben Malcomson, whom Scott regularly trashes, became the point man to debunk an rumor. And he did it recently, at 1:15 pm.

Between 9:40, when Scott posted his lazy Open Fourm, and 10:43, when Scott let us know about Joe McKnight's toes, what the hell was he doing? Was he at practice? OK, fine, but is that is good excuse not to post about the arrest until his lunch break. I'm in Federal Court where they don't allow any cell-phones or blackberries or computers with wireless access and I'm better informed than a full-time beat reporter? Weak sauce.

I'll also make my overall point simple for your simple mind. It is no longer acceptable to ignore viral rumors that concern a reporters' beat. This is half of what high-powered national political reporters do all day. This realization is even spreading to celebrity journalism. But sports journalists in general, and Curly in particular, retain that outdated belief that to acknowledge a rumor is to confirm the rumor. Nothing could be farther from the truth. And it's a huge reason big city dailies, including Scott's employer, are dying.

Meanwhile, it could happen that Cush and Clay's draft stock sinks and Curly posts, albeit a week after the draft "Could it be that Cushing and Matthew's draft stock sank because of the steroid rumors?" with a link to the site that started it all. That would be just like Scott.

You know, this entire sordid affair with the hit-and-runners reminds me of the story line from "Bonfire of the Vanities," the book not the terrible movie, where a rich New York stock broker accidentally runs over a black kid in Harlem and then runs away.

It strikes a nerve in the black community to such a degree that there are public protests and immense pressure placed on the police to find the guy. And they find him, and he goes away for a long time.

If we can change the driving and drinking habits of just one person on this blog, then perhaps this young girl will not have died in vain.

There are about a million arrests for drunk driving every year. These are not criminals or bad people. Heck, they may even be you or me.

But if you are illegal, and only 2 beers can do it, and a child runs in front of you between parked cars where you have no chance to stop in time, you will be spending 10-years in jail.

It is more than a slogan. If you drink, do not drive because you are taking a very very big gamble with the rest of your free life.

If the driver had a record for this, then she should be put away for a long time. I would prefer a public hanging on Trousdale. Mrs. Bachan's press conference was heart wrenching and will stay with me for a while. God bless the reward donors! I think back to the times when I crossed Jefferson late at night after a party on the row...a lot drunk, maybe a little chemically altered. SC should annex Jefferson, gdmnt! Or, put up some kind of barricades at both ends of campus to force the traffic to slow down, like at the border crossing. But, at the end of the day, we are a major university in the heart of one of the world's busiest cities. Crap like this happened in my day, and is unavoidable. But, you can at least limit the potential for tragedy by taking action when glaring deficiencies are exposed.

I wonder if some severe speed bumps could be created along the high traffic areas around USC. I'd donate some money to help build them.

LJ, while we obviously don't agree on a silly thing like allegiances we can certainly agree upon this. Wish there was something that could be done for the families.
