Versus Conference

Here's a picture taken off the telecast of the key play, Mason Foster's interception for a TD, in the Arizona-Washington game on Saturday night.
The Pac-10 video replay official ruled the ball did not touch the ground.
But the play also highlights the awful coverage Fox Sports provides on college football. Here's a link to the key moment. Note how Fox showed the key replay angle only one time and the announcers never question whether the ball hit the ground.

Based on this image it would appear the ball touched the field and Arizona was jobbed.

This is probably good if SC wins out and has a shot at the BcS title game. The loss will look better if Washington has a winning record. By the way, I live in Arizona and they are a bigger threat than ASU. ASU has a good defense (Vontaze Burfict looks great) but their offense is terrible. UofA played undefeated Iowa tough on the road and beat Oregon State on the road. They switched QBs after a few games and Nick Foles looks good. This could be a tough game the last game of the season.

For Pac 10 Wash has to lose a game. This was it. Havinf Ariz with best record at season end would be good for Troy. So this blown call potentially injures USC

Would be good to get Scott's comments on the quality and consistency of officiating on a national basis.

Looked like a huge missed call late in the Notre Dame-UW in favor of the Irish ... but there was also that "roughing the snapper" penalty that could have given the game to the Huskies.

Was watching UW-Arizona game -- and it seemed like the ball could have been on the ground, but there's also that "indisputable evidence" standard. Seems to be (literally) the eye of the beholder.

A bigger scandal is the schedules of programs like Penn State. Great tradition, legendary coach, skilled players ... and a disgrace to all the teams in FBS who do it right.

What the heck gives them the right to schedule eight home games, four non-conference games (all at home!) and Eastern Illinois in week five? Because they can and get away with it.

Washington is a sporadic team with a very poor defense. USC only lost that game because of the conservative play calling with the green QB. Don't worry, the Ducks should beat this team (assuming we have a healthy starting QB ourselves) the week before we play the Trojans, hopefully for all the marbles.

I complain about Scott quite a lot obviously but I think people are going overboard because they want Scott to report only what they want.

I think we can all agree his Girls Aloud stuff is just entirely inappropriate and a waste of time and space for an SC sports blog. Most probably agree that the Song Girls thing can become a bit much, though it is SC related. His work with hoops and baseball tends to be a little intermittent when there is no big scandal.

I'll disagree on some things (and Scott definitely likes to say things that will inflame people.) But news about how poor the Versus and Fox television coverage is or how bad the PAC 10 media deal is is very important. We may not like that we have the worst media deal of all the BCS conferences and the least bowl tie-ins next to the Big East and we don't have our own conference network, etc. And the PAC 10 has a reputation of poor officiating that often bends over backwards (to show a lack of bias) by being anti PAC 10 in games in interconference play, just the way ND seems to get some questionable calls or SEC refs have the rep for protecting their big boys and cheating the ACC in inter-conference games.

We can't forget that perception and business decisions affect perception, wins, recruiting and the ability to compete for national championships.

No, timmay, we don't all agree on that. I, however, agree with me that the incessant nauseating whining over SG/GA posts is lame. Get your own blog and post just SC stuff. See how that works out for you.

I was wondering who was obsessed over the latest Girls Aloud outfit. Someone had to egg Wolf on. Sad.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
