Say What?

Based on the post-game comments, Aaron Corp never was officially told he was the starting quarterback. Pretty weird.
Pete Carroll thought about putting Matt Barkley in the game a couple times, including the fourth quarter, but Barkley could not get warmed up and did not bounce back well from yesterday's throwing.

And, we saw why! Corp has a very weak arm. Good Lordy, that was atrocious. As soon as Sanchez declared, it seemed like a 2-loss season. Now, that even seems like pushing things. Road trips to Cal, Notre Dame and Oregon. I'm starting to believe this team has no faith in winning game in the Pacific NW.

Of course he didn't. Corp sucks and he was praying that Barkley would be able to make it.

well well, instead of praying for a miracle MB7 recovery, maybe Chetey Petey should have instilled a little confidence in Corp rather than making it explicitly clear that he was not confident in him.

so corp plays accordingly.

i wont even get into the fact Mustain should have been in there, but Caesar had already written him off.

wow. carroll's infatuation with MB7 blowing up in his face already...

and ChuckBuck validated yet again.

Wolf,

As a devoted reader for the past four years, I can't help but call you on the arrogance and immaturity you have displayed in reporting the Barkley/Corp/Mustain competition. You have alluded to a Carroll driven conspiracy for the past two years. First, Sanchez was on the good graces of Carroll and screwing over Mustain; next, Corp was screwing Mustain; and lastly, Barkley was screwing Corp. Have you ever stopped to think that PC is a far better judge of QB talent than you will ever be. Case in point...Sanchez has displayed leadership qualities for a pro team; Corp utterly choked versus the worst team in the Pac-10; Barkley (the named starter) led a come from behind victory over a top 10 team. Your bias and jealously of Carroll has made you an ineffective reporter and has consumed your blog. I, like many Trojan fans, turn to you for the inside scoop that we unfortunately are not privy too. Centering your blog on unmasking a deep-routed hatred of talent deprives us of that insight. Carroll made the right call this season, tonight's game unequivocally proved that. Should Mustain have entered the game we would have witnessed another flop. You are a great reported when you stick to the facts, please give your readers what they deserve.

I never thought Corp would play so poorly. I had lots of faith in him and didn't think there would be much of a drop off, but geez, his throwing and decision making were horrible. I wonder if he would do better throwing on the run, roll outs, etc.

To uscwho: it's too hard to run the ball when the defense is playing eight men in the box.

mdj: nice post.

keep freeking trying, corp couldnt pass the ball in less he looked @ the guy for three second or more. cant one reciever get open passed 10 yards so help me ronald johnson

Corp was just gawd-awful.

You could see his confidence was completely shot.. underthrowing everybody.. he deserved two more picks than the one interception that actually happened.

Barkley is the guy.

Corp is a backup. Period.

Throwing Corp in there, first game, away with 100,000 opposing fans is like throwing him to the lions. Mustain should have been prepped to be in this situation because ... well he's had real live game experience. Heck even Barkley was given a home game to start. The secondary gave up some critical downs and probably has a lot to do with Mays out. Heres to hoping Florida, Texas, etc lose at least a game.

Corp has played a real game in three years!

Caesar's pulling the rug out from under Corp by stopping competition 9 days before SJSU game when Corp could have competed against Barkley for the starting QB job may have come back to bite Caesar

I am sure Caesar's man crush has played a mind game on Corp ... Corp won the job in the Spring, had it won in the Fall until he got hurt, and "lost" the job before he was ever fully recovered ...

Caesar -- you reap what you sow

I find it hard to blame this all on Corp ... Caesar and staff failed to get the team to deliver once again to an overmatched team.

From the time Corp step foot on campus, his arm was suspect. But Corp's strength is his overall playing ability, not just passing ability. It seems he was quite limited today in what he was allowed to do on the field.

He was not alone in making mistakes.

PC should have known that if he played it as he usually does, Sark and Holt would be ready. This was the perfect opportunity to do some different things with Corp.

The only time Corp seemed allowed to create ended up being the last play from scrimmage. Had Corp escaped one tackle, Trojans win.

Yet, Corp was obviously struggling. Mustain should have been given a shot. What was there to lose?

Would Barkley have saved the day? I doubt it.

The way this QB situation has been handled, no one should be surprised by today's game.

The offense is limited, because the QBs are learning. Well, even then they make mistakes. Just let them go for it all at times.

Yoda, what does USC losing to Washington have to do with UCLA? Geez, if USC didn't lose a game every now and then, you might not have anything to live for.

OK, Song of the Day (SOTD) time... Misery by Soul Asylum. And despite how tempting it might be, no screwing with the chorus to bag on Aaron Corp. He was in a very tough spot. But there is no argument now that MB7 shouldn't be the starter.

Desmo Author Profile Page said:

Yes, it is all Pete Carroll's fault that Aaron Corp cannot see more than five years downfield, can't throw the post or the deep out, panics, has to sit down with Bates and say "I like this play ... this one, too hard ... oooh, swing pass to Havili, I like ... what, throw the ball into a seam in the secondary? No way, amigo!" Yep, lil' Aaron had to sit down with Bates and point out the plays he was comfortable with, and what he wasn't. Weak sauce.

And it's all Pete Carroll's fault for not giving Lil' Aaron the confidence and self-esteem he needs to throw the ball more than five yards downfield.

Now we know why Carroll was waiting till the last second hoping Barkley could play. Corp sucks. It also explains better why Carroll was pissed when Sanchez left. He knew what he had in Corp and Mustain.
