Oregon, not USC, made the West Coast regional cover for Sports Illustrated's college football preview issue (third cover from the left). Ole Miss, Oklahoma State and Penn State are the other schools that made the cover.
The Trojans are ranked fourth by SI while Taylor Mays and Kris O'Dowd made the All-American team.

Hey charlie, when was the last time the ruins had something to choke about??????

Charlie Bucket Author Profile Page said:

well, UCLA has pretty much been to the Final Four every year, so we have had plenty of chances to choke, Hah! but at least we fought our way into the big time.

whereas USC football always with the consensus "most talent" in the football has continually choked prior to ever making it to the big game, e.g. OR St., UCLA, Stanford....and when they last made it to the big game, talk about choke city...everyone is the country knew Vince Young would run it from 20 yards out and he strolled in....so sweeeet.

Scott,
Its obvious that the SC fans dont care about your blog any more looking at the comment numbers. Stop the LAME Girls loud fan club and come out of the closet and it might turn around for you. Perhaps you could wear one of your soccer jerseys with a number 8 crossed out.

While I would have liked to see O'Dowd and Corp on the left coast cover, it is refreshing to see the Pechanga Fighting Ducks get props. Can't wait to see Amanda Pflugrad's outfit.

Bruin math:
5 times in 30 years = "pretty much been to the Final Four every year"

Charlie Bucket Author Profile Page said:

Telling that a Trojan disputes 4 out of 5 years equates to "pretty much every year" but no one disputes the incessant choking.

I am crossing "torch Trojans on their own blog" off of my Bucket List.

Check off "Live in an imaginary world", too.

Buckethead: make sure you go on a Florida blog so you can cross "torch Gators on their own blog" off as well. While you're at it, hit the Sooners and Longhorns too...if that's what makes you feel like a man.

Maybe UCLA can make the cover of the Daily Breeze this year when they play Long Beach CC.

Funny, I'm still counting Final Four trips in the last five years--but oddly enough, I'm counting zero national championships in that span.

Seems like the very definition of choking to me.

Looks like SI picked good teams not favored to win in their conferences. Nice publicity.

Sam Gilbert Author Profile Page said:

Even a weak publication like Sports Illustrated knows that the Trojans starting QB could change at any given moment this pre-season.

If for some reason Barkley gets the nod over Corp then it's just more proof that print sports media can become outdated before it's even distributed. Another point for the internet.

I agree with Sam, but more importantly, I think his comment allows him to cross "Torch Sports Illustrated" off his bucket list.

Well, it depends on how you define choking. Is it choking when two great football teams play an epic game, with one team emerging victorious by 3 points? Or is it choking when later that year, two basketball teams play for a championship, and it ends up being a blowout? Maybe a team actually has to have a chance of winning in order to be accused of choking.

Damn, I was aiming for all print publications, not just SI. I'm going to have to step up my game.

Gnossos Author Profile Page said:

Buckethead, hope you don't CHOKE against SD State.

On behalf of Coach NeuHassle I am guaranteeing victory over those brash upstarts.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
