Corp Dilemma

| | Comments (21) |

From my vantage point, there is a clear dilemma for Aaron Corp. He does not want to transfer from USC. On the other hand, there was absolutely no faith placed in him by the coaching staff, starting with the shoddy treatment the week of the Washington game when he was never named the starter and then the quick demotion to No. 3.
He could stay and hope for the Matt Cassel route (something Mitch Mustain is also hoping for) but he still has a chance to go elsewhere and actually play.
This is less about Pete Carroll's infatuation with Matt Barkley than just wondering if you can get a fair shot to even be the back up (in my opinion).

I'm not a Barkley lover nor am I a Corp hater. I was actually pulling for Corp to win the job early in the year. With that said, I just love how Corp lovers/Barkley haters like Wolf and Petros use the "Corp was never told that he was starting" excuse for the Washington game. Was that the reason why he locked onto receivers all game long? Was that the reason why he got those picks? Was that the reason why he played like crap all day? Wow guys. Please stop using that very weak excuse. Corp played awful vs Washington. That doesn't mean he's an awful QB but by use the same tired and weak excuse? I knew he was starting that week. You knew he was starting that week. We all knew but I guess it's more convenient to use it as an excuse and not Corp's poor play.

Well, Corp should wait to see who the new OC will be, and there is always the chance that being a back-up you get pressed into service if Barkley is hurt. I would hope if that happens, Carroll will prepare whomever is the back-up a bit better than he did for Washington.

"No faith placed in him by the coaching staff"? Seems like the coaches were right on in not placing faith in him.

"Fair shot"? How about the 4 quarters at UW? Doesn't that count?

"Quick demotion to #3"? I would call that a merit based move.

The Corp saga is a joke. Aside from the coaches, most of us thought he would be very good. He wasn't and coaches were correct in their assessment. Time to move on.

I'm really sick of this "poor Corp wasn't told he was starting" shit. Man-up. Corp should transfer if he thinks he can play in the NFL. Otherwise stay put. A SC degree is better than a Deleware State deploma. Mustain can't transfer, no elgibility left to transfer. Corp would only be able to play one year.

There are a lot of things going here. The fact that Corp was like a deer in the headlights at Washington could be attributed to the fact that Jeremy Bates doesn't understand college football. Secondly, I'm not sure it's PC that has the man love but maybe Bates isn't able to relate to Corp and Mustain. I can't believe that it's all about Carroll as it is about his coaches.

I don't think the issue with Corp in the WU game was not being told he would start. The problem was the coaches didn't put in any plays to take advantage of the things he does best. He won the job because he could run and throw. Why didn't we at least use him in an alternate wildcat-type package? That would have kept defenses off balance and given Corp a real roll in the offense.

Corp's poor performance is shared equally with Bates and PC.

Based on his performance in the UW game, does anyone really want to see Corp get playing time? He did not look like he belonged on the field. We had struggles with Barkley, but we really did not have an alternative. If I was in Corp's position, I would definitely transfer as he is probably better suited for a completely different type of offense.
Add me to the list of people that are getting tired of that no vote of confidence garbage.

I appreciate that Aaron Corp came to USC. However, I've always felt that his talents would have been better utilized at Oregon. Had he been a Duck, he could have had an excellent shot at being a 3 year starter for their spread offense.
Despite all the criticism of Barkley, he was probably the best suited to start at QB this past year. I realize that Corp had a near-flawless performance at Spring Camp, but he was way too conservative. Corp rarely threw INTs, but he also rarely threw TD passes. Barkley had the arm strength that forced defenses to respect the deep threat as well as passes in the red zone. Otherwise, opposing teams would have just put 10 guys in the box every time we found ourselves deep in their territory.

Oh, BS, Scotty. Corp didn't know he was starting the UW game? Took snaps with first team all week. Barkley ailing all week and didn't practice. Who the heck did he think was going to start? Did he never hear of "gamesmanship?" Corp stunk up the game. He had his chance and blew it -- played like a high-school quarterback and a bad one at that. I do want to see him compete in Spring practice for the position but he's got to pull himself up by the bootstraps and be a man about it. Compete Corp!

Pete made a huge recruiting mistake dropping Samson for Aaron. Aaron should stay because he will gain much from his degree and contacts he makes at SC but he should forget starting. Matt is our future.

Wrong place, wrong time...the kid really needs to move on....if he indeed does ever get another chance to start, he's so "in his own head" right now, he might very well spontaneously combust in the middle of the field. I had a similar experience as a young actor, (without actually exploding). Barkley's the real deal, Scott...maybe he'll invite you and Petros to the Heisman dinner in a year or two...but, you'd have to get someone to loan you a suit, I'm guessing.

Wolf - I will solve Corps dilemma and make it very easy for you to understand.

1. Stay at USC and focus on getting his education and kiss the very slim chance he will get to start at this level and then get to next level goodbye and get on with his life after football.

2. Transfer to another school, sit out for a year then start over and compete for starting position at the new school with no guarantees of being a starter and even having a good enough year to go the next level, and also plan for life after football.

Pretty simple, decide and get on with it.

gotroy22........"Samson"? I live in Arizona and Samson did nothing for ASU. And he's been injured and has a bum arm. He will not start next year at ASU. He'll be 3rd string.

I heard the OC for Texas this week talking about McCoy and his running ability. He said having a QB who can move the chains 3 or 4 times a game with his feet is a huge advantage. This is what I hoped for with Corp. Not a planned run, but on 3rd and long have a QB who can take off for a first down when all the receivers are covered. This type of QB has killed SC.

if i were corp i'd wait until i saw how this whole bates thing came out and who the QB coach and OC coordinators were ad make my decision based on that hire. it's possible they could get someone in who would invest heavily in him even if it didn't translate into a starting job but maybe a shot at the NFL and more snaps since they won't be as desperate for Barkely to get every possible snap and there's always the injury possibility.

you only get one chance in life to play college football - he should go to a teeny weenie little school if he wants to play

when i was down in s. cal earlier on a surf trip, i got off I-10 because of traffic and accidently drove right by the usc campus - the campus seems nice enough, but the surrounding area is all a very densly packed city - i think uc santa barbara is the place to be and has the finest bikini babes

hey!, is there any truth to the rumor that mitch is trying to get the cowbell added as an instrument to the usc band - so he can play it at half time and get on the field???

Funny how Corp is a washed-up "never was" based on a one game performance where he was told just before kick off that he was starting. Gee....good thing Barkley's one game audition wasn't Stanfurd (1 TD...3 picks...1 lost fumble). Pick 6 also. How would Carson Palmer do in a one game audition back in his sophomore campaign? Way to eat your own. Corp deserves better. I hope for his sake he goes somewhere with a more loyal and reasonable fan base.

111, UC Santa Barbara is a great school but not if you want to play football.....no team, spending too much time in the water I surmise.

EBB, "a more loyal and reasonable fan base" where would you suggest? Fucla?

barkley is way overrated, he reminds me so much of a lest accurate version of ex UGA`s M. Staford.

bates is horrible.

PC is the best coach but really he just doesnt like AC, he could be so useful even if he doesnt start theres a lot of ways to use his skills. ( I am thinking giving him a similar role as Brad Smith for the Jets)

HASS, I disagree with your assessment that Barkley is a less accurate version of Stafford. If you compare his freshman season to Stafford's freshman season, Barkley has a better completion %, a better TD-INT ratio, more yards per attempt, and a higher QB rating. If Barkley progresses over his college career the same way Stafford progressed, we can expect a Heisman caliber performance from Barkley two years from now. Check out the following links and compare Stafford's 2006 stats against Barkley's 2009 stats:
