The Underachiever

| | Comments (22) |

New York Daily News sports columnist Mike Lupica called out Pete Carroll on Sunday on ESPN's Sports Reporters show.
"Every year, every year, I think 'SC is going to win (it all)," Lupica said. ``As good as Florida looks, and, by the way, I think Urban Meyer is the best football coach in the world, Carroll is in his ninth year there. His record is 89-15, and I swear they have underachieved.
"I really believe 'SC should have won more national championships than it's won on Pete Carroll's watch."

here is what is actually happening..the SEC/Big 12
bias media keep voting for chokelahoma and another overrated SEC team every year because all the media hacks wen to school on the east coast or at a big 12 school, and shut out USC and then some 98 IQ idiot like this writes
this to get his name in the paper

pretty simple :))

East Coast bias has affected the Trojans' ability to play in the BCS title game (2003 for sure, perhaps 2007, most likely 2008), and then East Coast bias expresses disappointment that USC has not made more title games. "Heads you win, tails I lose"

USC has blown opportunities the past few years.

Texas (2005 season) was evenly matched, but USC lost a 16 point lead. Don't talk about leaving Bush off the field on 4th and 2. Any other play in that situation could have failed. Besides, if Bush doesn't pitch the ball away earlier, USC may not need to make that 4th at 2. It was a hard fought game.

Oregon State (2006) took advantages of turnovers, held off furious rally with tipped 2-pt conversion

UCLA (2006) played inspired defense

Oregon (2007) was evenly matched with Dixon and Stewart (2007), and Sanchez could not lead a comeback

Oregon State (2008) manhandled USC in the first half.

The Stanford game (2007), however, stands alone as Carroll's biggest tactical faux pas by allowing Booty to stay in the game AND pass the ball with a broken finger. (That is the problem with giving one guy all of the snaps at QB. Glad to see that Corp got to play on Saturday.)

However, Lupica forgets that USC is also the only school that has had that opportunity each and every year since 2003 (and was probably the best team at the end of 2002). Even the great Urban Meyer had an off year in 2007.

Looks like USC will be in the hunt again this year. Ohio State can be taken at home. If Texas or Florida slips up, then USC should control its destiny. USC certainly has a difficult schedule that should act as a tie-breaker...unless, there is East Coast bias.

Fight On!

I wonder how long it took Wolf to find this negative story about USC? I am certain he came across many positive quotes he could have put on this blog, but once again he shows his anti-USC bias.

Lupica is a well-respected sports writer. There's some truth to what he says. But the poster "bushwhite" is correct in what he says...SC has been a victim of being left out of the BCS Championship. SC has been more consistent than any other program this decade. Imagine what the "experts" would say if SC lost 4 games, as Florida did two years ago.

I think Lupica's comments are being taken out of context. It's a big time compliment to USC that people think they have underachieved, since then no other team has appeared in (and won) more BCS games than USC.

I agree with uscmike 100%. What's different about the 2009 USC is its swagger and hunger that I did NOT perceive in previous years as stated by Taylor Mays. This team might take USC to the dance...

Texas gave up 20 pts to LM this weekend. Think SC might jump Texas to the number 2 spot?

Lupica is 100% RIGHT. SC hasn't been screwed on anything save for 2003. If "getting screwed" means losing to INFERIOR TEAMS like Oregon State, Stanford and ucla, then SC has gotten screwed. The only thing is, they SCREWED THEMSELVES !!

DUH! WTF do you think Ive been ranting about the past 4 years. Given the resources, its an absolute JOKE that USC has not even been in the BCS title game the past 3 years. Make it 4 in 2009! Of course USC has underachieved and Pete Carroll is not the best coach in the game today. Hes had the best talent in the country, a top academic undergraduate school, in the entertainment capital of the world which offers a highly desireable lifestyle. If Pete cant win with all this at his disposal, then WTF else does he need? How this guy keeps getting a pass from the SC community is mind boggling. And "Win Forver!"? Please. The other thing I love is how the USC rah-rahs will slam Kiffin and Sark at will, yet wont take it a step furthur and ask who put them in those jobs and why.

Lupica is an average, overblown, overhyped newspaper colummist who only gets noticed because is his from New York. The only attention he gets is because he is on a no-name New York-based media show for a East Coast network. All he is trying to do is garner attention to himself by spouting hot air - his best professional accomplishment. Besides think about it - when was the last time a New York City college football program was in the mix for a BCS (or the previous equivalent) football championship? When Vin Scully was at Fordham? Ignore the jerk!!!!

USC Mike is right. It's idiots like Lupica who keep USC out of the BCS game.

I note the usual suspects have once again taken the low road when analyzing SC football 2002-Present.

The fact is SC is the team of the 2000s with Florida in the mix. And SC is the winningest team of the 2000s.

Every year since 2002 SC has been in the running to get into the championship game right up to the last game.

How many teams over the years have gone undefeated? It is very difficult to do.

I will save uscmike's analysis as the best I have seen.

Trojan Conquest Author Profile Page said:

SC has a huge disadvantage that it needs to go undefeated to get to the BcS title game. I really hope SC, Florida, and Texas go undefeated this year. Can you imagine the outrage to the team left out. This could be the final thing that could at least get a plus one.

USC'89 reminds me of the chemical element boron for some reason. He constantly spouts off on the "rah-rahs", yet apparently cfb, to him, is played in Fantasyland. Regardless of recruiting or coaching or schedules, we're still talking about 18-22+ year-olds playing this game. It's ludicrous to assume ANY team can automatically go undefeated year to year. Sure, I would have loved for USC to win more national championships, but I'll take our record since Pete Carroll has been the coach any day and be thankful for it. Get over yourself, dude.

yet only one BCS crystal ball has he won.

simple, the results are to see.

there is no try, there is only do, or do not.

Darth Carroll does not.

these are the remnants of lost opportunities...

never again, like the past 10 years, will usc out recruit all other pac 10 schools so badly - (and outrecruit the sec too)

the best high school players are looking at programs where they can get on the field

every stud is asking himself - will i be the next matt cassel or mitch mustain or cj gable???

the talent will even out - somewhat, and usc will have to prepare for more teams than just oregon and their one big non-conf game

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
