It's worth noting that James Grant, executive director of public relations for USC (i.e. President Steven Sample) attended yesterday's press conference for Kevin O'Neill. This comes on the heels of Grant's office handling the resignation announcement of Tim Floyd and also being behind the video statements on the NCAA investigation.
If nothing else, it once again shows Sample is monitoring events and taking a more hands-on role in things.

Sample actually being there would be an indication that he's taking a more hands-on role and that he is showing his support for O'Neil.
