Here's USC's announcement on who will replace Rory Markas for the rest of the basketball season.

PHYSIOC, ARBOGAST TO FILL IN AS USC BASKETBALL ANNOUNCER

LOS ANGELES--Steve Physioc and Pete Arbogast will fill in as the USC men's basketball radio play-by-play announcer for the remainder of the 2010 season following yesterday's (Jan. 4) death of Rory Markas, who served in that role for the past 12 seasons.

Physioc, who worked with Markas through 2009 on the Angels' television and radio broadcasts, will announce USC's 7 p.m. game at Stanford on Wednesday (Jan. 6). Because of a conflict with the Lakers' game, that Trojan-Cardinal contest will air on KLAA 830 and KGIL 1260 instead of USC flagship 710 ESPN Radio (KSPN-AM).

Arbogast, who is USC's football radio play-by-play announcer, then will handle the final 15 games of the 2010 season, beginning with Saturday's (Jan. 9) broadcast at California at 7:30 p.m. That game will air on 710 ESPN.

USC will decide on a permanent replacement for Markas after the season.

Jim Hefner will continue in his role as the Trojans' longtime radio analyst.

I guess nobody will be needed to handle the tournies. Thoughts and prayers to Markas' family and friends.

I know high school kids that can call a game better than Arbogast....

Pete Arbogast was always trying to get the job away from Rory in years past. A terrible tragedy to a real wonderful man. Rory came to one of my dinners a couple of years ago straight from the airport even though his airplane was delayed in arriving. Could talk to him about all USC sports. He will be sorely missed by me especially.

Oh man. During the Stanford game, Jim Hafner referred to Steve Physioc as "Rory" a few times. Steve replied: "It's okay, you were by his side for [many] years." It is so hard to say goodbye, especially a sudden death like Rory's. R.I.P. Mr. Markas.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
