Del Rio Update

We hear that Jack Del Rio informed USC he will not walk away from the $15 million left on his Jacksonville contract, which could prove fatal to his candidacy.

This is a game of chicken with the owner of Jacksonville.

Cheat Carroll Author Profile Page said:

So does he admit to having the contract now?

sureshot Author Profile Page said:

Who would walk away from that kind of coin? This is just another example of Mike Garrett being a moron. He should have quietly offered JDR and then asked him to negotiate a buyout of his Jaguars contract.

I guess that could still happen though. If Wayne Weaver is as cheap as people say, maybe JDR can get half from the Jags and then more than make up the rest with SC money.

I'd feel a lot more confident if Mike Garrett wasn't running this show. Can we make Pat Haden the interim AD during the search?

USC-Holmey Author Profile Page said:

I think this IS fatal. If his main goal right now is to collect that $15-million, I think he will be unemployed soon, and the USC job will be filled by then.

I think this is bad news.

USC-Holmey Author Profile Page said:

Pat Haden as A.D. is one of the best ideas I have heard in a long time. He has lost more IQ points from aging than Garrett has in his entire immediate family.

sebadoh128 Author Profile Page said:

@ sureshot:

Mike Garrett has little to do with the search. This is the Tom Hammond and Ed Roski show. Don't blame the guy about to get the boot.

Constantine Author Profile Page said:

So Jack Del Rio is such a good coach that we're putting all our eggs in that basket and not interviewing others? This is crazy. There are a number of good college coaches that should be interviewed. I'm not that thrilled with the Del Rio pick anyway, but SC should definately be interviewing others, even if it's just to keep Jacksonville from delaying their firing of Del Rio. If they think they can save $15 million, they may just wait a few weeks. What happens in the meantime? This is ridiculous.

sebadoh128 Author Profile Page said:

Sorry, meant Pat Haden not Tom Hammond, stupid ND announcers.

USC-Holmey Author Profile Page said:

Whew! I thought I was totally lost when you mentioned Tom Hammond! I thought I was completely out of the loop or something! LOL!

Who was it who said, 'timing is everything'? 'It's not what you do, it's how you do it.' 'Never let your enemies (opponents) know what you are thinking.'

If I were JDR I would vehemently deny ever receiving a written contract offer, assuming such offer was sent.

Unless this is just posturing, time to go after the next name on the list (and it better not be Sark or Herm Edwards):

usc-holmey, sadly i read some where edwards turned us down also...so far fisher, rio, stark, rilley edwards all said no...

USC-Holmey Author Profile Page said:

That's actually good news in my eyes, momo. I suppose it should not be a shock that these people may not be willing to make a life-changing career decision in our 36-hour, panicked timeline. Petros' prediction of Chow as head coach is looking more and more logical as each hour passes.

Maybe we can get Kevin O'Neill to coach both basketball and football.

C. J. Spiller thinks Scott's report was bogus.

JAG Author Profile Page said:

Good for JDR to line up a job in case he got fired. From what I've read, this was never that likely to happen.

I don't think JDR is a big loss for USC. Any coach who needs a package of coaches to be complete, is less than ideal. Assistant coaches have a way of leaving programs that are successful.

USC needs to forget about name recognition, and find a very good COLLEGE coach who is a proven recruiter. It's a bit late in the season to pull a premier HC from another major program. The colleges coaches could be pursued systematically in the following order: PAC-10 HC, college HC with USC ties, midmajor HC, Pac-10 assistant coach. etc.

Given that Riley said no, Sark is still a boy, Harbaugh is a dick, and there aren't a lot of current college HC's out there with USC ties, it's time to give serious consideration to some of the top mid-major coaches in the western US. That's how Florida found Meyer and tOSU found Tressel. Names like Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson, Kyle Whittingham, and even Dewayne Walker need to be rapidly and thoroughly vetted. It will take hard work and overtime. Forget about Herm Edwards and Jon Gruden. There's a reason that Norm Chow has never been a HC. If USC can land a good recruiter, at the very least it will be a bridge to the next guy if things don't work out.

BTW, anybody else think USC is treating Scott like a mushroom?

Trojan Conquest Author Profile Page said:

How about Kyle Whittingham from Utah? My first choice would be Petersen, but I don't think he'll leave. Unfortunately Carroll left at a terrible time with the Bush thing looming. Reggie Bush should never be welcomed back and his 5 should be taken down if SC is penalized for this. I still don't understand how SC should know about his scumball parents getting to live in a house in San Diego for free?

Keith15 Author Profile Page said:

Jon Gruden or Brian Billick would be great candidates. I was hoping for Tony Dungy, but he flat out said that he can't relate to his own 17 year old so he couldn't expect to relate to other people's.
Kyle Wittingham or Bronco Mendenhall from BYU could be a nice choice too. But, can they continue the recruiting that is now the standard at the school, especially with constant supervision. Petersen isn't going anywhere. He's too scared for a job like this and doesn't want to move his kids from Boise to Manhattan Beach. I can't help stupid people like that.
USC doesn't want anyone that doesn't have balls. The next guy has to have thick skin and a huge pair, because this is not going to be easy.

gilligan Author Profile Page said:

I say let's proceed with D. Walker b/c their is NO WAY he would give up the opportunity to coach at one of the top programs in the nation and at the same time USC can probably offer him $2M year and use some of the other funds that was used for PC's salary and use it to get some good coaches.
Hopefully if Walker is hired as coach they can retain Ruel, Franklin, Morton, McNair and Seto (assuming Seto has the same role as with PC).

momo Author Profile Page said:

I doubt Peterson would come. Boise State is far away from USC. I don't think Peterson could handle the media attention he would recieve every week.

VB Author Profile Page said:

LOL. Sorry Cheaters. No one wants this sh!tty head coaching job. Everyone knows that the Trojans are heading down to the bottom of the Pac10, and with the NCAA on the verge of revoking you national championship (and yes, I say that in a singular sense because 2003 belonged to LSU), your pathetic football program is about to taste UCLA's a$$ in your faces for years to come.

Neuheisel and the Bruins are going to own L.A. once again. Remember those 8 years? It's gonna be even worse than that for you stupid classless losers.

EAT SH!T AND DIE, DOUCHEBAGS!

ROFL!

Sources close to the university and athletic director Mike Garrett tell me that one candidate USC is taking a big look at is former Kansas coach Mark Mangino. Terms of the deal are unclear, but it is believed a contract has already been drawn up and officials are eager to contact him.

BoscoH Author Profile Page said:

Hey, who is the coach at Richmond? That would be a hilarious hire. And what about John David Booty? JDB is very close to JDR. So close, I keep thinking of JDB every time JDR is written here. Both have the same amount of college coaching experience.

Peter King just reported on SI.com that Del Rio will remain the Jag coach. Does that mean the administration can now move forward and reach out to DeWayne Walker, who would accept and is familiar with the current staff? With every denial or rumored candidate, the position seems to be dumbing down. DeWayne Walker or Norm Chow and let's be done with it.

Pete Carroll's departure from USC to become the Seattle Seahawks' head coach is continuing to make waves in the NFL coaching community.

The latest news involves former Lions and 49ers head coach Steve Mariucci, who may be a candidate to replace Carroll at USC.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that USC has been in contact with Mariucci, and that Mariucci would welcome the opportunity to return to coaching. Although Schefter says USC's contact with Mariucci has been informal so far, the news that Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio plans to stay in Jacksonville could cause Mariucci's contact with USC to heat up.

Mariucci has one year of experience as a college head coach, leading Cal to a 6-6 record in 1996.

Ted Tolner is available and meets all the criteria SC is looking for in a head coach:

-he was a head coach at high profile college program :)
-currently works for an insane boss in the NFL similar and as irrational as Mike Garrett
-runs a pro style offense

sureshot Author Profile Page said:

Petersen would be a great choice. He's from Northern California (like the other big balls Pete) and knows how to beat the teams he's supposed to beat and the teams he's not supposed to beat. His only losses the past couple of years have been to a really good TCU team (2008 Poinsettia Bowl) and to the undefeated Hawaii team (in Honolulu) that went undefeated and to a BCS game.

He knows college football and his wide open offense would be great here. Some have talked about not wanting a spread offense, but his spread is much more similar to a pro style offense. Besides, the spread didn't seem to hurt Florida when they won two of the last four National Championships.

Petersen at USC would be Urban Meyer 2.0

Brian Billick is rumored to be. putting together a coaching staff to take care of Buffalo. These are two coaches that could work for USC:
1. Steve Mariucci was assistant at USC and then later HC at Cal. That means HC'ing experience at both CFB and the NFL. He is also a great OC/QB's coach. He is also charismatic like PC.
2. WHY NOT Tyronne Willingham?

RedondoDawg Author Profile Page said:

Petros' idea of Norm Chow really does make a lot of sense especially in regard to Barkley's progress. I do not think he'll leave UCLA to be an OC. It strikes me that Petersen has a good thing going in Boise - also has a special needs child where consistent environment is key. I think they need to talk to Gary Patterson and how about Randy Edsall from UCONN who did a great job and has built program from D-2A to D-1.

uscmike..........Thanks. Great article. I agree that SC should stay in college. Again, it's too bad Carroll didn't leave after the Reggie Bush thing was done. This might be stopping some from coming. Who's next?
Might be Walker, if he can bring in Chow as the OC and Orgeron as the Assist Head Coach/Recruiting Cordinator. Pay them all $1.5 million and let's get this thing settled so we keep the recruits. One of the worst parts is the recruits who were going to enroll this week.

USC-Holmey Author Profile Page said:

Can anyone post a link to a credible source saying that Mariucci is being considered? His name out of the blue has caught my interest. He is almost a Carroll-clone, especially personality-wise. Plus, his career is at a comparable spot that Carroll's was when we hired him.

USC-Holmey Author Profile Page said:

Yeah, the early entry guys who are not in classes right now (especially Prater) are the toughest part, in my mind. Having a guy taking classes is basically a letter of intent. Not showing up for classes is bad news.

Please ignore VB, I would like to apologize for his rant. He is a Bruin fan, but he does write a lot of crap to stir the pot, even on Gold's blog.
I admit, we Bruin fans are enjoying the meltdown with pete's well timed departure. We will all know in short time the sanctions that will be delivered, and sources have said it will be quite a hammer.
Now all programs admittedly bend the rules, but what has been going on at usc goes beyond Bush. usc has been blatant to the point that the NCAA was forced to prove their credibility. Now many trojan fans will deny the facts or say that every program cheats so it is okay, but the reality is the ridiculous success that usc has enjoyed came with a price and many of you were more willing to turn a blind eye than to face the truth.
