Time To Worry?
With Mike Riley staying at Oregon State, USC now needs to scramble a bit to find a coach. Jack Del Rio and Herm Edwards are on the list but someone needs to push Jim Harbaugh, Gary Patterson and Chris Peterson.

While I understand some folks' concern about Jack Del Rio lacking head coaching experience at college level. But I do like to see this guy as our next main man. He has had a rather long career as a player, so I'm sure he's a players' coach, which might click very well in college game. If we could somehow harness his high-energy with much experience as in Norm Chow, we'll be more than OK. The question, though, is Chow still not dyed in that "baby" power blue yet? LOL!!!
Harbaugh isn't going anywhere...in fact, i doubt any pac-10 coaches will for that matter. as Rome (USC) burns, this is the perfect opportunity for the PAC-10 schools to start pulling top recruits away from USC, and start balancing the tides once again the PAC-10. this will be one interesting year. can't wait!
FIGHT ON!

POSTED BY BROOKS on Jan. 10, 2010, 11:49PM
Scott Wolf of the L.A. DAILY NEWS, who Friday was the first to report that Pete Carroll had accepted the head coaching job with the Seahawks, is first with the news Sunday that Carroll has resigned his position as USC coach. USCFootball.com follows up by reporting that Carroll handed in his resignation tonight.
TWO USC ADMINISTRATION SOURCES TOLD ME TODAY THAT CARROLL ACUTALLY RESIGNED LAST NIGHT OVER CONCERNS THAT A DELAY IN FINALIZING HIS NEW JOB IN SEATTLE WAS WRECKING USC's RECRUITING CLASS (Which it was).
So now what is USC looking at? Don’t ask.
The school’s top choice, Mike Riley, will almost certainly pass on the USC job. Oregon State also is now prepared to offer Riley a lifetime contract with the school.
L.A. and national college football media consensus has Jack Del Rio, who is once again on the ropes in Jacksonville, taking over for Carroll at USC - but only if he allows USC boosters to hire his key assistants. Names kicked around for Del Rio’s staff are Ed Orgeron, Norm Chow and Kennedy Pola. All three were on Carroll’s staff for USC’s championship run.
You might think that USC will have a war on its hands in trying to pry Chow away from UCLA, but remember that as a private school, USC is uninhibited in what it can pay Chow. State school UCLA doesn’t have that luxury.
As an aside, I’ve been told that when news broke out that Mike Riley was under consideration for the USC, UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel called Oregon State commits to try to get them to drop the Beavers for the Bruins.
As for Del Rio’s USC staff, most likely to be first in line is Orgeron, a recruiting ace who Del Rio once interviewed and tried to hire in Jacksonville.
One other tidbit for recruiting junkies: Del Rio played with Jim Jeffcoat with the Cowboys, whose son Jackson is a top prospect in Texas. USC has been on Jackon’s trail for some time now, and bringing in Del Rio would almost certainly ensure Jackson signing with the Trojans.
So why aren’t Chris Peterson, Jim Harbaugh and Kyle Whittingham gaining consideration for the job? Power brokers at the school know that hot coaching prospects aren’t going to want to deal with NCAA sanctions which are likely to hit the program in the spring. USC admins and boosters also know that Del Rio is desperate to take the job and will agree to give up a lot of control over the program, something Peterson, Harbaugh and Whittingham would be much less likely to consider.
Not to mention trying to followup Carroll’s extraordinary success.
Notice I haven’t mentioned USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett once in this post? Garrett is a figurehead who has little knowledge of the best prospective coaches. And even less inclination to do the homework that it takes to find out. I’ve been told that one of his suggestions for the job was actually Herm Edwards, which says it all.
When USC School President Steven Sample retires in August, I’m told the 65-year-old Garrett will be escorted to his car in the parking lot on the same day - with the school claiming that he “retired.” (Okay, the parking lot thing was an exaggeration, but he will indeed leave the school when Sample retires.)
As for DeWayne Walker, I was told Sunday that he hasn’t yet been contacted by Carroll about taking over the defense in Seattle, but that could change at any moment. It is also known that Walker, who is currently head coach at New Mexico State, won’t return to USC unless he’s made head coach, which is unlikely. I still think he’ll end up in Seattle as DC.
Here’s the kicker, I was actually told a couple weeks ago that Carroll was considering resigning back then, which I’m guessing was before he had any inkling about the Seattle job. (Who knows though, this could’ve been in the works for months.)
If that isn’t an indication of how much Carroll despised Garrett and possibly feared future NCAA sanctions, I don’t know what is.

BROOKS/Brog:
Please check the following link:
http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/article/2010-01-05/jaguars-appear-be-sticking-del-rio
Please look about midway in the article where there's a salary reference. Assuming you are correct how do you refute the wages argument/factor? If(still a big IF) money is not a problem will Mike Garrett be able to sell that to the boosters or to the administration? If NOT is Del Rio willing to work for a much lower income?
I have posted a few times that Del Rio being quoted selling his soul out to coach USC. I read that about three years ago. If JDR becomes USC HC is former Trojans DB Mark Carrier going to be a coaching staff member?
Thanks
Del Rio, Chow, Orgeron ... Make it happen!
It sounds more and more that Garrett was one of the main reasons for PC's departure. I wonder if Garrett's treatment of Floyd irked PC considering that he had a good relationship with Floyd.
From my understanding, if JDR is hired he will probably bring in Koetter as his OC (not a bad choice) and probably Pola. It would be great if he was able to bring in Orgeron as his DC and Carrier as a secondary coach would also be a good choice. If Carrier can coach the secondary to half of his skills we will probably have the best secondary in the nation b/c Carrier was the best USC safety after Lott.
Does anybody know when the new USC coach will be named b/c from my understanding PC finalized the Seattle deal but they probably won't announce it until later this week? Thanks.
Dream Weaver..... these coaches are not coming.
Its going to be a flier coach looking for a big step up.
No one wants to touch the USC hot potato.
Peterson and Patterson are in much better situations where they are. USC is nothing but a gamble for them with the known/unknown NCAA action pending.
Ohhhh.... Dream Weaver.
It's Petersen, not Peterson.
I agree with Tommy T. I bet Jon Gruden is probably chomping at the bit right now and hoping his phone rings. Not sure if he is the right fit at USC but he has taken two teams in the NFL and turned them around.
Too much of a cloud hanging over Mike Leach right now for him to be considered. Whether its Del Rio or whoever is interested just get them in soon to stop the bleeding. SC will still get it's share of recruits that want to play at and in So Cal.
Let the dust settle and then maybe we can get a top notch college coach.
Gruden is an interesting candidates but 1) he's a big-time Domer (wonder if he'd work for Domerville's nemesis, and 2) he just signed extension with espn. Maybe that's not a big deal but it's money.
Petersen is the dream candidate (Urban Meyer 2.0 at SC)
But if the sanctions thing is a reality, JDR teamed with Norm Chow and Ed Orgeron would be a really solid backup plan.
Petersen! With an E, not an O!
Who gets Spaulding?
When I moved to SoCal from PA in 2000, I attended my first USC game at the half-empty, dead Coliseum vs Arizona and sat with people who had shirts on that said "Fire Hackett" on the front and "Take Garrett With You" on the back. It was a great time to become a season-ticket holder. Ten years later, the place is sold out, the record is 97-19, 7 Pac-10 titles, 2 National championships and we've gotten to watch some of the greatest players in USC history.
And, for this, Pete Carroll gets insulted and ridiculed. If memory serves, USC Legends John McKay and John Robinson left for the NFL too.
Hopefully, none of the hoped for candidates for the job, especially Petersen and Patterson, have read the comments on this and other blogs and see what a bunch of ignorant ingrates are so-called "Trojans for Life."
THANKS PETE AND GOOD LUCK!!!!
Exactly, RedondoDawg!! Plaschke made the same points in his column last Friday. It has been a great decade for SC football, and it's human nature to get spoiled.
Pete will go down as a legendary college football coach and I almost feel indebted to his as he has restored our program to glory. Although I really hate to see him go, I wish him the best. I am just a little frustrated because I truly believe he is meant to stay at SC; but his return to the NFL seemed inevitable based on what happened in previous years (Dolphins/Falcons).
Now, we need to get a great new coach and staff in here asap. I think the staff is a key. I think we would all love to see Coach O come back to SC in some capactity. I think he would have the best chance of saving our recruiting class. The idea of Peterson or Whittingham coming is also very compelling. Maybe it is time for a change of pace at SC.
Just be sure that Jeremy Bates is gone. Is Chow a possibility. With him and Ogeron I could be the coach!
Thanks RedondoDawg!
If anybody has time and the web skills, can somebody start a website called: ThankYouPeteCarroll.com, so we can tell him how much we appreciate him and how much he has meant to the USC family.
It's too bad to assholes like Wolf can't seem to appreciate what he has given to this university, its students and alumnis. Nobody is prefect...
I predict that NO MORE PAC-10 TEAMS will go back to the national championship game unless we get away from the Round-Robin format. It's not a surprise that Pete didn't get to play for the NCs after the switch to this format.
Pete: we love you!
I would love to see Petersen. Can you imagine SC running that Boise State offense?? JDR is much more likely however.
"Del Rio, Chow, Orgeron ... Make it happen!"
I think this is where I sit now too. That trio is as good as we can get at this ppint, IMO.
I can't even fathom the idea of Del Rio or Riley being head coaches at this program, Del Rio had a good career as a player, however, his coaching record leaves much to be desired, Riley on the other hand, has had a few victories against SC and not much else.
So why the infatuation with these guys, it appears that we in this Hollywood (Celebrity Market) seem to look at glitter rather than substance.
Pro Coaches are not as hands on as collegiate Coaches, they rely on their assistants and position coaches to get the job done, which in some ways is a disconnect from what is really going on with the players, yes, they have coaches meetings but if they are not watching the progress of a player or group of players it is only then by hearsay!
Another item that seems to be lost by most of the blog members here and elsewhere, is the "diamonds in the rough", so to speak, Petersen, Patterson, Willingham Mendenhall when randomly matched against any of the PAC10 teams always seem to win. One can excuse these wins by stating that the PAC10 teams didn't have anything on the line or their players thought is was a 'nothing game' they get beat none the less.
Most of the coaches above have built their program with nickles and dimes, not the kind of money that is available in the PAC10, that in itself is laudable. Furthermore; they have gained national attention with players, for the most part have no stars by their names, they take these kids and coach them up to be impact players, that has to speak volumes for the coaches dedication and talent, why then do we overlook such talent for the sake of a failed record in the instance of Del Rio or a Riley who hasn't matched the record of Telford?
Now is really the time FIGHT ON, not only on the field, but with insightful and prudent choices by the administration.
Well Pete is gone so what is the next step? Numero Uno everyone needs to stop speculating about the upcoming NCAA sanctions. I was at SC when were hit for recruiting violations under John Robinson, the NCAA had valid information and documentation during that event. To date the NCAA has nothing, and the depositions for Pete and Reggie are not in the near future. The NCAA at this point has no information in which to slap USC with any sanctions. So right now its all speculation.
Regarding Pete Carrol's departure he left because he had no coordinators left in the cupboard to hide his inablity to coach. Pete could recruit and was a great p/r guy but beyond that he could not coach. the true coaches were Ogeron,Chow,Smith,Holt etc. Let's bid Pete Adieu and and Thanks and move on.
Garrett for heavens sake stay away from Herm he is a horrible coach. Whom do I like hell I'd take Leach in a minute. but way to much baggage. The best available choices are Jack Del Rio or Utah's Wittingham. If they go to Jack, more than likely we will get Koetter,Pola,Carrier and Orgeron. This is the direction the program needs to go. What do we need to do let Mike Garrett know we in now way want Herm from Kansas City, he is awful. Now is the time to Fight On, and hope that Mike Garrett can make the right decision for the program.
T4, I agree completely about these "mid-major" coaches doing more with less.
I am especially on the Chris Petersen bandwagon and have stated numerous times that he would be Urban Meyer 2.0 at USC. I like his attitude, I like his youth, and I like his offensive innovation. It also helps that he's a Northern California kid (went to Sac City & UC Davis - a mere 50 miles from Pete Carroll's Alma Mater, University of the Pacific). I grew up in Stockton and know how highly regarded USC is in Northern California, especially in the Valley. I'd be willing to bet USC is the school Chris Petersen looked up to most as a youth/teenager. Unless there are major sanctions, I think he'd jump at the chance to come to USC. I mean, he's gone undefeated at Boise St twice (three times in the regular season) and his best final ranking was #5 in the country. At USC, he'd be assured of winning the National Championship with that kind of record. As good as his returning team may be, BSU will never be in the same stratosphere as USC when it comes to a national level.
USC offers what only 2 or 3 other programs in the country can offer as far as history and a chance to win titles.
FIGHT ON!
Trojans getting desperate, hmmm?
desperation to fear, leads.
fear, to anger leads.
anger, to the Dark Side leads.
the new coach will be a JUCO, i sense.
herh herh herh.
Who would have thought that our GLORIOUS Emerald Bowl CHAMPIONSHIP would be our last for some time? I was really looking forward to the Poinsettia Bowl next year.
USC Alum '02
I can't believe Yoda cares about USC's next coach. I thought he had more important stuff to worry about.
Yoda,
I think with your limited wisdom and perception you see an illusion, there is not desperation...but joy, joy in the manner of having the whole world as a plum, ripe to be picked. You see, USC is not UCLA, we do not have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for a coach, but will pick the coach that we WANT! a WINNER!
The Dark Side my friend, is only in your Mind!
Right on Scotty... right on!
Only, I fear Mike Garrett isn't smart enough to add those names on his list. Please someone clue him in and quick before we have a panic run of new recruits leaving this program altogether!
