Lon Kruger? That means MG wants USC to lead the NCAA in floor slaps when setting up to play defense.

Kruger was decent at Illinois, but he was also the beginning of the now almost irreversible trend of allowing the top Chicago talent to leave the state (while focusing on the generally overrated Peoria area talent), and he was a joke at Atlanta.

He wasn't horrible at UNLV, but he also doesn't face Pac-10 competition. He's not at the Howland, Montgomery level, not close, and never will be. But he's not that different from Timmy: defense-oriented, offensive and game-day challenged at times, guarantees a third or fourth place conference finish and 20 win seasons, a trip to the NCAA tourney, an occasional sweet sixteen appearance.

He's like the Garrison Keiler of coaches: not too good, not too bad, just above-average.

Seems to me that if USC could get all the second-team All-City players in L.A. every year, Desmo and I could coach the team. The recruiting starts at home.

I think these kids still all dream of playing in the NBA one day, however misplaced those dreams are. Couldn't we make USC the run-and-gun capital of college basketball and recruit some standout student-athletes who make a 2- or 3-year commitment to stay in school, then lead the nation in scoring? Defense does not fill arenas.

Kurt Rambis probably is in line to replace Phil with the Lakers, but he could be a perfect choice, in my opinion. Young, smart, energetic, NBA experience.

Reggie Theus would be fine, too, but no more NCAA old-school re-treads, please!

Should we listen to Wolf with his hearsay "informants" or listen to people who have actually interviewed the applicants?-- On '570' radio they said they talked to Kruger live, something Wolf did not do, and Kruger said he definitely was not offered the SC job.

Also, our guy Reggie Theus had a second interview, Garrett apparently likes him, and would it not be great to have an African-American leading the Trojan charges!?

Well, Lon took Illinois to an elite 8 and Florida to a final 4. But, I agree that he is past his prime. And, I must correct Des. Floyd is an outstanding game day coach - a "coaches" coach - even earning the nickname Timmy the Great from his peers.

Yes, Wolf's MO is to simply pass on rumors posted by others. Sadly, most journalists do that these days. Jamie Dixon did not flat out say NO; rather, negotiations broke down over terms. Kruger may have been contacted, but was never offered. Same with Van Gundy. Reggie or a Laker's assistant is looking like the guy. I vote Reggie.

Gargamel just makes it up as he goes along, especially these days since no one in the basketball office will talk to him. He totally missed the interview with Theus despite reporting every rumor including Coach Ken Reeves being in consideration.

Obviously he wants Seth Greenberg because he is the only one mentioning him for the job every five seconds. Gargamel is going to make as much trouble as he can for USC until they start giving him more info- at which point he will still make as much trouble as he can.
