About Inside USC
Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC
graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for
the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet
message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this
moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in
antagonizing the "Internet geeks."

wolf, this is your finest hour, once again you scooped the legion of sportshound journalists scouring this case...as i recall, the protocol for resigning at Southern Cal is to do it via fax or voicemail, correct?
well that's that. time to move on. i hope MG was waiting for it to become official before announcing the search. Now that it's official, no excuses for any time he spends lagging
even though i'm not a huge fan of how he's leaving the program, thanks to Pete for all he's done for the SC program. I never imagined when he got hired that we'd see the successes we've seen over the past few years. Here's hoping the next coach keeps it rolling
Bye Pete good riddance. Do be surprised if the scum bag resurfaces like nick saban did once he lays an egg in the NFL. Let's see how competition tues and will farrell appearances go over with millionaires.
Unfortunately most fans do not realize this is the football program's darkest hour.
What is coming down the NCAA pipeline will make the new coaching vacancy a hard sell.
I was reminded today that USC was under probation from academic fraud stemming from 2001. Therefore, the Bush situation took place within those 5 years of probation.
Doesnt look good for the future.
Carroll gave us short term profits, and long term losses.
Also, hell will freeze over if Garrett is still on the job when the school hires a new president.
Can't wait for Petey's press conference. I love hollow compliments and wistful rememberances. I hope Seattle doesn't think they are getting a guy who will outcoach the guy on the other sideline. He will coin some mean catch-phrases though! I hope Houshmanzadeh likes their motto for next year, "9 wins is good, right?".
i do think he'll be back in college within a few years. Rah rah messages and competing for playing time just don't appeal to guys with contracts for millions
soon he'll remember why he preferred the college game. If you think this is tough, try seeing Pete as the head coach of another college football team. that's gonna kill me

wow, reality has set in Norm Chow, Ed Orgeron, Kennedy Pola, and Jack Del Rio! What more can we ask for. Now that Pete Carroll is running we can call it for what it is folks. This past season Pete Carroll was exposed. He was just the p/r guy the assistants were the backbone and we he lost all of them he was exposed. He is not leaving for no other reason other than to hide the fact that his assistants ran the program not him. Sure he is a nice guy, but lets be realistic the assistants ran the winning teams not Pete. I started USC when Robinson was finishing his first run and guess what we were on probation. I have seen the worst from Robinsons successor to Smith to Hackett! I love my Trojans and could not ask for more than to have Norm Chow, Kennedy Pola, Ed Orgeron and Jack Del Rio. Asking for Mike Leach would be reaching! Fight On and stick with us recruits, Your a Trojan For Life!
TommyT1973 - "Carroll gave us short term profits, and long term losses."
Just like any "good" CEO, COO, CFO of corporate america
Just think..... Colorado and Washington post Rick Neuheisel times ten.
Also Kentucky in 2000 and Alabama in the early 90s are other examples
We'll be down at least 15 scholarships per year.
The ending of this saga is only beginning.
Scott, I'd like to see a list of candidates that you think are willing to deal with the unknown with potential discipline from the NCAA.
For example: Riley, Del Rio, Leach, Sarkisian etc.
Any of them tough enough to take on the NCAA penalties?
(all ESPN candidates)
I don't think the (possible, not probable) NCAA sanctions are enough to scare away a coach. If anything, a loss of several scholarships and loss of recruiting days just puts you on a level playing field with the rest of the Pac-10, for the most part. Still, those penalties will be short-term, and, unlike basketball at USC, the USC football job is still one of the best in the country, even on probation or with a few penalties.
That said, it seems like a person without a current job is a more likely candidate, no? Someone might not leave a cozy spot for the uncertainties of USC?
Why would Riley and Fisher leave their comfort zone to deal with potential NCAA sanctions? If Sark and Kiffin had inside knowledge of Bush-gate, they would never return to USC. That only leaves Del Rio, if he gets fired, or Leach. Hope USC's electrical room has more upgrades than Texas Tech's.
Thanks for a great decade Pete! Thanks for giving my grandfather the memory of the 2005 Rose Bowl. Good luck in Seattle. I know we will miss you.
Mr. Wolf, do you have any idea when MG is going to announce the new football coach or is he going to wait after signing day? Do you know who is the actual front runner for the job considering that they have had a few days to contact some possible replacements? Thank you in advance.
the bitterness here is like a second grade class of schoolgirls who lost their young pretty teacher. get over it move on. to pete i say thanks for getting sc back on the map and for a magical run.
as for last year, read into this comment from marc tyler what you will, but to me it is HIGHLY telling..
"I think he was a coach who kind of had his favorites and stuck with those people," Tyler said. "We'll see who comes in and who has a fresh start."
SW,
I disagree with your equal salaries. How about 2 Mill for HC, 1.5 for coordinators. This is all within PC's salary of 5 Mill. Three dynamite coaches for Petey's salary. DW's resume is impressive for a young coach. This is an opportunity for USC to get a NFL Head Ccoaching prospect. DW's next stop is a major college HC before going on to be an NFL HC. We may as well get this guy on the cheap, get five years of service, get the ship righted from the probationary issues, and come out with some championship teams. For those that don't know about DW, he is a hometown kid. Google DeWayne Walker and see for yourself his growth and projectory. This guy is the real deal. This is probably USC's only opportunity to get both NC and OE back in the fold.
Win forever, Pete. Thanks for the memories. Greatest coach in USC football history!
What's happening with Mike Garrett? I hear he's on his way out. I'm hoping for a Del Rio/Pola/Carrier reunion at USC. I think Walker needs some more experience to take on the program.
USC did pretty well under Peter Carroll. While I think he clearly bent a lot of rules to achieve what he did on the field, there is no denying that he put USC back on the map again -- truly, making USC more than just a university on the wrong side of the tracks barely better than your average community college.
While I think that it will take a bit for USC to recover from the pending sanctions it will be comforting to know that Heisman Mike Garrett will be building this program back up again very, very soon.
Fight On BROs!
Best wishes Pete. Thanks for the service and contribution to Trojan Lore.
ok goodbye and goodluck! There I said it, but lets be realistic it was not Pete but his coordinators that made him great. Yeah Yeah he was a nice guy, enough already, John McKay and Marv Goux were great coaches and they loved USC. I am a proud alum and was here for the first round of sanctions back in the late 80's and I'll be here if it happens again. Lets not run our lives on fear the ncaa has to have the facts and the paperwork and proper information before the infractions committee can act. Lets not panic and lets hope that Mike Garrett can bring in a team like J/D,E/O, and N/O. Fight On!
Now we wait and see what will happen, regardless of the choice, like true Trojans lets make sure we back whomever the choice may be. I love USC and support them win or lose, as any good alum should.
I just find it quite interesting that the press has placed so much interest in USC, when the eyes should be focused on some programs in the SEC and the Big 12
What's the story with DeWayne Walker? He would bring a kick-butt attitude back to the D and he could out-recruit anyone in LA.
Del Rio, Chow, Orgeron. Make it happen.
The CANCER IS OUT. so is the farce that was a better LA. MArk my words dePlETE is the next Spurrier.
Everyone keeps talking about possible sanctions, but I don't see it. At least not anything major. Maybe you guys (not Ruin fans or flamers, just SC fans with clear heads) can fill me in on this, but my take is that worst case scenario, Reggie Bush's parents got some free rent from a perspective agent and Joe McFumble was riding around in a car not purchased by him. Nowhere in the list of possible infractions do I read anything about coach or booster misdoing nor about blatant lack of control by the administration. (and don't give that BS about "lack of institutional control" because that list does even come close to reaching that level)
Any coach who would be scared off from a possible slap on the wrist from the NCAA would have to be insane. USC proved over the last decade that it is able to rebound to the highest heights in no time. There are only a half dozen programs in the county that can claim the storied history and prestige that USC can.
Bottom line: this is one of the best 4 jobs in the country.
LOL @ sureshot ... ostrich your favorite bird? The hammer will fall and it will feel as if the mighty THOR himself has descended upon Heritage Hall. I have some VERY well-connected buddies and they have told me that they know that what's heading down the pipeline is even stronger than Dr. Ting's muscle-juice. The sanctions may be bigger than Cushing's breasts before he got in the "weight room" and, while I agree that we should be able to re-build and again claw our way back to national prominence, we are in for a couple of very lean years once the NCAA Ban-hammer falls.
TommyT1973 - "Carroll gave us short term profits, and long term losses."
ARE YOU KIDDING! Carroll brought two national championships and won the pac 10 almost every year he was there. You guys should be kissing Carroll's a*s. I didn't know that USC fans were so stupidly retarded. GO HUSKIES AND GO SEAHAWKS!!!
A sad day. Anyone now trashing Pete Carroll or expressing ingratitude is being classless and having a very short memory - Pete brought our program back from the black days of losing to Fresno State in the Freedom Bowl. We're sad to see him go, and grateful to him for restoring USC's luster. As for NCAA violations and other rumors, so far they're just that...and if they come to pass then we'll see what role if any Pete Carroll had in them. He can hardly be held responsible for decisions made by his players that were unbeknownst to him. I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt on this. I wish him well in his future endeavors, and who knows, one day we may see Pete in Trojan colors again, stranger things have happened around SC.
Okay, woah, this is crazy-talk maybe but ... I just had this sickening thought ... what if Pete came back in a couple of years after his predictable failure to pom-pom his way to NFL greatness and coached across town? Oh my god would that be sickening or what, Pete Carroll, coach of the UCLA Bruins? Oh please shoot me.
I'm sure MG knew this was coming at least weeks ago. I'm sure he already has a list in order 1-10. Just a matter of how far down the list he has to go to find someone to accept the job.
Never doubted that at some point given the right situation Pete would bolt to the NFL. I dont like the way he is going about it but I feel it is more of a payback towards MG.
I liked Pete but not as much the last couple years. Didnt like the way he handled the Sanchez situation. Started to see that the competition thing was just lip service. He seemed to have his favorites and his dog house.
He was being outcoached by half the Pac 10 coaches with 4 times the talent. It was time for Pete to move on. Another season like this past one and the heat would have turned to fire.
We as Trojan fans just have to hope the wrong coaches on the list turn the job down and the right one accepts.
SacWolf, you named exactly zero transgressions. Zero.
You've got to come with something stronger than that.
While Provost C. L. Max Nikias will become the new President of the university in the fairly near future, it will be an interim appointment, leaving the school several years to find the one it really wants for the next 20 years.
Mike Garrett will be asked to step down, joining Pete, Joe McKnight, O. J. Mayo, Reggie Bush, etal in being outside the University system, so when the NCAA wants to come calling, there is no one to interview, so it will have to make decisions based on what it knows now, not what it might find out.
A new A.D., a new coach from outside the university at this point in time, and the school gets off the hook as best as it can, meaning no more than 2 years, maybe less.
Thus those names not on the roster today stand a better chance to come in and change the culture of administrative nonsense that has characterized the past 5 or so years. But it will still require someone willing to wait for that period to elapse before the school can really return to its past pinnacle.
You may not remember but I called the Kelly appointment at ND before anyone thought it possible.
I am not naming names on this one, but know many that it will NOT be.
Well, congratulations, Scott. You have succeeded in your never-ending quest to run Pete Carroll out of USC.
Know that I will personally continue my attacks on you with all that I have every day. You are just an evil little SOB.
Fight On!
Coach Carroll: "Thanks for the memories...."
Look sureshot, I truly applaud your wishful denial of reality. We all have refused to accept the inevitable before. I mean, even me ... I'd like to have a 9-incher and boatloads of bling so I could rock it like Tim Floyd refereeing a heavyweight ladyfight at the Casino Morongo .. but, back in the real world, I'll tell you that there is one major reason that it's taking SO LONG for NCAA to make penalties known ... and it's not becuz they're planning how lightly to slap us on the wrist. The time to present a VERY COMPELLING case of Lack of IC to the infractions committee that's meeting in February with the VERY REAL possiblity of stripping post-season play for 2-4 years AND 15 scholies for that same period of time. Conventional wisdom is that they come down on the heavy side (e.g at least 3 years) - as they've already denied our OWN request to self-impose sanctions that woulda been 2 yrs and scholies ( 5 to 10 though ). So we can assume it's AT LEAST, BARE MINIMUM, worse than 2 years of post-season ban and more than 5-10 scholies per year.
Let me school you trojans walking around with blinders on because nobody believes your distinction for Bu$h or Payo getting paid by an agent rather than a booster.
It is a false distinction. Let's see if you can follow: Boosters giving players money = improper because it would tend to benefit teams that can pay their players and is unethical because these are still "student athletes." So remember that equation, improper = benefit or B(ooster)->P(layer) = improper benefit to university.
Now, let's say I know the rules. Let's say I'm an agent giving players money. In and of itself, this is unethical but when the university allows this to happen it accomplishes the same transaction. Instead of some booster you have an agent giving players money. Boosters, like agents, are not officials of the university, they just have more interest in the school. An agent does not have this interest but the effect of giving players benefits is still the same improper = benefit to the university. So if the school allows agents to roam the sidelines and turns a blind eye to what is going on, then their players are benefited (and therefore themselves) and they can hide behind the false agent doesn't equal booster excuse.
So you would want us all to believe that we are not to notice a possible end-around being done to skirt NCAA rules? What you are suggesting is exactly that. I could set up a proxy and feed him money who would then give the benefit to the player like McSUV. B->M(oney-man proxy)->P. Two degrees of separation makes this okay right? Even though the distinction is really illusionary.
So keep walking through life with blinders on $c fans because it is funny to watch all the denial.
SacWolf, I believe the NCAA has been taking so long because they don't have any concrete evidence of wrong doing. The whole Reggie Bush fiasco has been held up with side deals and closed door meetings and I really don't see anything else. I think at the very least, reasons for severe sanctions would have leaked to the media by now. I always have ears open for "word on the street" and I haven't read a single thing that leads me to believe sanctions will be strict (if at all).
So, if you really do have great connections within the administration, please tell what specific violations you've heard of. Because the Bush and McFumble allegations (even if 100% true) don't come close to lack of institutional control. Seriously, give me specifics - even if it's just hearsay.
Wow, university of spoiled children, you really are some ungrateful sods. I really am going to enjoy watching you suck for a long, long time.
Everyone that really believes USC doesnt have anything coming down from the NCAA pipeline is truly blind.
Pete left because the NCAA denied satisfaction in a USC self-imposed restriction against the football program.
For simple starters, the Bush agents were registered with the compliance department and given access to the program. Reggie also had an internship with them over the summer. Coaches are SUPPOSED to eliminate those conflicts of interest. Whether or not Carroll turned a blind eye is irrelevant. Its lack of control over a program. That is of course the major head line story.
There is also the spanish class at the community college. That would be a minor story, but part of a major case to be made.
Jarrett's living arrangements with Leinart.
Multiple on campus and off campus police investigations into fights.
The Ting brothers and steroids.
We are just getting started with those very simple publicly known incidents.
Compare what is publicly known to the cases of Alabama, Kentucky, Florida St, Colorado and Washington. USC is in a deeper pile of crap than any of those schools were ever in. The NCAA significantly lowered their scholarship limits, TV appearances and bowl participation.
Take off the blinders. It was fun while it lasted.
Through thick and thin - Fight On!
SURESHOT: here are two semi-specifics that I feel I can provide w/o compromising my sources. 1: the 2004 Bush internship deal was signed off on by HH folks and was directly related to (some) of the improper benefits received by Bush and family. This seems like nothing to us as RABID USC FANS, but, is actually a huge deal to the NCAA. It presents de facto implicitification of institutional sanctioning. 2: Mayo has allegedly told several of his "running mates", including a guy named Rodney "Gee", that he's already spoken to NCAA. This is becoming increasingly well known, yet was NOT PUBLIC information until about 1 week ago. Mayo talking to the NCAA, which allegedly/apparently took place over 2 days in late December, seems to coincide almost perfectly with the leaking of punitive "suggestions" from NCAA and their refusal to accept USC's own proposal of self-imposed sanctions against FB team.
so what makes the seahawks think he can coach???
pete is really just a great recruiter with some snappy quotes - but none of that applies to the pro game
pete will no longer get to choose his players - he will have to play other teams with more talent - something he never had to do at usc
seahawks sacked their "coach of the future" after just one season
i wonder how much of lifeline pete will get up there if they dont win???
I'm still not buying significant sanctions, but if true, Pete's legacy at SC will be nill and Mike Garrett should have been fired years ago.
Seriously, I don't care if SC is getting a new President soon, after the way MG has handled this situation, Dr. Sample should hand him his walking papers in the morning.
Through it all, Fight On!
sureshot is the grad student Weis was referring to. Wake up sureshot! He ain't coming back! By the way, are you Jill Painter, sureshot?
@Ruins102NCAAmostlyingirlssports
Excellent presentation, I assume you went to the University of Sam Gilbert in Pacific Palisades, CA.
sureshot - you do realize that USC was already under probation starting in 2001 and stretching five years right?
that simple fact only magnifies the repercussions we must endure.
Trojan fans will need to endure some lean years. The Coliseum will be half empty as the front runners of the Carroll era will head back to the beach.
Fight On!
MG has to go
I think that all of us DIEHARD TROJANS can agree that we've really had some great times for the last few years. Some of us knew how we were doing it and were fine w/ turning a blind eye and some of us got a little queasy with the bed we were making. But, whatever. Just like the dude that vacations in Haiti for summer break and finds an attractive local hottie that he can ravage repeatedly w/o thought of using a condom (trojan?), we sometimes must suffer the repercussions of our hasty decisions. Problem is that this one is gonna be a bit more than the penicillin can quickly cure. Oh well, Magic's still alive! Fight On, proudly.
TommyT1973 - "Carroll gave us short term profits, and long term losses."
Just like any "good" CEO, COO, CFO of corporate america
////
Yeah, like 'Kenny Boy' Lay. If the NCAA comes down hard, the program will resemble the rubble left at Enron.
FIGHT ON CARROLL!! ;)
Scoop?? Second-hand Wolf got it from other news sources.
