OJ dominated more than any of the others and Reggie was the biggest playmaker but if you're looking for an all-around athlete I'm thinking someone like Troy Polamalu or even Taylor Mays could play on both sides of the ball.

This is one tough call. Garrett, if one can put aside what a putz of a personality the guy is, was a trailmaker, being SC's first Heisman Trophy winner. But he played on mediocre teams.

O.J. was the quintessential sportsman-- big for his time, fast for anytime, and an aesthetic presence when at full gallop. As his coach John McKay once said about O.J. getting the ball 30-40 times per game: "Well, the ball is not heavy, and besides, I like to watch the guy run."

Anthony Davis was a treasure. His 100 yard kickoff returns against Neuter Dame (three in total) were a marvel and probably the greatest thrills I have ever had as a sports spectator. He helped SC win 2 national championships during his tenure. Since he is old, a lot of the present Trojans will not remember him, but he has a legitimate argument to being crowned SC's best.

Marcus Allen was not so much appreciated as O.J. although he was probably the better all-around ballplayer. He was not as pretty. And he was on mediocre teams which did not help his cause.

Reggie Bush was a marvel, a once every 5-years athlete. He could turn the corner so fast that only an NFL defensive back could catch him, and SUCLA and the other colleges did not have such athletes. He won several games that would have been lost. He is a legitimate candidate for SC's greatest athlete.

Palmer was a one-year wonder. So my vote goes to Matt Leinart who won 2 national championships and won a third except for his SC defense letting him down. The guy was probably the greatest college quarterback of alltime. There will never be another Leinart

Marcus Allen. Most complete player. Ever.

The question is about the "best all-time player", not best all-around, not most impactful. Anybody who doesn't know that Anthony Davis was the BEST needs to do a little more research. Garrett, good maybe great, but not the best. OJ and Allen were great - both set the national career rushing marks so high that they stood for many years; but still not the best. Palmer, one hit wonder. Leinart, too good of a supporting cast to know his true value. Bush taught McKnight well how to fumble. Bell, great. But ANTHONY DAVIS had the Heisman stolen from him 2 years in a row by East Coast bias. And he made THE ohio state university pay for that on January 1. Class dismissed!

Class. Class. Class! Now that you're paying attention, I have a research project for the first one who wants extra credit. How many sacks did Tony Boselli allow while at USC?

Wow, can this question really be answered by opinions? I think a case be made for each of the players that were mentioned, and a case can be made for players that were not mentioned. I mean should Richard Wood have been left off of this list? How about Lott, Thurman, Dennis Smith, Swann, Gifford, Yary, Budde and Munoz. The list can go on and on (and does go on).

That's the great thing about USC football and its history. It is not limited to one decade, the span of "GREAT" football players ranges far and long. I dare another university to try and make the same comparison (and that goes for the sisters of very overrated from South Worse, IN). USC football heritage is complete and will stand the test time, the past, the now and continuing on forever.

So my answer is, "I can't answer it", only to say that the best USC football player ever, is one that dons the Cardinal & Gold. Fight On!

The definition of "player" being left to interpretation, USC's best all-time player is:
Marion Mitchell Morrison.
How many Trojan footballers transcend the game like John Wayne? How many are household names? Heck, how many Trojans have an Airport named after them?

I'll go with whomever Tirebiter selects.

Reggie Bush should not be considered, because he did not play his senior year like the other "nominees."

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
