Grading The Program

| | Comments (22) |

Nearly a week into the Kiffin era, here is how things stack up:

Recruiting will be a program strength and USC might add a few surprising commits before signing date. It will probably be a B+.
The defense should be fine although Monte Kiffin will still need to brush up on facing the spread offense in the Pac-10. I'd give it a B.
And then their is the offense. No Norm Chow. And probably no big-name coordinator since they will not call plays. I'd give it an incomplete but looking like a C.

Is Kiffin still trying to hire an established OC or did he decide to serve double duty as HC/OC? Personally, I'd very much prefer to see a new guy in there, not necessarily because I doubt Kiffin's ability in that area, but it's still a norm to have both OC and DC under HC. How can another good offensive mind hurt the program? Besides, what are they going to do with the money they put aside for Norm Chow?

Their's offense, and their's downright offensive. Scott, I don't suppose you'd be decent enough to remove the "A USC graduate" from your bio, would you?

Would you do this to your own brother-in-law?

My favorite part of this story is that Kiffin left Tennessee so hurriedly that he didn't even bother to call his brother-in-law, the brother of his wife, who was also his quarterbacks coach at Tennessee . The New York Times reported David Reaves found out Kiffin was bolting when he saw the news on TV at a local restaurant.

Monty Kiffen and Ed Orgeron get a B on defense? I think I just stopped wasting my time reading you.

Neal, as of now, only Kiff and BC are on staff offensive side. It looks like BC will be retained. McNair, Ruehl and Morton are all likely gone. So, the answer is, yes, there will be several new offensive assistants added. As some are NFL targets, the emphasis is on recruiting until the football season is finished up. Assistant staff will fill out this spring before spring practice.

Trobud, your wife gave me an A+ while you were on the swing shift at McDonalds.

Reggie Miller weighed in on the hiring this morning on a national radio show and said that it was great the USC hired Kiffin...great for UCLA that is. He sounded really excited about it!

Monte and Ed get a B? Did you not see Bryan Steinspring, who VT fans consider to be the worst OC in college football, run circles around them? Bud Foster got an A, Monte and Ed were more like D+ material.

"If there were a stock car race between all the frauds, egomaniacs and two-faced weasels I've ever covered, Lane Kiffin would have the pole position all to himself."

From Gene Wojciechowski, ESPN.com columnist

And from Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com, on USC hiring Kiffin:

"With the NCAA on the doorstep and Troy burning from inside out, it looks like Garrett put out the fire with gasoline."

Loving all the USC haters. You just can't stop thinking about USC. See you in the BCS, losers! Hate on.

are you speaking on behalf of Boise State or TCU? Because I don't see any trOJies in any BCS games for a while still.

Oh, you're so smart, Wolfie. How many D-1 schools have you coached? How many Pop Warner teams have you coached?

Barko Author Profile Page said:

Normally I respect a healthy skepticism... but c'mon, shouldn't Kiffin get a little more respect than a C? He was the OC during the only season in NCAA history with a QB with 3000+ yards, two 1000 yard receivers, and two 1000 yard backs. Shouldn't he at least be above average?

@ Wolf - What is your grade for UCLA offense in 2010 now that they have the guru Chow back. Come on man, show some balls and make your prediction now for UCLA with Chow in 2010.

@ ESPN and CBS Sports Writers - I love it! They all hate SC and they all hate Kiffin, but rather than sitting back and waiting, they need to keep re-assuring themselves everyday in the press there will be a bad meltdown. Their insecurities and constant need for self assurance are fascinating!
