A History Of Caesar
For those new to the blog, USC football is broken into two periods.
2002-2005: Domination was born with national title appearances a common occurrence.
2006-09: No national titles. No title-game appearances. No experienced offensive coordinators.

About Inside USC
Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC
graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for
the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet
message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this
moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in
antagonizing the "Internet geeks."

i.e. Chetey Petey can't win without gangsta Norm Chow.
as usual wolf hits the nail on the head.
UCLA will trade Southern Cal Norm Chow straight up for Bark. that raises a good Q: would Petey trade Bark for Chow if he knew it was his only chance to win another title?? i say no.
i have to agree with you on this. hopefully next year something changes, but i wont be shocked if 'SC loses @ Wazzu next year in pac-10 opener. well if you look at the bright side, USC wont have another boring beatdown in a bowl. also, usc will be at a bcs bowl if they win the rest of the games. and one more thing, the only way the pac-10 gets 2 teams in the bcs is if someone other than USC is the pac-10 champ (refer to 2002)
This has to be the happiest day in Scott Wolf's like in years.
Hey, the drawback of three years of Rivers, Rey, Cush, Maiava and even Sartz -- no decent linebacker recruits. Galippo is average at best, Morgan and Smith got manhandled. Smith, in particular, is a major disappointment, too small to play head on at the point of attack, and if he gains weights, he'll lose the only asset to provides "speed." This is the worst USC linebacker corp since Carroll arrived. SC could really have used Burfict, Te'o and Telford.
Also, Scott, I thought Bates and Seto were upgrades over Sark and Holt. Not so sure about Bates yet, but it's clear Seto is a disaster.
Zoulou:
You got it my man! I said the same thing on an email to a fellow Trojan friend. Last year's team would have NOT allowed Oregon more than twenty points. You are talking about three NFL 1st. rd. LB's and Rey should have been a 1st rounder also. I think you're right about Seto. We used to say the same thing in the Marine Corps Seto made it to sergeant TOO fast for his sake/fate. Take your pick...

What the hell does "no experienced offensive coordinator" have to do with this loss? Seriously Wolf? This was all about a crappy defense. You better be careful Wolf that you get what you want, a lousy SC team. Trust me, if SC is mediocre your hits on this blog will dry up to nothing.
Hey, Zoulou you got it right about the linebackers. The last two years have been down in recruiting them, and Morgan and Smith have speed and nothing else. What has happened to Luther Brown? Norton has to shoulder some of the blame for not selling the better ones to sign with the Trojans lately. Please add Jethro Franklin to the list who was pushed out after one year previously in 2005 and for whatever reason brought back to be the link of giving up lots of points and yardage on defense (FSU / Texas). Three interceptions in eight games is pretty lame on any level.
I agree with the linebacker takes. I live in Arizona and Burfict is being compared to Ray Lewis. And we couldn't offer Te'o's friend a scholarship to land him? I kept wondering how Oregon could break through the line for big runs and starting blaming the D-line. But was it the D-line or the inability of the linebackers to come up and plug the holes. I've never seen so many missed tackles.
Cb:
1) you can't make trades in college FB
2) Chow would never come back to SC something about saving face
3)3-5 0-5 pac-10 still holding on to 13-9
Desmo:
1) go change the oil in your ducati
2) not only LB but secondary has sucked for whole year.
3) not Setos fault PC makes all the calls
4) Tim floyd loves you
Wolf:
1) see you at practice, I will be the one standing over you
Scott,
I applaud your attempts at pointing out the obvious. Problem is there is a great majority of the USC fanbase that will never accept that Pete Carroll is NOT the best coach now or ever, despite how much he underachives given the resources at his disposal. 5 years without a title and 4 years without even an apperance in the BCS title game is a joke.
Pete had it all, the golden goose of football. Then he killed it because of his ego by blowing up the coaching staff between 04 and 05. Pete decided he must get all credit if hes going to take all blame (see NFL career). The great irony/tragedy is that by doing so he essentially made sure he would never win again.
Perhaps this lastest loss will be other boosters to take off their C&G colored glasses and stop giving Pete a pass on failure and start putting so heat on this mofo.
Think PC regrets not landing Burfict and Te'o? Not sure how much a difference they could have made last night but at least it would provide some hope for the future. Morgan and Smith are clearly not capable, Galippo is solid but there is no depth and they were worn out by the middle of the third quarter. The defensive line looked lost and the secondary has been a joke all year. Taylor Mays is the most overrated player in college football. That said, this was bound to happen, you just don't lose that much first round talent and simply reload. I am, however, convinced that Barkley is the real deal now. I'd like to see him be a little more Phillip Rivers type fiery instead of smiling, hat-on-backwards-all-the-time, Tony Romo.
It is ludicrous that you infer that the offense coord. has a responsibility in this loss, which is how I take your post here SW.
The offense was more than adequate and the game was a shootout in the first half. Barkley was keeping his team in the game despite missing Havili, the best possession receiving and blocking FB in the league, McCoy, the primary blocker on most offense plays when he is not the possession target and O'Dowd, an all american quality starting C who's injuries keep him benched, Stafon and Ausberry who's value to the starting offense is obvious, and Williams who was playing with an injury. The stayed in the game until getting down by multiple TD,s and were then forced to rely on passing..where the Ducks by then had their ears pinned back.
The D was once again exposed! A unit that thus far this season has relied simply on their personal athleticism and skills. They were able to dominate against inferior talent early in the schedule but as the opponnent got better, they started showing the now obvious signs of inexperience and lack of depth. When this new starting LB's, and O line were finally put up against a polished, dominating and sophisticated spread offense for this Autzen ass whipping were indeed overmatched this time. I believe that Rocky Seto and Ken Norton, both great teaching technicians, are not strategists. I was dissappointed at the lack of halftime adjustment made wherein the Trojans were unable to defend against that juggernaut. I found it extremely frustrating that this D could not even recognize elementary mis-direction, the LBs could not stay at home to plug holes and cover their elemental zones. The DBs trying to tackle without wrapping up, relying on shoulder bumps and forceouts. A gross exhibition on lack of physicality, especially Taylor Mays who looked tentative and fearful to put his hat on the ball carriers in this game. I also have no explanation for Josh Pink's digression, unless his two injury recoveries have just taken him backwards.
I think that this humbling experience will go a long way in giving this team a future goal, which really leaves me calling for an experienced defense coordinator who can adjust to the newer (non pro set) offenses that are now in vogue.
Charlie Bucket...when is your team, going to at very least, A)Win a conference game, or B) televise their games live?
Scott is right. The offensive system is antiquated and puts too much pressure on the QB. Pro-style offense is better off in the pros. USC had the talent to score 48 against the Ducks. 3 points in the 2nd half and punts on 6 of 11 possessions is what we got. All against a Duck defense full of Frosh and Sophs in the secondary.
Our defense is thin at LB and injury depleted on the interior line. The defense can be fixed with healthy bodies and more experience. However, the offense has woefully underachieved since 2005 relative to our talent level. Hopefully, the Duck offensive explosion was a wake-up call to overhaul the SC offense this offseason.
CONTINUED..
I also agree with The Capitan regarding last years experienced LBs and Rocky Seto's status. That USMC example is so right on!
I also wonder why a blog such as this, where it has been fully established for years now, remains so very slow in posting the comments. The lack of continuity is absurd!
pk-in the mesa(?): i checked with the NCAA and they confirmed the trade could be done if the parties agreed to the deal. so the offer stands...but we both know Petey's man-crush for Bark would stand in the way of the trade. so Southern Cal is doomed and UCLA will start raking in the titles probably starting next year.
now, concerning your childish threat to wolf: it is well established (among men, that is) that a "big threat" over email, phone etc is the most cowardly and impotent move of all. besides mr "ferocious over the electronic device", wolf would hit you with so many lefts, you'll be begging for a right, so don't mess with what you don't understand.
PC's man crush on Barkley has hurt the program. The kid is going to be great but with so many returning starters an amazing OL, they should be scoring more than 20 points against Oregon. You can blame it on the defense but they were on the field all night long. If SC scores a couple TDs to make it closer, the D might be able to step it up and make stops.
PC has played favorites for years and it is coming back to bite him. The always compete moniker is false when guys like Joe McKnight, Barkley, Booty and others are given favorable treatment to the detriment of the team. If Sanchez starts all year in '07, SC wins the title last year (as they should have).
SC is in decline now and their comments about recruits who go elsewhere who "don't want to compete" rings hollow when PC favors the 5 star guys.
USC's Offense is predicated on having outlet receivers who are capable of getting open. Last night both of those guys were NOT playing. No Anthony McCoy and Ayles having a case of the dropsies was the first drawback; Havili on the bench was the second. With neither of those guys in the game, there was no bona fide "clutch" guy for Barkley to throw the ball to in the second half when the pressure was coming. As soon as Alioti confirmed that in the second half, we were done. That, compounded with our refusal to play the short game, which is what Oregon was giving us cost our offense points. I don't think we would have won that game last night with both of those guys in the game, but USC would not have been carved up like a Thanksgiving turkey if they had played.
I am tired of USC losing games because players are injured: Somebody needs to step up and play when a teammate goes down.
Charlie UCLA WILL NEVER EVEN GO TO THE ROSE AGAIN except for regular season home games. Wolf and lefts i don't think so, i happen to grow-up in a gang so i know how to defend myself. 3-5,0-5 nice record fool
