Hmmm

When USC went 0 for 10 on third-down conversions against Washington one argument given to me was that backup Aaron Corp played quarterback in that game. So what's the excuse now that the Trojans went 2 for 13 against Arizona State?

Just a few thoughts:

1. 2 is better than 0.
2. ASU D is beter than UW D.
3. USC beat ASU, which is better than losing to UW.
4. Barkley had some USC TE/WR drops, which is better(?) than UW LB/DB drops.

But both were awful games for the USC offense. I think we all expect that USC should be further along offensively than they are now. At this point in the season, the only two options are to change something, or give it more time. I, for one, don't think throwing Corp back in there is the answer. It's time for USC to put their best players out there and fight on!

Seeing as Anthony McCoy AND Stanley Havili (being that the TE and FB have always been integral parts of the USC offense) were both out, was it any surprise that Barkley had 0 reliable targets outside of Ronald Johnson and Damian Williams (who also dropped a pass Barkley put right on the numbers)?
Wolf, whatever you're trying to prove about Barkley isn't working. He went 7/22 against ASU, but it should've been 12/22. Damian, Ayles, Rhett Ellison... all dropped passes yesterday.
You've covered USC football for how long? Shouldn't you know by now who and what to blame for stuff like this?

There is no excuse. I love reading all of the lame excuses given for Barkley's equally lame performances. Plural. Both he and Corp are a work in progress and we need to have faith in Mr. Carroll's choice. I guess. Maybe, hopefully, it'll pay off in 2011. Maybe even 2010. For this year we're screwed. Thus far, at best, Barkley is a disaster.

Overreact much?

Disasters don't go 7-1 as a starter.

That said, Jeremy Bates is the most unimaginative play caller in college football. Reminds me of the Karl Dorrell offenses.

I guess there was a reason why, when Shanahan was fired and his staff were let go, NFL teams weren't beating down Bates' door to give him an offer.

So much for Bates being an upgrade over Sark. Like most of his rankings, Wolf was wrong again.

Barney, you are much better as a cartoon character than a football blogger. My grandchildren love you...but Matt's 6-1 is a disaster?

6-1 is not a disaster.

But the way we've went 6-1 is disappointing. I doubt anyone will say they are happy with the Trojans offensive performance this year.

Yes, give Barkely some kudos. He's done well as a developing freshman QB.

Yet, being honest, in spite of dropped passes and penalties and poor play-calling, we should be scoring more often. We have a lot of playmakers.

Could it be that Barkley's relative inexperience is also a factor in our offensive sluggishness? I think so.

Don't blame it all on Barkley. USC hasn't had a top 10 offense since 2005, despite having top 10 offensive talent. The offensive playbook needs an overhaul. As usual, the QB takes the blame. This blame should be on PC for pushing out Chow and then throwing out his west coast passing game offense. It's been downhill ever since.

ASU has a terrific defensive line. MB7 was not getting the time he has been getting earlier in the season. And we now know that he is unable to throw in a hurry. Having said that, the penalties and the drops don't help!

Gotta stop doing this. If my therapist finds out I'm talking to you guys again it's gonna get ugly and the meds will really get expensive. So I thought about it. Is disaster over-reacting? Is it too strong? Maybe. But, maybe not. I do not blame Barkeley for all that has gone wrong and I sure as hell don't give him much credit for the 7-2 record which, in my humble opinion, has occurred in spite of him. He's a kid, and hopefully will justify Carroll's faith in him someday. But when I see him continue to do the same stuff he did in high school, making bad decisions and throwing into coverages he has no business even trying, the shovel passes when he's going down...He was only charged with one int in the ASU game but he threw 3: one cancelled by a penalty and one bounced all over the hands of a db before it hit the ground. The ND game got close not because of the defense but because of Barkley's interception which some of you like to think was because it was tipped. Tipped? Is that because he was throwing to Johnson and missed him, like he misses so many open receivers, or because he was trying to get it further up field in between 3 ND guys but they didn't drop that one. He has a mighty arm and could probably throw it through a wall except he would probably miss the wall. He is not only not the best freshman qb in the country, hell, he's not even the best freshman qb in LA. Trust me on this one: the UCLA secondary will not miss the team bus to the Coliseum on 12/5. They are wetting their pants looking forward to facing this guy. Oh, oh. Here comes my therapist.
