Scott, can you comment on Mustain's academic issues? Is he expected to be eligible come fall?

A: He has some work he needs to successfully complete over the summer. There are always players in this situation every summer and they manage to be eligible in the fall.

Scott,

Hi. I am not asking a second question. Just want my first question answered. You missed answering my question, you listed it in Answer Tuesday (Part 2), but you mistakenly forgot to answer it. Please answer it. Thank you.

Here it is:

Is Kevin O'Neil trying to recruit some of the players USC released from their letter of intents for 2009 or is he more focused on recruiting the next recruiting class? Also, can you please tell us how Kevin O'Neil is as a recruiter.

A: I believe he will recruit Derrick Williams and see what he can do there but otherwise he will focus on the high school underclassmen. It will be interesting to see how he handles the situation with Ryan Boatright, the point guard who committed to USC as an eighth grader.
O'Neill developed a reputation as a legendary recruiter at Arizona in the 1980s and he also did a nice job at Marquette and Tennessee. He will work more hours on recruiting than many coaches so he should be able to convince some recruits to come to USC.

Reports today indicate that Mitch Mustain may have academic eligibility issues but there's no official comment on the situation. Any insights?

A: See the top answer.

Mike Garrett: Misunderstood AD or genius beat poet?

Example:

well, in the process
i will go and talk
to people and people
will assert that certain things have happened

some things are accurate
and sometimes they're not
i'd just rather leave that open

because it's always agreed that
when we talk
it stays there

Discuss?

A: College athletics could always use a genius beat poet.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
