Peterson Contacted

USC's contacted Boise State coach Chris Peterson regarding its coaching vacancy in the wake of Jack Del Rio's withdrawal from the race. Peterson would be a big-name hire but luring him to the big city could be an issue.

Petersen! With an E! PetersEn!

Please, Mr. Wolf, please start spelling his name correctly.

JAG Author Profile Page said:

If Petersen comes, Scott could call him Ceasor.

Thank God, I am telling you this is a great candidate and the best out there that "might" be willing to come out to So CAL.

C'mon at least put in the effort to spell his name correctly!

Petersen is the best hire out there.

SC Giant Author Profile Page said:

I doubt Petersen leaves the tranquility of Boise for the pressure cooker of LA. But SC needed to contact him nonetheless. I'd be shocked if this leads to any real discussions.

Second-hand Wolf can't seem to get people to speak with him nor get his facts right. Nice work Wulf.

VB Author Profile Page said:

USC hiring Petersen would be huge for UCLA. Having a gooberish, overrated little twit across down will certainly give the Bruins the upper hand.

CHEAT ON! SUC ON!

Drone on, for USC
You skanky whores, get off your knees,
You steamy sacks of sh!t,
You've got no brains,
You've got no wit,
Drone on SC, Drone on for USC
DRONE ON!!!

Second-hand Wulf and lousy facts TAKE TWO -- Del Rio never withdrew from the race because he was never in the race. His name was speculated as a candidate, but he never even acknowledged the contact. Nice work Wulf.

Hey VB,

You're right LA already has a "gooberish, overrated little twit". His name is Ricky Neuheisel and he is a loser like you. He wrote the book on cheating and he "suc's" better than anyone I know after your mother. We could hire John Wooden's corpse to be the head coach and still beat that sorry, pathetic, high school team known as Westwood High. Now please finish mowing the lawn and emptying the trash and get off of your boss' computer.

TrueSCfan Author Profile Page said:

VB,

For a little squid from West Wood u have a lot of time on you hands to see what the great minds at USC are thinking. Dont you fags from Westwood have something better to do than to worry about us. Oh, and Petersen is the same guy who BEAT Oklahoma. UCLA can't beat freakin Mississippi St. right now, the same school who struggled with freakin Temple. I mean come on, stick to basketball and sit down some where. As of right now, you can't even play basketball right now. FIGHT ON!!!!!

Petersen may not be the best hire out there. Kyle Whittingham, especially if you can get his former DC (Gary Anderson, now Utah St. HC) in the deal, is a better candidate.....

If you guys are seriously excited about hiring a coach who has beaten a disappointed Oklahoma, an overrated TCU, and a bunch of other high school teams year in and year out, then go right on ahead. Petersen isn't even good enough to suck the farts out of Neuheisel's office chair.

DRONE ON!

@SC Giant - I wonder what an extra $2 million per year over the $900K he already makes would do to the pressure cooker situation of LA?? I'm not certain, but I'm just saying...

@VB - If Coach Petersen and Boise State played UCLA 10 times, Boise State would be 10 and 0, you know it and I know it. I also know the thought of him at SC scares the hell out of you and that the monopoly would continue another 10 years!!! Yikes!!!

If SC is going to hire a college guy that would leave their current gig and not give the feelers and speculators the high hat, I am curious why the administration and If You Build It They Will Come Ed the Billionaire are not advocating a coach without any baggage. Norm Chow seems to be every Trojan alums offensive hard on and DeWayne Walker is a solid candidate in terms of knowledge of the recruiting landscape in Southern California, which is really a different animal than all the NFLers that are being mentioned and felt up. Can we stop with the foreplay already? Hire Norm or Sark back, or go give D Walker his dream gig and let's shore up this recruiting class and start prepping for spring ball.

Dear Lord,

I emplore thee. Grant unto SUC one Chris Petersen, that he may lead the Prophylactics down to the depths to which they rightly and justly deserve.

Amen!

VB is right, if you losers at figueroa Tech get Petersen, it would be great for UCLA. But I doubt Petersen comes to SUC. Why leave the comfort of Boise and the ease of playing Little Sisters of the Poor year-in and year-out, to come to the P10 and get his azz kicked.

Gee, did you ever think about Petros Papa-dick-us?

I think Petersen could be a good hire.

One thought, the previous two BSU coaches, Dan Hawkins and Dirk Koetter, were not sucessful when they stepped up to the next level.

Sure there is a big differnce between USC and Colorado and ASU, I am just saying that this hire would have some risk.

sureshot Author Profile Page said:

Petersen at USC would be Urban Meyer 2.0

Plus, he's from Northern California and has only been at Boise State for a few years (different situation than OSU Alumnus, Mike Riley)

Petersen beats the teams he's supposed to beat and beats the teams he's not supposed to beat. He would be the best choice we could possibly hope for. And if he were to bring in Norm Chow and/or Ed Orgeron, that would be the icing on the cake.

I think it's laughable how petrified Fucla fans are of SC hiring Chris Petersen. He's the only candidate I've seen any real reaction to. I'd say that's a good sign that Ruin fans do not want to see Chris Petersen roaming the sidelines in the Land of Troy.

how does it feel to be spurned by the fifth coach? Just remember, Jim Zorn is still your most likely candidate

Petersen is not leaving a great situation in Boise, for the potential cesspool of sanctions coming our way at USC.

You have to believe that most coaches are in the know about what the NCAA is going to charge against the university.

Scott, if PeterSEN (sic) turns the job down, and Garrett doesn't stop this japanese fire drill by finally offering Norm Chow the job, we should all start demanding a new AD. Why does Garrett do these same things every time he goes looking for a new coach looking totally stupid without a clue? I'm fearful because Daryle Gross isn't here anymore to bail Mr. Hardhead out. Garrett left alone too long will destroy SC's football program. Mariucci my a**!

UB (Ultimate Bruin) Author Profile Page said:

@ dtksr1:

Get a clue, Norm won't take the job. Neither will Peterson. JDR is already out. So is Riley. Mariucci? Forget it! SUC will have to settle for some relative unknown. #1 No one wants to try and fill Cheatey Petey's shoes. #2 The talent returning to SUC is less than stellar when compared to earlier SUC teams in the Cheatey Petey era. #3 The NCAA hammer is about to come down. So, get used to getting some 2nd tier no-name to lead the TrOJans into oblivion.

i would be soooo happy if sc made chow there hc.. i mean he has gotten turned down for every head coaching job he has ever applied for including san jose state. he would be a different mold of charlie weiss, so if you want him you can have him. it will just bring UCLA to the top even faster. but its inevitable

The timing is killer for the Trojan program, just three weeks away from initial signing day. and the recruiting impact is already being felt, as is evidenced in this article by Brandon Huffman of FoxSports.com:

"Set to enroll at USC on Monday, Kyle Prater (#2 rated receiver) went home to Illinois after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl instead of flying out to Los Angeles as originally planned.

Now, Prater isn't sure what he's going to do.

'He messed up a lot of recruiting,' Prater said about Carroll. 'There are a lot of kids down here who feel just like I do. I mean, Carroll told me he was going to be there and now he's not. I don't know what to think right now. I don't even want to talk about it anymore.'

Instead of being in Los Angeles, ready to begin life as a college student, Prater now finds his phone constantly ringing, with coaches trying to gauge where they could potentially stand.

Dillon Baxter, California's single-season record holder for touchdowns, committed to USC before he'd even started his junior year in high school. Carroll is almost entirely the reason Baxter committed to the Trojans.

Like Prater, Baxter thought he'd be walking the campus in Los Angeles wearing a backpack this week.

Also like Prater, Baxter went home, in his case to San Diego, instead of USC, to get his thoughts and plans together before deciding what he'd be doing.

This weekend was setting up to be USC's biggest recruiting weekend of the season. The plan was for 11 recruits to be there, including two commits, and a handful of out-of-state recruits.

With Carroll likely in the Emerald City by the end of the week, that recruiting weekend looks like it won't happen.

Meanwhile, across town at UCLA and in of all places, Seattle, where the University of Washington resides, their big recruiting weekends were coming up. Now each school could see their visitor lists expand.

UCLA already benefitted from that on Friday. When news broke that Carroll was taking the Seahawks job, Dietrich Riley, a long-coveted safety by both the Bruins and the Trojans, hastily scheduled a visit to Westwood, taking his official visit to UCLA. Riley was set to visit USC this upcoming weekend, but now that is up in the air and he's said he may take an unofficial to UCLA again."

It should be a very interesting three weeks before Feb 3 and the initial signing day....

Thank's for the insight Welf.
PetersEn should have been SC's first choice. I doubt he'll come. Boise just has to win 2 tough games every year.
Seriously, this is embarrassing that Welf continues to misspell his name.
If not Petersen, then get Kyle Whittingham.

Imagine the pain the boy feels every time he sees his daddy suit up in his powder blue knowing his failure made a little piece of his father's heart die.

So maybe everyone should cut VB a little slack. His ranting is just a desperate cry for his father's attention and ultimately, his love. As much as the old man will deny it, that love and pride will never be there for his son.

I admit, we Bruin fans are enjoying the meltdown with pete's well timed departure. We'll all know, in short time, the sanctions that will be delivered, and sources have said it will be quite a hammer.

Now all programs admittedly bend the rules, but what has been going on at usc goes beyond Bush. usc has been blatant to the point that the NCAA was forced to prove their credibility.

Now many trojan fans will deny the facts or say that every program cheats so it is okay, but the reality is the ridiculous success that usc has enjoyed came with a price and many of you were more willing to turn a blind eye than to face the truth.

As for Chris Petersen, he would be a great hire for any program looking for new leadership. During UCLA's coaching search he was presumably towards the top of our list, but his wife doesn't like L.A. and he's a small town guy. Having a special needs child is also a huge factor. Petersen would no doubt be able to coach in the PAC-10, but it's probably not going to happen.

PH55 Author Profile Page said:

Sureshot - Riley is an Alabama alum. He grew up in Corvallis when his dad was an OSU ass't.

Petersen should be the guy. He is the best coach in the country. And he's done what USC hasn't very often lately; beat the Oregon schools.
Recruits will see his offense and want to be a part of it. His DC is the up and coming Justin Wilcox who would be a great addition if he didn't replace Petersen at BSU.

No point to having Chow with Petersen though. Both offensive guys.

During the Dan Hawkins days at BSU it was known by program insiders that Petersen was the true brains behind the operation and thus a seamless transition when he took over the reins.

Encinitas Bruin and all the other UCLA SUCKS wannabes: the USC recruiting visit weekend is happening so slow your roll. OC Register just reported Mariucci had not been contacted by the university per Mariucci's old boss: Gene Murphy at Fullerton College. There is a God! Getting Peter-everybody misspells me-sen would be a score for the administration, but he has a special needs kid and I doubt the lure of LA would get him to part ways with the blue turf. I still am going to bat for DeWayne Walker, Sark, and Norm Chow - knowing full well based on his attempts at Jesse Scroggins today that Kiffin is staying put as a Vol.

Ås I enter 38 comments in, I think it's hilarious that the only person who doesn't spell the Boise coach's name correctly is the blogger. But then, I look at his subject-verb disagreements and wonder how he got a college degree and job at a metropolitan daily.

JAG Author Profile Page said:

Mike Garrett consider this:

Dewayne Walker is:
1. a very good college-level defensive coach, and
2. a proven successful recruiter in the Southern California area, and
3. there's a good chance he'd jump at the opportunity to coach USC.

As far as I can tell, this gives him at least 2 steps up on most of the candidates on your list. He may or may not be a home run, but he won't be a foul ball either. Name recogition doesn't win football games. You already like the guy. Hire him! Give him a chance to grow into the job...like Carroll did. This is the perfect time for it.

sureshot Author Profile Page said:

JAG, Dewayne Walker wouldn't be a bad hire. Especially if he brought Norm Chow and Coach O back here. Certainly we'd have the best offensive coordinator, one of the best defensive coordinators, and by far the best recruiters in the country. I only worry about his experience as a head coach. A single year is pretty flimsy experience to become head coach at a program like USC. I think Petersen would be the best hire possible. But barring that, if Walker could guarantee bringing Chow and Orgeron on board, I would have no problem with that hire.

JAG Author Profile Page said:

Sureshot,

I agree 100%. Ultimately I like a coach who can hire the right coordinators himself. That said, I'd feel a hell of a lot better if Chow and O came with Walker.

Petersen is an outstanding game coach. But, I can't honestly say I'd give him any better marks than Walker when it coes to coaching one-side of the ball and recruiting. Game coach? Yes.

Encinitas Bruin Author Profile Page said:

For Norm's sake, it would be great for his long-time HC dream to come true. However, I don't think it's a fit for SC. He's too quiet, a background kind of tactician - not the rah-rah type like Carroll or Neuheisel. And while Walker is a class act (and did get the Bruins that 13-9 win over the Trojans in '06), the hard reality is that his defenses at UCLA, while strong, were never typically ranked higher than #20 in D1.

Norm stays at UCLA at least another year. Walker stays at NM.

Sark is your man.
