Smith's Stock

| | Comments (4) |

I became an immediate fan of Calabasas forward Evan Smith two years ago when his defense gave O.J. Mayo problems during Tim Floyd's basketball camp. He proceeded to commit about 18 months ago but then seemed to disappear from recruiting talk.
One issue was grades but another was USC seemed to have a lot of bigger prospects interested, which pushed him to the backburner. But with Solomon Hill and Renardo Sidney out of the picture, Smith's back to the forefront and he scored 15 points Saturday night in an all-star at Cal State Northridge. He showed he can hit the 3-pointer and also make nice passes.
And he won't be a drama queen, like so many USC players the past two years.

Oh boy!

Wolfie, I've seen Evan Smith play maybe a couple of dozen times. He can't guard on the perimeter, so, let's just say that I doubt the validity of your evaluation concerning his giving Mayo trouble. Because, on top of that, he's a Big West (low DI) player who wasn't coveted by those programs.

He represents depth. If he's playing, it means USC's program is in the toilet. If he's not playing, he'll be out of there because his stressed-out daddy won't be able to handle it.

Kid plays hard, can make a shot, but he's not a Pac 10 level player.

Mo or is it Jeff

You must be a scout the way you talk, so what is your Eval of Derrick Williams?

I like Derrick Williams. Far from a polished offensive player, but, his shot improved a lot over the last two years, he boards, he plays hard, he's a very good athlete, good kid.

I kind of like him as an "under the radar" kid with ability. I think he will eventually be a starter at USC, although my guess is that they took him for depth, thinking of him more as a player who could play both forward positions and kind of a garbage player on offense. However, I think he will just keep getting better, surprise the coaches and out perform his competition.
