Herman Edwards remains a candidate, which is also something to be concerned about.

Has John Robinson been contacted yet?
The list is quickly shrinking. Del Rio, Walker, not available. Herm Edwards is not someone I think would carry on the flame. Looks like SC will be stuck with another Hackett or Smith. Maybe they need to take a chance on an unknown. Oh well.....
Mariucci? http://www.ocregister.com/sports/usc-228676-carroll-search.html
I'd be pissed if it is Herm Edwards. What is Ted Tolner doing these days?
Can we say the '90s again? What a joke. Screw you USC Athletic Department!
Herm Edwards wouldn't be horrible. Especially if he was able to lure Norm Chow and Coach O back to SC. I think he'd be dynamite talking to recruits and their parents and his energy would match or exceed Pete's. I'm just not sure about his clock management and in-game decision making. If he could find someone with the ability to help him out with that, Edwards could work.
I'll say it now, Herm Edwards at USC would either be a Grand Slam or a colossal failure. There probably wouldn't be any in between.
FIGHT ON!
sureshot is spot on. Edwards would be a dynamo in recruiting.
I am at a point now - especially since it appears the coaches from Utah, Boise State, TCU, and BYU are apparently not being considered - that I am more concerned with the assistants we get than the actual head coach. In my mind, as long as we get Chow and Orgeron as assistants, I think I would be OK with almost anyone as the head coach. We are in a corner and it may be a better plan to focus on the guys who are going to call the plays and do the recruting even more than the guy who is the figurehead.
From WIKI about Herm Edwards...
Herman Edwards' performance as a coach has drawn a variety of criticisms.
Teams coached by Edwards have typically started most seasons with poor performances, leading to speculation that Edwards does a poor job of preparation in the preseason. [6] Additionally, Edwards' record on opening day of the NFL season is 2-6, and his teams have been outscored 203-135 (including 87-30 in the last 4 season openers, all losses) in these games. Ironically, the last season opening game that Edwards' current team, the Chiefs, managed to win was against him—when he was still coach of the New York Jets.
It has also been speculated that Edwards' lack of conditioning in practice has had a poor effect on his teams, In 2008, the Chiefs lost an array of games in the fourth quarter after blowing a lead or falling behind in a tie.
Edwards has been criticized for a number of perceived clock management gaffes.[9][10][11][12]
Edwards' game plans have often been criticized as too conservative with little or no imagination.[13] A prime example of Edwards' game plans, the lone Chiefs 2006 playoff game was one of the worst offensive performances in recent history.[14][15][1
Tolner is the Passing Game Coordinator for the Oakland Raiders and Paul Hackett it the QB's coach.
Why don't we hire them both? Package deal.
Brett: I wonder what WIKI (now that's a source!) would've said about one Pete Carroll after his last NFL experience.
I try to remember my response after they hired Carroll. I thought it was a terrible move and I thought ASU got a better coach with Dirk Koetter. I agree Edwards has the personality to fit at a college program. Recruiting and getting the right assistants is everything at SC. Unfortunately Carroll forgot about the hiring the right assistants of late.
The comparison of anybody now rumored for the job to Carroll when he was hired is blatantly ridiculous. The bar is set so high now that it requires a completely different individual to succeed at today's SC, especially with what is looming. A pro coach is a bad hire, as far as I see it. Wittingham at Utah would be the best choice in my eyes, but if Garrett is making the call, he's sure to scrwew it up.
Herm Edwards would be a disaster.
No way would Herm Edwards get Norm Chow to coach back at USC. He is already in progress of a turn around project, why would he want to start from scratch on another one.
qualifications: you play to win the game
um...next?
KillaKick...Chow would come to USC to develop Matt Barkley. Although I don't believe that Chow will come SC, that's clearly the reason he would come...further cementing his QB guru legacy
I think I'd rather have that Ucla assistant than Herm Edwards. gotta love his quotes though...
Gnossos....ROTF.."Tollner/Hackett"..you crack me up! lol
