Private School Handicap?
I've heard the excuse in some circles that baseball's struggles are directly due to the fact private schools cannot put together a large roster with the 11.2 scholarship limit. It's obviously a big burden for USC or other private universities.
But a quick check of the top 25 polls shows Rice, TCU, Gonzaga and Elon (Elon!) seem to be doing something right. And USC did make the NCAA Tournament in 15 of Mike Gillespie's 20 seasons.
three of those seasons (03, 04 and 06) were in his last five. that was enough to get him canned and over to irvine where he is opening the first regional the school has hosted in its history. this also means he never went three years in a row without making the tourney. hmmm...
What about Fucla? They are on the dole and still aren't worth a crap.
agreed they're not where they "should" be either, but they have more postseason appearances in the last three years than we do. the scholarship number isn't the problem. (and before anyone brings this up, nor are the admissions standards)

Thought there were 11.7 scholies for baseball or did the ncaa reduce the total by one-half recently. Listen two of you, I supported Obama over McCain/Palin, and also think Garrett is not the smartest of AD's with some of his decision making in hiring coaches during his tenure at USC. Gillespie already the head coach when Garrett arrived so Kreuter the only baseball coach hired by Mike with mediocre results for three seasons. Looks like the both of you are half correct in your assessment. This is not a racial or age related topic.
hey Goo Goo...UCLA finished higher in the standings for baseball than USC....you might want to do some research before you post...but as we know, you will do it anyway even though you look stupid as always....
Retard- I didn't say we were better than Fucla, I said they were dog crap too and they're subsidized. Learn to read so YOU don't look stupid, which is almost impossible.
T5- If you read this blog over time, you will see that the general jist is that if there is a bad hire, i.e. Chad (which was dictated by his father in law), it's Garrett's fault. If there is a great hire, i.e. Pete, it's ALWAYS someone else that got him/her. My point is if you are going to tout Pete, MG gets the credit. If you're going to throw crap 'cause of Chad, it should hit MG. That's all. Most of the posts that complain as I've pointed out above are typically from old jealous farts. And I do think some of it is racial. BTW, both Prez canidates last year were awful. I hope we make it.
You for got Baylor and Vanderbilt as well for private schools that filed good baseball teams. Of course, in Texas college baseball is well attended and pays for itself, plus they split scholarships. Gonzaga and Elon don't have 85 football scholarships.
Goo Goo is the typical lib who plays the race card, fine. Bottom line GOO GOO, Carroll was Garrett's THIRD OR FOURTH choice, he got lucky. He wanted to can Gillespie before his NC, he finally got the chance and look at Gillespie now and look at SC baseball now. Garrett has made a LOT of bad hires and a few good ones, not a great track record.

None of those other private schools exist in the baseball mecca that is southern California with the strong (AND WAY LESS EXPENSIVE) Cal State and UC baseball programs (Fullerton, Long Beach, Irvine, etc.). You've made this point yourself, Wolf.
