Remember Dennis Erickson wanted to go to the NFL and accepted a job with the Seattle Seahawks too.

The facts are just so strong against the decision..... Oh wait nevermind that was Carroll on Sanchez going pro, not Carroll on Carroll going pro.

If he does go, me thinks the (NCAA) hammer is about to come down on SC football.

Erickson can't even properly coach the Sun Devils, so why would any pro team want to hire him?!

Trojans athletic director Mike Garrett is known to think very highly of Walker, and his candidacy would be given a boost by the fact he's a very strong recruiter and would represent the first African-American head coach in USC's history.

Chow is also seen as a potential coordinator hire in Seattle for Carroll, or for Walker, should he replace Carroll at USC.

Just finished quickly reading all the comments about Pete's apparently imminent leaving, and these are my thoughts:

1. How predictable that all the SUCLA cockroaches came scurrying out of their little holes to jump all over the SC meat on the table; hey, if you can't beat your competition then the next best thing for SUCLA is to belittle them.

2. It was probably time for Pete to leave. He was catching a lot of criticism for how he handled this year's team, and he is approaching 60 years old, not a lot of gas left in the tank, so why not try to patch up the one black mark on his resume, his pro coaching record.

3. SC football won 9 national championships before Pete, and 2 with him. There will be more championships won because SC football is, well, SC football. Kids want to play for a winner and SC is all of that.

4. 9 years at a place may have been enough, especially in the coaching profession. Pete's schtick may have become a little old with everybody. A new coach and a new philosophy might bring added excitement to the program.

5. Still, I feel depressed this evening. He was an SC legend and will go down in history as one.

DeWayne Walker could be the Next USC Head Coach- SI.com reports
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl /01/08/seahawks.carroll/index.html?eref=sihp

from the article

Carroll's interest in the Seattle job is very high, said the NFL source, and if he returns to the NFL, it could have intriguing ramifications around the college football coaching job market. For one, Carroll is thought to be interested in adding former USC and UCLA assistant DeWayne Walker to his potential Seattle staff as defensive coordinator. Walker, who just finished his first season as New Mexico State's head coach, is a former New York Giants assistant who served on Carroll's staff in his early years at USC, and later was Karl Dorrell's successful defensive coordinator at UCLA.

But the possibility also exists that Walker would be a strong candidate to replace Carroll at USC. Trojans athletic director Mike Garrett is known to think very highly of Walker, and his candidacy would be given a boost by the fact he's a very strong recruiter and would represent the first African-American head coach in USC's history.

Walker was also instrumental in bringing Norm Chow to Carroll's attention at USC, where he served as Carroll's offensive coordinator on many of the Trojans' most successful teams last decade. After a three-year stint as the Titans offensive coordinator in the NFL, Chow returned to the college ranks two years ago, as UCLA's offensive coordinator. Though there was some tension between Carroll and Chow toward the end of their time together, Chow is also seen as a potential coordinator hire in Seattle for Carroll, or for Walker, should he replace Carroll at USC.

Well said, Lawyer John.

I'm sorry to see Carroll go, but I think a change might be best for all involved. Given all the brutal assaults form the LA media (some of which Carroll brought on himself), I wasn't looking forward to another fewer-than-12-win season. There was too much negativity hanging over the program, and it wasn't good for the players or the coaches. A fresh start will be nice.

And it makes me all the happier that he got a chance to bomb those f*ckers at UCLA one last time before he left. Fight On, Pete.

While change is in the offing, maybe Garret could leave also, bring back Daryl Gross.

I agree with everything LJ and JAG said. I just hope whoever the next HC is hires a proven QB coach, we are going to need one in that area next year.
