Down to the third choice, Reggie Theus who is being interviewed today by Mike Garrett according to sources. Usually the fourth or fifth on the list works the best with this athletic dept.

Can barely stand listening to Van Gundy on occasional NBA telecasts. Theus would do a good job and has ties to the local high school basketball talent. Smart, good TV presence, plenty of energy and experience ... sounds a lot like Pete, no?

Reggie Theus is the man for the job! One of the original Runnin' Rebs. He used to sport a full length mink coat when he played for the Chicago Bulls! Very stylish, indeed.

Still can't see MG making a relatively inspired choice like Reggie Theus. This is the man who had to be begged by Darryl Gross to interview PC, he hired Paul Hackett and Rick Majerus, gave us the immortal Hangin' Chad Kreuter, and publically considered Jeff van Gundy, a man with the personality of an undetaker.

If Theus were to be hired (which I doubt), it tells me that someone outside the AD is involved in the process.

Desmo,

I have to agree, El Presidente himself has to be on top of this. It's been reported that Theus will take the job if offered, meaning the decision will come down from the Heavens.

Theus has to show a plan to stop the bleeding and demonstrate how basketball will avoid future embarrassment to USC. Whether he can win or not in the immediate future is probably not as important, but long term Reggie is a winner.

Both of you are full of it. You name a few bad apples and leave out all the fine coaches MG has hired. Oh wait, MG only hires the bad ones while a dbag like Gross hires the great ones.....like a Syracuse. Theus won't give the program the profile coach it needs. Another Charlie Parker. BTW, El Prez knows less about hiring a coach than you or I do.

I like Theus! Some are grumbling that he is not a strong game coach. I don't know if that is true or not. Just because they said he had system problems, or a lack thereof, in Sac-town doesn't mean that he will not improve his coaching from that learning experience and become a better game coach. I do believe the recruits will flock to him, and no coach can win without the players.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
